The Contenders (2) - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
As one of the gamblers approaches Jim’s hiding spot beneath the ring, Rollin thinks quickly and shaves the die that he’s holding using a spare coin. He then accuses someone of cheating, and the man going for the die beneath the ring steps back. Wesley asks to see the other die and the man gets it, unaware that Jim has moved away. The henchman confirms that the second dice isn’t marked and that both dice were clean when he came in. Rollin storms off, saying he won’t play in a crooked game, and the others leave with him. Once everyone leaves, Jim slips back out through the window.

The next day, Buckman brings Cinnamon with him as he goes to the gym to watch Barney spar with Stevens. Whalen is there with Wesley, and Ernie is less than happy to see his girlfriend on his boss’ arm. Rollin figures that Stevens will try to take Barney fast. The two fighters go at it with Barney staying primarily on defense. When the first round ends, Barney warns Rollin that Stevens almost had him. Meanwhile, Willy triggers the gas valve fastened to Stevens’ spit bowl, giving him a dose of gas. Barney rallies against the groggy Stevens, and the round bell rings. Stevens gets another dose of gas and drops when Barney hits him again. Buckman and Whalen, impressed, figure that Barney is the boxer they need.

As Barney leaves the ring, Buckman promises to talk to Rollin. Ernie, who has seen the fight, dismisses Barney as a fighter and coldcocks him, knocking him out with one punch. Rollin and Willy wake their teammate up, and Barney goes after Ernie. Buckman tells them to save it for the ring, while Willy hits the retraction device that pulls all four gas valves back into the camouflaged box.

Buckman drops Cinnamon off at her apartment and she makes sure that he’s welcome to see her that night.

Jim is working at the bookie joint for Whalen. Once he’s alone, he starts writing down the names of all of Whalen’s bookies.

At his office, Buckman calls in Rollin and tells him that he wants to put Barney under contract. However, he wants 75% to cover Barney’s expenses. When Rollin threatens to walk, Buckman tells him that if they don’t agree then Barney won’t get any fights. Rollin figures that Buckman wants Barney to take the occasional dive and insists that he won’t sell out his boxer, and then storms out. Wesley wonders what they’re going to do and Buckman figures that they can convince Rollin, one way or another, to convince Barney to go along with him.

Jim meets with Richy and assures him that they’ll soon have the addresses of every bookie that Whalen uses. They’re at the apartment across the street from Rollin’s. When they spot Wesley outside, Jim calls Rollin to warn him. He and Barney then stage a conversation over whether to work for Buckman. Once Barney and Willy leave, Wesley emerges from hiding and goes into Rollin’s room. He draws a gun on him and tells him to sign the contract. When Rollin refuses, Wesley twists his arm and shoves his head down onto the stove and turns on the gas. Rollin finally gives in and signs, and Wesley tells him that Barney has a fight the next night and it’s rigged so that he’ll win in the sixth.

The next night, Whalen and Buckman watch as Barney takes down his opponent, Leonard. Whalen’s man Stan assures him that they closed with Leonard at six-to-one. Barney continues to move up through the elimination rounds, winning each one. However, when it comes time to fight Ernie, Buckman calls in Barney and Rollin and informs them that they’ll lose against Ernie in the third round or they’ll have Barney killed.

At the apartment, Jim briefs IMF agent Rena on how much to bet at each of Whalen’s bookie joints. She then gives Jim a comb with some hairs in it and leaves. Cinnamon confirms that she’s meeting with Buckman in a half hour and Jim tells her to stay with him the entire day. He heads back to work while Rollin prepares Barney’s disguise.

At the gambling parlor, Whalen goes over the bets that are coming in on Barney. However, Stan tells him that all the bets at the bookie joints are being made by the same woman with dark hair, wearing sunglasses. Jim comes in to tell them that the same woman, Rena, is there placing a $25,000 bet. Whalen agrees to take the bet, but Stan and Jim figure she’s placing it for someone who knows that Barney is going to win. Jim suggests that he follow the woman and find out who she’s betting for, and Whalen agrees.

That night, Jim and Richy enter the arena and watch as Ernie and Barney enter the ring. Cinnamon arrives with Buckman, and Whalen tells him about the woman betting $100,000 on Barney. Buckman figures she’s betting for the Las Vegas bookies and dismisses Whalen’s concerns. The fight begins and they make it through the first round. Ernie tells his coach that Barney is working too hard to make it look good. When they clinch in the next round, Ernie asks Barney what he’s trying to do, and Barney says he’s just making it look good.

In the third round, Barney goes for the win. Whalen asks Buckman what happened, and Buckman insists that it’s a double-cross. He tells Buckman to make sure that Barney loses. Meanwhile, Jim tells Richy to get down to the dressing room before the end of the round. He goes into Barney’s dressing room and puts on Barney’s boxing outfit.

Barney finally knocks Ernie down, but it’s not a knockout. Buckman tells Wesley to help Ernie, and the henchman removes a needle from his tie. Meanwhile, Buckman goes down and tells Barney to go down and stay down. Rollin assures him that he has nothing to worry about. Wesley goes over and gives the needle to Ernie, who slips it into his glove. When the boxers go at it again, Ernie lashes out and scratches Barney’s glove open, and Barney realizes what’s going on. When they clinch, Ernie slashes the needle across Barney’s forehead.

While Buckman is down at the ring, Jim goes to Whalen and tells him that he followed Rena and confirms that she went to Buckman’s apartment. Despite his injury, Barney takes out Ernie, winning the match. Whalen tells Jim to go to Buckman’s office at the arena and waiting for them. He then has his man Vince bring Buckman to the office. As Buckman and Wesley prepare to dispose of Barney and Rollin, Vince draws a gun and tells Buckman that Whalen wants to see him now

Barney and the others go to his dressing room. Once they’re alone, Richy takes Barney’s place. Meanwhile, Whalen insists on accompanying Cinnamon up to Buckman’s office.

Once he’s in his office, Buckman demands to know what’s going on. Cinnamon hugs Buckman and secretly slips an envelope with the receipts into his jacket. Jim identifies Cinnamon as the woman who placed the bets, and finds the sunglasses and the comb with the brunette hairs in her purse. Buckman has no idea what’s going on, and Whalen tells him that Cinnamon was betting the $100,000 for Buckman. They find the receipts on Buckman and Jim offers to get Cinnamon out. Once they leave, Buckman insists that he’s being set up. When Wesley goes for a gun, Vince kills him and then disposes of Buckman as well.

Rollin lets the reporters into Rich’s dressing room, and he announces that he’s retiring from boxing. Meanwhile, Barney, Rollin, and Willy slip quietly away and leave with Jim and Cinnamon.
