Mrs. Janet Novak and her playful foster kids are at the park enjoying their day. However, the good day turns when one of her foster kids named Tommy, goes missing. Janet then calls the police to help find Tommy. Fortunately, Tommy is found unharmed but with something your average toddler shouldn't have, a human pinky!
A few minutes later; Monk, Stottlemeyer, Disher, and Natalie come to the park to investigate the situation but aren't getting much progress. Monk, who is not good with kids, decides to interrogate little Tommy to see where he got the pinky from. Despite Monk's colleagues skepticism, Monk decides to do it anyway. While trying to do so, Monk develops a huge bond over Tommy that he almost gets to the point where he loves this little toddler more than Trudy and when Mrs. Novak loses custody of Tommy, Monk offers to be his temporary foster parent.
Monk and Natalie go to a coroner's office and begin to analyze who the pinky belongs to. Monk then notices residue on the pinky further concluding the person who owned the pinky was a violinist. In order to narrow down the pinky's owner, Monk and Natalie look for missing violinists in the city, one of the places said to have a missing violinist is the Carlyle residence where Daniel Carlyle, a professional viol inst is missing. Even though his mother denies it she then calls "Daniel" to prove she is right. Despite the fact, that "Daniel" came downstairs with a violin in his hands, Monk notices that the "Daniel" he saw isn't the real Daniel because he lacks the residue found in the pinky, giving Monk suspicion that Abagail and the impostor might have murdered the real Daniel. To prove his theory, he takes Natalie and Tommy to a local diner so they can spy on the Carlyles without getting noticed. However, they aren't doing anything that looks like they've recently committed a murder, instead they're making a huge withdrawal from the bank. This gives Monk a second theory, Daniel wasn't murdered, he was kidnapped!
Monk and Natalie later confront Abigail and the impostor in their house and later confess that the real Daniel was kidnapped and that they were lying about the impostor being Daniel, and instead was his older brother named Jacob. She says in order to prove it, they cut off Daniel's pinky, this explains that the missing pinky was Daniel's pinky. They said if they'd contact the police they'd kill Daniel which was the motive for their deception. Shortly after the conversation, the kidnappers leave them a phone call saying that they must deliver the ransom soon or else. Amazingly, Monk offers to give the ransom to the kidnappers, telling them he's Jacob. Monk isn't doing a good job delivering the ransom properly when having to do some aggravating tasks in his opinion, so he can deliver the ransom properly, like having to change in a locker room where there are other men and having to deliver it on a high roof top! Unfortunately, Monk throws the ransom money to the wrong person! This leaves the Carlyles no choice, if they want to see Daniel again they must call the police.
Meanwhile, many things are going on with Monk's life with a new friend and not enjoying it for the most part, to the point where he even calls 911 after Tommy poops in his pants! Despite all of this, Monk is growing a deeper bond with Tommy and notices that this toddler is growing up to be like Monk. For example, cleaning his spilled juice with pure concentration and cries when you make his pants uneven! With Monk's bond for the toddler growing like a weed, he considers adopting Tommy. Despite Natalie's criticism of the idea, Monk still plans to adopt Tommy. One evening when Monk is reading Tommy a story, he notices he took Natalie's lipstick out of her purse. Even though he scolds him briefly, he figures out how he got Tommy got the finger; he got it from his foster mom's purse! Monk then call Stottlemeyer and tells him to go to Janet Novak's house. Then Monk tells Tommy the story of how he solved the case and once the story ends, Monk then says that no matter how much he loved Tommy, he wouldn't have a happy ending if he lived with Monk and says he will better parents. The police then go to Janet Novak's house to arrest her and her husband and tell them where Daniel is. The police then open a shack and find Daniel alive. The episode then ends with Monk spending a few more moments with Tommy before going to his permanent foster parents and even though Monk is sad that he might not see Tommy again, he knows he is in the care of good foster parents.
