Jim picks up his briefing at a parking lot from a locked car. Raymond Barret, completing his five-year sentence in prison, set up an armored car robbery then hid the ten million dollars. He then got himself arrested on a fake charge under a new ID and waited out the statute of limitations in prison. Once it expires, he plans to collect the money upon his release. The statute expires in two days so the IMF have that long to get him out of prison and trick him into leading them to the money.
Jim assembles the usual team plus two additional members: Dr. Jacob Bowman, who works at Barret’s prison, and prisoner Max Davis. The IMF has made arrangements to get Davis a reduced sentence in return for his help. After examining a refrigeration device, they check the files on Singleton and Gilbert, the two men who Barret double-crossed when he hid the money from them.
At the prison, Dr. Bowman checks out Barret and Jim comes in as a scientist using prisoners for test subjects. Jim mentions that another prisoner decided not to through with a cryogenic experiment that involves freezing ailing patients until they can be revived when there’s a cure. Bowman then tells Barret that he’s dying of a disease and sends him to Rollin (a specialist) after arranging his early release. Meanwhile, Davis talks to Barret’s lawyer, who is providing information to his former partners.
While Barney and Willy work to assemble the fake cryogenic chamber, Barret goes to Rollin’s office where the IMF has planted a fake article on Jim’s research. Rollin confirms Bowman’s diagnosis and warns Barret that it will take at least four years for a cure. Barret tracks down Jim and volunteers for the freezing process, but Jim refuses. However, Jim then takes a phone call from someone and Barret overhears him agreeing to pay off the person at the other end. Barret then follows Jim to a park when he pays off Willy. Barret follows Willy to an apartment and breaks in, getting blackmail photos of Jim experimenting on his dying wife. He takes the photos and uses them to force Jim to blackmail him. Meanwhile, Gilbert and Singleton are trying to track down Barret now that he’s released but find his apartment empty.
Jim begins the (fake) procedure and knocks Barret out. He then wakes up in a futuristic hospital room, with a TV that shows news film of men with jetpacks. Rollin is now eleven years older and tells Barret that he’s now cured, but it’s the year 1980. Jim committed suicide and money is no longer valuable. Rollin tells Barret to stay for the police, who want to interrogate him.
Gilbert and Singleton meet with Davis who tells them about Barret’s plans. Barret looks up a map of the area where he buried the money on the phonovision, then slips out of the building to go to the money. However, he finds a newspaper outside with a date that says it’s now one day after the deadline. Realizing he’s been tricked but it’s now safe to get the money, Barret heads for the money. Gilbert and Singleton arrive and force Rollin and Jim (alive, of course) to reveal that they were trying to trick Barret into revealing the money so they could take it for themselves. They take Jim at gunpoint and force him to take them to the cemetery where Barret buried the money nearby. Willy sneaks up on Gilbert and knocks him out, while Singleton confronts Barret and reveals that the IMF newspaper is a fake, there is actually ten more minutes until the statute of limitations expires. Barret wrestles with Singleton and ends up shooting him, and the police arrive to take them all into custody.
