| Great Show But Directing Needs Work

!!!!!! This review contains spoilers !!!!!!
I'm probably one of Moonlight's biggest fans. Gotta love that Alex. That being said...
As a past head writer for a couple of daytime soaps (also an author of 20+ national bestselling novels--romance, crime, thriller, horror) perhaps I'm pickier than the average viewer. I learned on the job how plot lines should be followed through successfully and a lot of that depends on strong characterization and development. I feel that the characterization is lacking in this show. This particular episode screamed for development. The story line was great. Very exciting and could have been beautifully dramatic. As usual, Alex did a bang up job. However, Beth Turner's character left a lot to be desired. I'm sure she's probably capable of pulling off a dramatic scene, but you wouldn't know it judging by her lackluster performance. Our hero, Mick St John gave up his dream of being human by asking Joseph to turn him BACK into a vampire so he could save her, yet her response was more like a giddy girl just asked to the prom. Why wasn't there more heartache on her part for Alex's sacrifice? Her character, as always, comes across as disappointingly self centered. Shannyn Sossamon (Coraline) is a far superior actor and plays much better with Mick, so I hope they bring her back soon.
With this episode, more so than others, the writers and director seemed more focused on ramping up the romance than fleshing out what could have been a dramatic and touching chapter of their relationship. This is a drama, yet too often the characters are spun into romance novel caricatures, and in the end, I feel this will make the show suffer to non genre viewers. And by the way, the earlier scenes of Mick's strutting around the beach with his shirt open was just a tad bit degrating to his character. Less is more, guys! Try to remember that.
This show's strong point was the action sequences. Great effects and heartstopping images of what happens when you piss off the wrong Vamp. I particularly enjoyed Josephs's part. We saw a dimension of his character that has been lacking in previous episodes. Hope they use this character more. He and Mick work tremendously together. The scene when he is forced to turn Mick was darn gripping and had me on the edge of my seat.
It's obvious that Alex O'Laughlin's talent is best utilized in high drama, and therefore much of his talent is being wasted on syrupy sweet tidbits between Mick and Beth. The romance, again, is being shoved down the viewer's throats and by doing so the terrific sexual tension that propelled their earlier relationship is diffused by trite cliches.
In short, the director, David Barrett should stop straddling the fence and focus his efforts in developing a strong, impacting drama that will appeal to the greatest audience.
