The Amnesiac - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Jim gets his briefing at a pool hall and the recording informs him that two years ago a sphere containing a rare-but-cheap radioactive liquid isotope, trivanium, was stolen from the U.S. by three men working for their East European country. One of the men, Johan, killed the second, Silff, and convinced the third man, their leader Major Paul Johan, that Silff stole the trivanium but was then died in a subsequent car accident. The IMF must recover the trivanium.

Jim assembles the usual team plus Monique, the Globe Repertory Company, and stunt driver Jack Ashbough. In the briefing. Jim reveals that Vorda planned to give the trivanium to the United People’s Republic in return for their backing his coup attempt, and their representative Erhard Poltzin still expects the trivanium before giving him their support. Johan stole the trivanium and now plans to sell it to an Asian countries in two days. Paris has studied the files on the deceased Silff and does a caricature of Monique just the way Silff did.

Jim arrives in Vorda’s country as a prominent amnesia specialist, and gets plenty of attention thanks to IMF-planned newspaper reports. Monique is playing in a bar that Johan frequent along with Alexa, Silff’s former girlfriend and a member of the country’s security office under Vorda. Monique plays Alexa’s and Silff’s song and when she meets with them, uses a lighter given to Silff by Vorda. She explains that she learned the song from a gentleman friend, who meets her there: Paris. Alexa notices Paris’ caricatures and his penchant for quoting Edmund Burke, both traits that Silff had.

Alena reports to Vorda about Paris before she leaves the country on an assignment. Vorda meets with Poltzin who has heard that someone is planning to sell the trivanium. The UPR will withdraw their support of Vorda if the trivanium sale goes through.

Willy gets Barney into the government file office in a fake cabinet, and Barney replaces Silff’s fingerprint file with Paris’. Johan then goes to Vorda’s office and finds him interrogating Monique about Paris. She explains that Paris was disfigured in a fiery accident and received plastic surgery, and gives them the name of a doctor before being released. The phone number is an IMF one and Barney answers as the doctor, confirming Monique’s story.

Vorda brings in Paris for interrogation and confirms he has Silff’s fingerprints because of the planted IMF file. However, Paris claims he’s had amnesia since he woke up from his accident two years ago. They let Paris go after getting a card from him with Jim’s number on it. They go to Jim, who reveals that Paris came to him for treatment but a brain tumor made any memory recovery risky. Vorda insists that Jim go ahead and do whatever it takes to recover Paris’ memories.

Johan confronts Monique, noting that the cigarette lighter is a fake. She admits it’s true and that she was Sliff’s girlfriend, and he boasted of how he was going to steal the trivanium and split the proceeds 50/50. She wants to be Johan’s partner.

Jim takes Paris through memory regression and he confronts a Man in the Shadows from his memories. Jim delays the treatment, citing the fatal stress, and when Johan comes in Paris reacts to him. Monique calls Johan and asks for a meeting: she wants out and convinces Johan that once Vorda has the trivanium, he will drop the investigation which will lead to Johan. Johan agrees and gives her the location of the trivanium in a military warehouse, so she can give it to Paris.

Barney, listening in, heads for the warehouse with Willy, Ashbough, and the Repertory Company. Paris demands that Monique visit him and Jim agrees as it will reassure him. Monique gives Paris the location of the military warehouse in a coded exchange and leaves, where she goes to the military base where the trivanium is hidden. She and Ashbough stage a phony car accident to distract the guards so that Barney, Willy, and the Repertory Company can slip into the warehouse and substitute a fake trivanium sphere filled with water for the real one. They then get the real one on a truck and slip out while Barney stays behind to spray fake dust and cobwebs to cover their tracks.

In the next memory session, Paris gives away the location of the warehouse and says that Johan was the one who killed him. Vorda calls Johan to meet him at the warehouse. He and Poltzin go there and find the sphere, while Barney slips out the back and leaps onto the departing IMF truck. Repertory Company members dressed as ambulance drivers get Monique out of there. Johan arrives and Vorda shoots him for his betrayal, then turns the (phony) sphere over to Poltzin, while the IMF makes their escape.s
