The Vault - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Jim pulls into a long-term parking lot and picks up his briefing on Miguel De Varo, the president of Costa Mateo. De Varo supports democracy and has announced a $40 million industrialization program with funds from the Presidential vault. However, his finance minister, Phillipe Pereda, has secretly removed the money and put in a Swiss bank. Since only De Varo can supposedly open the vault, which has a sonic key, Pereda plans to frame De Varo then take over the country. De Varo trusts Pereda and wouldn’t believe that his finance minister would betray him. The IMF must stop Pereda.

Jim assembles the usual team with a group of KDF International Auditors on standby. At the briefing the group tests a sound system and Rollin agrees he can do it. De Varo has perfect pitch so only he can use the sonic key, but Pereda has taped the tone and used it to get into the vault. Barney goes over the plans, including the emergency escape vault, and will need plenty of time which Willy will have to give him. Jim assures Cinnamon that Pereda will stay if they give him a reason not to run, and convince him to try the same scheme again.

In Costa Mateo, De Varo is discussing his travel plans with Pereda while Willy pulls up outside the building housing the Presidential vault and enters as a cleaner. Jim and Cinnamon arrive as representatives of an Eastern country who want to buy land in Costa Mateo for military bases. De Varo refuses and Pereda then checks with his aide, Paolo, and makes sure that the KDF auditors are arriving in the morning, and Paolo will plant the Swiss Bank account number on De Varo when he arrests him.

Willy cleans the floor in front of the security office and then Barney slips out of a compartment in the cleaning office. The auditors, led by Rollin, arrive to run the inspection. Barney goes to work on the security door that leads to the escape route from the security office to the vault, using a laser. Willy stalls the security guards long enough for Barney to get into the tunnel and close it behind him. Barney then starts to open the door at the end of the emergency tunnel.

Pereda calls Jim and Cinnamon and invites them over and they come up to his office. Barney gets the door open says he’s interested and De Varo will be out of office in 12 hours. Cinnamon admits she is authorized to cut a deal with him. Barney enters the vault’s antechamber and attaches a remote microphone to the vault door and rigs it into the light switch. A security guard approaches the vault from the main door as Rollin works outside, checks briefly, then goes away. Barney burns his way into the main vault then opens the deposit box with the money. He then triggers the alarm and opens the main door to the outside. A guard enters with Rollin following behind and spots Barney. Rollin knocks him out then Barney punches him so Rollin can “fake” collapse unconscious. Barney then enters the escape tunnel.

Pereda, Jim, Cinnamon, and Paolo enter the vault and interrogate the guard, who believes there were at least two thieves and they took the $40 million. Pereda explains to Jim and Cinnamon that he stole the money to frame the President and make it look like he took the money. However, now the money was “really” stolen so he can’t frame the President. Rollin then calls impersonating the President and talks to Pereda, saying he will come to inspect his money. Cinnamon suggests that Pereda temporarily cover the $40 million himself, then frame De Varo later. Cinnamon offers to distract Rollin for the hour and a half necessary for Pereda to provide the funds. Meanwhile, Barney in the escape tunnel prepares a recording device. Cinnamon finally “persuades” Rollin to come to her hotel room. Jim leaves with Pereda’s man and then Pereda plays back his recording of the sonic key to De Varo’s vault while Barney records it. Ortega checks the emergency tunnel where Barney is hiding, but Barney has strung up a false-front screen so he can hide at the other end when the man checks the passage and sees nothing.

Rollin then calls De Varo while disguising himself as De Varo, and Jim knocks out the man watching Rollin and Cinnamon. They have 25 minutes to get “their” De Varo in before the real one arrives. Rollin/De Varo then arrives to check the vault and asks to be alone in the vault to make his inspection. Once inside, Rollin lets Barney out and they use the recording to open De Varo’s vault and Barney test the device to remote-close the door. Rollin leaves and the real De Varo arrives as Pereda and Ortega start exchanging the money. Barney closes the door, sealing Pereda inside. Ortega can’t get the door open and starts loading up the money while Rollin tells De Varo that something odd is going on. De Varo confronts Ortega who has no idea why De Varo says he hasn’t been here. When they can’t get hold of Pereda, De Varo insists on opening his vault. Barney slips out as a security guard. De Varo orders Pereda and Ortega arrested while Barney escorts Rollin outside to the car where the team makes its escape.
