Mr. Monk and the Daredevil - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Monk and Natalie are at Dr. Kroeger’s office for a session, and Adrian’s arch-nemesis Harold Krenshaw is running late. Natalie is reading about the Frisco Fly, a masked daredevil who climbs buildings. Harold comes out and he and Monk insult each other. Later as Natalie and Monk leave Kroeger’s officer, the Frsico Fly is climbing a building and hanging from a parapet. He falls but an awning breaks his flaw. The crowd rushes up to help him and when he’s unmasked it’s… Harold Krenshaw.

Stottlemeyer calls in Monk to check out a mysterious death where the victim and the car were burned to render them unidentifiable, and the VIN numbers were filed off of all the car parts. Monk determines the car was in an accident before the fire, but is interrupted when Natalie arrives, walking through a patch of poison oak. She gives them the news that Harold was the Frisco Fly. They go to the hospital where a crowd of Frisco Fly fans are gathered outside. Monk and Natalie go to Harold’s room where his son is now looking up to him as a hero and his Cousin Joey is talking about how he knew Harold had it in him all the time. A skeptical Monk doesn’t believe the phobia-filled Harold could have possibly been climbing buildings but Harold taunts him, saying some people have it and Monk never will.

Monk and Natalie talk to the fans outside, and some of them confirm that they saw Harold. Adrian goes to check the building and with some coaxing Natalie gets him out on the high roof. They find Harold’s missing glasses, which seems to confirm that Harold was there. Monk has a session with Kroeger, who admits he didn’t know Harold had it in him either. Monk is clearly depressed and finally says that he’s giving up.

Disher is trying to identify the car from the murder scene and irritating Stottlemeyer when they get a call from Kroeger. They go to Monk’s apartment where they find the place a mess and Natalie and Kroeger have a depressed Adrian on suicide watch. The crowds grow outside Harold’s hospital room while Stottlemeyer refuses to let Monk go to the bathroom on his own, and Monk refuses to go with someone present. A battle of wills begins to see who can hold out the longest.

Harold is walking around the hospital with his cousin Joey and making fun of his newfound sixth-grade fans. Joey takes a call from Dr. Levene saying there is dying, but he covers it up and tells Harold he has set up a promotional deal.

Disher gets a lead on the unidentified dead man and everyone goes to his apartment where they discover the dead man is a Hungarian circus acrobat who was the real Frisco Fly. Natalie itches from poison oak and Monk realizes what happened.

At the hospital, Joey gets Harold up to the roof by convincing him the promotional people want to do a photoshoot. Joey gets Harold into the Frisco Fly suit and announces he plans to chloroform Harold then throw him off the roof so that he’s the only one to inherit their rich uncle’s money. Monk and Natalie arrive and Natalie fights with Joey, until Monk can overcome his fear of heights and grabs the chloroform and uses it on Joey while Harold cowers in fear. Monk then explains that Joey stumbled upon the accident, realized the dead man was the Frisco Fly, remove the identification from the car and body, then drugged Harold unconscious. Joey then dressed Harold in the Frisco Fly costume and threw him off a roof but Harold managed to catch the edge then survived the fall. Harold didn’t want to tell anyone something was wrong because he wanted the praise of his son… and to upstage Monk. Harold snaps at Monk… then falls off the roof by accident. Fortunately, the parachute opens saving him, and a depressed Monk walks off as Harold is cheered by the crowd.
