The One That Got Away - Recap

The scene opens with Phil and Luke laughing at a birthday card that Phil is going to give Jay. However, Claire tells them that they are not going to give Jay that card. She says that everything is planned and Phil says that he got the bottle of Merlot to go with it. Claire asks if Haley and Alex have the video project that they were thinking of making for Jay. They tell that they just have to edit it. Claire says that she is giving Jay a recreation of a picture that was taken when Claire and Mitchell were kids. Mitchell comes over already dressed in a sailor outfit. Meanwhile Jay is at home getting ready to go out and go fishing when Cam comes over with Lily. Cam say that he wanted to have Gloria spend time with her, but in reality, Cam was tired of Lily from her crying. Gloria says that she has to go to the mall and Cam tells Lily not to cry and Gloria offers to take her.

Manny comes downstairs and asks where Jay is. Cam offers to help and Manny tells that he wants to impress a girl, but is scared because she is on the softball team. Cam says that they can toss the ball around to give Manny practice. Meanwhile, Phil is out when he runs into an old enemy from High School, Glen Whipple, and he tells Phil about his successes. Phil tries to impress with a coin trick, but it doesn’t go the way he wants. Gloria walks up to Phil and he says that he has to go to the card shop and will walk with her. Several people stop and congratulates them of Lily and they laugh it off. Phil asks if Gloria wants to go to the shoe store as well. Claire and Mitchell go to the house where they grew up and no one is home. Claire says that they are just going to the backyard and taking a picture and leaving. Jay gets ready to leave when he gets a call from the Dog groomers and he tells that Gloria must have taken his phone by accident. However, he has his phone and tells the lady that he is on his way.

Mitchell and Claire pose for the picture and a dog is there. They climb up into the tree house. Mitchell says that they are not going to come back. Claire’s van gets towed. Claire takes out the Merlot and opens it with Mitchell’s shoe. Cam gets a call from Manny and he tells him that he is trying to impress her and he tells her to tell her that she is the prettiest girl in the 6th grade. The customers think that he is talking to a 6th grader and Jay gets a call from Cam crying. He says that he got kicked out of a Bakery and asks Jay to pick up his own cake. Meanwhile, Haley and Alex are trying to edit the video footage that they got about Jay, but none of it is good. Luke says that he can edit it. Back in the tree house, Claire and Mitchell exchange stories and realize that they are getting too drunk. Mitchell says that Claire can throw a doll to distract the dog to be able to grab her phone.

Phil and Gloria are shopping and Phil tries to get Glen’s attention to show off Gloria. He comes over and thinks that Gloria is his wife. Glen says that he is surprised because he had always thought that he would marry Claire. He says that she was the hottest girl in school. Realizing that he made a mistake, Glen leaves. Jay picks up Mitchell and Claire and says that he could have wrecked his new pants. They get the cake and Gloria and Mitchell search for the candles. The dog grabs the cake and it falls. Cam asks Manny how his time with Tara, the girl he likes. Manny tells that she wants to go on a date to the batting cages. Cam tells that he just needs practice and instead of having Manny go with him, Manny tells that Jay loves stuff like that. Later after dinner, Luke says that Jay is not having a fun time because he keeps getting drinks. Jay comes in and Claire says sorry that he couldn’t go fishing. He says that he loves them. Phil tells that he is lucky to have Claire in his life. Jay opens his gift and it is a Lips phone. Jay realizes that it is a “sexy phone” instead of the saxophone.

They sit around and watch the film that Haley, Alex and Luke made and it short with the words “We Love You” and that is it. Everyone tells that it was lame and Jay says that it is fine. Manny calls him on his phone and tells him to come outside. Manny is in a boat in the pool and says that they can sit in the boat and have some drinks. Gloria and everyone want to get in the boat too. Mitchell tells Cam that he wants another baby and Cam offers to get a boy this time. Later that night, Phil tells Claire that he is happy to have her. He pulls a quarter and says that she will “change”. The episode ends.
