Mother's Day - Recap

The scene opens with Phil, Alex, Haley, and Luke in the kitchen. Claire walks in and they shout “Happy Mother’s Day”. They stop suddenly when they see that she has a t-shirt with hand prints on the breasts. Claire says that they made it for her for Mother’s Day before and also puts on a hat that says “Alex’s mommy”. Meanwhile, Jay gives Glory a diamond necklace. Manny gives her a necklace made out of fruit loops. Jay comes clean and says that they are not really diamonds and takes it back and says that he will get her real ones. Manny comes clean and says that the necklace isn’t made from Fruit Loops, but generic. He takes them back and Gloria doesn’t have a present now. At Mitchell and Cam’s, Mitchell comes in with Breakfast and says that he wanted to do something special. However, Cam knows that it is Mother’s Day and is offended that Mitchell thinks that he is the woman in the relationship. He lies and says that he doesn’t think so. However, they show several scenes where Mitchell is referring Cam as woman in their relationship. He goes out of the bedroom and tells Lily to forget the balloons because Cam is in a mood.

Later, Phil and Jay have Claire and Gloria take the kids on a hike while he and Jay make a Mother’s Day feast. Phil tries to turn on some music and dance around, but Jay says that they are not doing that and turns it off. Meanwhile, Claire and Gloria are having fun on the hike, whereas the kids are complaining and Luke talks about how coyotes are going to get them if they are not careful. Mitchell and Cam go to a party at the park and Cam says that it is a sensitive issue for people to treat gay people like women. The fathers of the group tell the mothers to gather for a picture and one of the moms tells Cam to join the picture. He is not happy. Claire, Gloria and the kids are still hiking and Haley and Alex continue to complain and Claire tells them that their hike is over and tells them that she and Gloria are going on with their hike and leaves the kids. In the kitchen, Phil has Onion Goggles and says that he won’t cry with the onions now. Jay asks about the recipe that his mother has and how long he is supposed to stir the beef. Phil mimics Julia Child’s voice and Jay doesn’t like it. Phil finds “The Perfect Mom” recipe that Jay wrote for him mom when he was little. Jay starts to get emotional and Jay blames the onions.

Back on the hike, Claire tells that sometimes she wants to punch her kids and Gloria says that she shouldn’t talk about her children like that. Claire gets Gloria to tell that she doesn’t like Manny is Perspicuity and his poetry is not good. Manny is right behind her and she lies that she was talking about another Manny. Meanwhile, Haley says that their mom is going to want them to apologize and they feel that Claire does it on purpose and they decide that they are not going to apologize this time. Back in the kitchen, Phil hugs Jay and he tells Phil to back away. Jay still denies that he was crying. After the party, Cam says that the group thinks that he is the woman and Mitchell says that Cam is kind of girly and more “momer”. A kid asks if he can throw a ball. Cam throws it and hits a man on a bike. He runs off with his hands flailing. Back at the hike, Gloria tries to tell Manny that she is sorry and Claire tells Manny that Gloria was only telling the truth in some ways and that he does need to act like a boy more. However, Gloria turns it around and says that it was Claire’s fault. Claire goes up to her kids and they don’t say that they are sorry.

At Gloria and Jay’s, Mitchell shows a Mother’s Day card to Cam and he rips it up. He says that it doesn’t make him less of a man. Claire goes downstairs and says that it is hard to have her Mother’s Day ruined. Luke is about to apologize, but Haley and Alex stop him. Claire asks Phil how it was with her dad and he says that Jay cried a little. Claire tells Mitchell and Cam and Cam tells Gloria. Jay comes up and Gloria is happy that Jay cried for his mom and Jay is upset that Phil told them. He tells Phil to get the wine and tells everyone to sit so they can enjoy the sauce. He sits down and starts to tell a story about his mom and then starts to cry. Cam goes over and hugs Jay and tells him to let it out. Haley and Alex break and apologize to Claire for the day. Phil comes in and gets upset that he wasn’t there to witness Jay breaking down and crying and moves in to hug Jay too. Later that night, Phil walks in the living room to find Claire and the kids snuggled on the couch. He takes a picture and they all wake up angry at him. The episode ends.
