The IMF must steal a rocket laser from an Eastern Bloc country, then smuggle out Father Bernard and his list of operatives. However, when Bernard dies of a stroke and their contact is killed, the team manage to get the laser and break it down into five pieces to smuggle out of the country. In the country of Kansdorf in Eastern Europe, café owner Eric Schilling tosses a drunk out into the back alley and warns him not to come back, and then takes his wallet. The waitress, Clara Schram, looks on and Eric insists the drunk owed him for drinks. They go back inside and Eric watches his new waitress and photogirl, Dana, as she tends to a customer, Max Wittstock. It’s a meeting, and Dana writes a meeting time of 10:30 on a photograph for Max. Eric observes the handoff as Max goes on his way, but then hastily goes out the back way when a local policeman comes in. Out in the alley, Max burns the photo and walks away as the drunk wakes up. Eric comes out and sees the still-burning photo, and reads the part that says 10:30. ..Read the full recap
Barney: The rocket laser is a prototype. Each of the five sections is integral. Without one, the others are useless.
Dana: Meaning if only one of us gets out, it's a draw.
Paris: That's right. We don't have the weapon, but they don't either.
Doug: That's a comfort in case you're caught.
Dana: I'll try to remember that.
Clara Schram: What are you up to with that girl?
Eric Schilling: Clara, don't be jealous. What would I want with another woman when I have you?
Clara Schram: I love you too, Eric.
Eric Schilling: I seem to recall him now.
Colonel Kurt Eckert: He's dead. Shot.
Eric Schilling: Oh. I'm sorry.
Colonel Kurt Eckert: He was an enemy of the state.
Eric Schilling: In that case, I withdraw my condolence.
Eric Schilling: Clara, you don't appreciate me! That's not some creaky old sausage machine up there. (tapping his head)
Dana: You'll give him a gift for me.
Eric Schilling: But first he will give me a gift from you.
Dana: Eric, you think of everything, don't you?
Eric Schilling: Everything. I have a computer for a mind, Jenny.
When Dana signs Max's photo, she signs it in the center...
But when Max burns it outside, only one corner is left and it has two burned edges.
However, when Eric reads it, he sees the part in the center and it has three burned edges.
Later when he shows it to Clara, he has a corner piece again with only two burned edges.
