| An incredible ride

This is one of my favorite shows on television and completely nice breath of fresh air. Long have I been tired, really tired, of laugh tracks. While I know this wasn’t the first, it has been common on HBO and what-not, it was one of the first that I really got into that was broadcasted on national TV. It so gives it that film comedy vibe. How this did not catch on sooner is beyond me.
The show itself is sweet and gross all at the same time. For instance, recently Earl and Randy went to see a hairy woman to apologize for tormenting her only to have Randy save a hair from her beard. It has a nice message of the Karma as the backdrop, but it is their adventures in righting wrongs that makes it so much fun. The hick town they live in is full of crazy, creepy, interesting, and disturbing people that cross paths with Earl on a regular basis like Patty the Day Time Hooker, Ralph, the one-eye postal character whose name eludes me at the moment, and Kenny James to name a few.
Jason Lee has done a tremendous job as Earl. His timing is amazing, though this has always been his strong point. The hair, the mustache, the flannel shirt all come together nicely to help build this character. It’s sometimes hard to imaging Earl as the lowlife he was after watch him now be so kind,… well, most of the time. The patience he shows Randy on a regular basis in real life would be hard to come.
Which leads me to Ethan Suplee’s wonderful interpretation of the dumpy, not so smart, Randy. This is easily the best performance by any of the cast. Randy is so much more complex as it pertains to playing him than he is given credit. If this was casted wrong, it could really have hurt the show as I believe he walks the line of dumb and endearing. Too much of one or the other and it doesn’t play right. Randy, as a character, is a wonderful comedic sidekick to Earl. Talk about seeing the world through a child’s eyes as an adult. I wait anxiously for all of his scenes.
Jaime Pressly was casted for what she does best, being loud, rood, and beautiful. The character of Joy is much like her characters in the films, Poor White Trash and Joe Dirt. Joy is so off the wall and gets so determined with what she wants to accomplish, that she totally has not regard with how it affects anyone and frankly, she doesn’t care. Yet, she has that love for her family that allows such a character to be able to be related to. Truly, it is such a good time to watch her.
Darnell is so laid back in all the chaos that ensues that it provides a nice calming affect to what can be a fast ride of craziness. While I don’t know much about Eddie Steeples, it’s nice to see him shine in this. Another big name actor would have only muddied the water, so to speak. Here it allows him to gel into a mix of relatively large names and still have his own moments. That is where he does his best work.
Nadine Velazquez is much the same as Eddie. She is a relative new comer that is one of the most stunning women around. Her character continues to develop with every episode. We now know more about her origin that got her here and what she did before becoming a housekeeper. She’s sweet, but can flame up in heartbeat, especially to Joy. Their interactions are always something to look forward to.
While I know that I’ve spent a lot of time on the cast and not so much on the show, but that what the show is to me. It’s a wonderful cast that gets into adventures of all kinds and the adventures are always different. They’re also always about someone new you haven’t met before with their own quirks. I could go through thousands of words, hell pages, on them, but that’s what episode reviews are for. I really can’t put into words how much I enjoy getting away from my everyday life and losing myself in this show. I just hope that I can continue to lose myself for a long time.
