The next part of the Chuunin exam is about to begin and this time the trial is much more to Naruto's liking. In the first part of the trial, a group has to attain two different scrolls, the scroll of heaven and the scroll of earth.
Each group receives one scroll to start with but the other one they must steal from one of the other groups. After attaining both scrolls, all three group members must arrive safely to tower located in the middle of the Forest of Death.
The examiner, Anko Mitarashi, starts the exam and the teams run off to the Forest of Death.

With Naruto stuck in a trap, Sakura decides to continue by herself. She runs into Orochimaru and Kabuto. Kabuto's words paralyze Sakura with fear. Just when all hope seems to be lost, Naruto comes to the rescue. A fierce battle between Kabuto and Naruto commences.
Kabuto uses chakra threads to connect his and Naruto's hearts together. This means that if Kabuto dies, Naruto dies as well. Sasame however arrives just in time to save the day.
Meanwhile, Jiraiya is having troubles of his own. The innocent looking woman isn't as harmless as he first thought.

The group is surprised to learn that the ninjas they thought were Kabuto and Orochimaru were in fact impostors. Naruto and Sakura must now battle three-headed behemoth consisting of members of the Fuuma clan. Arashi, Sasame's dear brother, is one of the monsters. Naruto is trapped in Arashi's chakra cage and is slowly being crushed to death. However, with Sasame's help, Naruto is able to break free. The battle ends tragically, but the Fuuma clan is once again free from Orochimaru's grip.
Back in Konoha, Sakura decides to become Tsunade's subordinate in hopes of becoming a skilful medical ninja.

Mizuki is planning to break out of the prison, with the help of brothers Fuujin and Raijin. Asuma Sarutobi and Kurenai Yuuhi are sent to investigate the disturbances. Naruto overhears Tsunade's, Asuma's and Kurenai's discussion and in his boredom decides to do some digging of his own. The Jounins arrive to the prison only to find the guards knocked out. They are overpowered by super powerful Fuujin and Raijin.

With Shino's expert knowledge about bugs, the group is able to find the forest where Bikochouu bugs might still exist. But it seems that they aren't the only ones trying to find this legendary bug!

Naruto, Shino and Kiba try to deceive the Kamizuru clan's ninjas. They give them a beetle transformed to look like Bikochouu with ninjutsu. But Kamizuru clan's ninjas know right away that the boys are trying to deceive them.
A fight commences. Our group is attacked by special attack beetles, but they manage to retreat. Their main goal now is to find Hinata.
The boys find Hinata in a bee cave, but quickly figure out that she is Suzumebachi instead. However, it's already too late as a huge explosion covers them in the remains of the beetle cave. Meanwhile, Hinata is trying to get out of a sticky situation of her own.

Naruto finds three knocked out men and carries them to Konoha's hospital. The men were attacked by Raiga, leader of brutal Kurosuke family. Kurosuke family has taken over the village of Katabame Kinzan Tsunade sends a group consisting of Naruto, Neji, Rock Lee and Tenten to take care of the Kurosuke family. Naruto isn't too eager to go on this mission. But when Rock Lee tells him that Raiga was once a member of Hidden Village of Mist's special group Seven Shinobi Lords, his mind quickly changes. Raiga might know something about Orochimaru's and Sasuke's whereabouts.
The group arrives to a small curry shop. Their Curry of Life saved Rock Lee's life once after an arduous training session.. Unfortunately, Sanshou's grandson Karashi has decided to join the notorious Kurosuke Clan. And to make matters worse Rokusuke, one of the men they were escorting, has ran off to help his good friend Kanpachi.

The intense fight between the Konoha ninja and Raiga begins. Raiga easily knocks the boys around. It seems that he has a surprising ally that works as his eyes, making it possible for him to always be one step ahead of his enemies. When Neji notices the other persons Chakra force, he orders Naruto to knock the pouch containing the person off from Raiga's shoulders. Without his 'eyes', Raiga is easily defeated.
The person inside Raiga's pouch seems to be Ranmaru, a fragile boy who has extraordinary seeing abilities. Raiga saved him from the shack he had lived his whole life in. For this, Ranmaru owes Raiga his life.

But Karashi, still hoping to become Kurasuke family's member, carries Ranmaru back to Raiga's corpse. With his special eyes Ranmaru manages to see that Raiga isn't dead after all. To save his best and only friend, Ranmaru risks his life by transferring his life energy to Raiga's body.

Raiga is enraged by the apparent death of Ranmaru. He decides to kill the Konoha ninja, whose fault it was he and Ranmaru got separated. Ten-ten tries to stop Raiga, but her weapon scrolls aren't enough to stop him. Ten-ten carries Ranmaru, who still has some life force left, to Sanshou-baasan's curry shop.
Raiga orders Karashi to lure the Konoha ninja into a trap. Karashi does as he's told to, but he isn't a very good liar. Neji and Rock Lee quickly see through his bluff and the group stays alert for any sudden attacks. Soon enough Raiga appears and a fierce battle between the boys and him commences.

On their journey they meet a seemingly friendly bounty hunter called Sazanami. However, after Sazanami finds who the Konoha group is after, he lures them into a trap and knocks them out. It seems that he alone wants to take revenge on Gosunkugi.
Sazanami attacks Gosunkugi but everything doesn't go as planned. Fortunately, Naruto and his friends manage to save him.

The group meets Mousou, the Feudal Lords right-hand man. They come to the conclusion that it must be Koumei, the strategist, who is behind these odd events. Later, the group tries to meet Sagi, the new Feudal Lord. However, Sagi is attacked by a group of ninjas that appeared from the river. Naruto and his friends quickly take them out.
Later, the Naruto sees Koumei sneaking out to meet Noroimusha. Again, a fight breaks out between the ghost and the ninjas.

Koumei is imprisoned. The case seems to be solved. But Naruto refuses to quit before the secret behind Noroimusha is solved.
Naruto manages to find out how the Noroimusha impersonator was able to fly. He also finds a secret tunnel that leads to Feudal Lord's mansion. But before he gets to tell his friends about his new findings, he is thrown into prison.
Neji and Ten-ten are forced to leave the Bird Country. Naruto is sentenced to death for reasons unknown. And to make matters worse, Noroimusha appears in Naruto's jail cell!

Neji, Ten-ten and Kakashi return to the village. Just before Koumei's death sentence is put into motion, Noroimusha appears and saves him. Kakashi is forced to fight a wandering ninja, who has a wide variety of powerful techniques.

Sagi plans to take revenge on Mousou. In his Noroimusha armour, he confronts Mousou, but can't defeat him alone. After Mousou cuts Sagi's armour, his, or actually hers, true identity is revealed. She is really Toki, Sagi's twin sister.
Several ninjas appear to help Mousou. However, Naruto and Kakashi arrive to help.
Mousou distracts our group with a trick, giving him enough time to grab Toki and run away. Naruto goes after him.

However, after the envelopes get mixed up, Naruto and Jiraiya must catch the courier ninja. The task isn't as easy as it sounds.

Hidden Star Village’s most valued artifact, the fallen star, has been stolen. Naruto was unable to stop the thief, who flew using his chakra by using a technique called Mysterious Peacock. Only those who have trained near the star are able to use this technique.
The Star Village’s leader, Akahoshi, is reluctant to accept help from outsiders. He sends the Konoha ninja to a wild goose chase so he and his subordinates can locate the star themselves. However, the Konoha group can't be fooled that easily. Neji orders Rock Lee and Tenten to spy on Akahoshi, whereas Naruto is to keep an eye on Sumaru.

Hoshikage ordered Natsuhi to make sure the star would never be used for training again.

The group plans to travel back to Konoha with Sumaru and Natsuhi and ask for Hokage’s permission to put a stop to Akahoshi’s evil actions. But Natsuhi has other plans; she is going to destroy the star once and for all!

Rock Lee and Naruto are "bonding" by fighting each other to a draw near a river (Lee vs. 100 of Naruto's Shadow-Clones) when Sakura comes to tell them they have a mission. Naruto, Sakura and Lee are assigned to guard Gantetsu, a captured rogue ninja. He was part of a gang called known as "Shinobazu". The Leaf ninjas will help to transport him to the capital village of the Forest Country, where he will be tried for his crimes. They quickly discover that this will not be an easy mission.

Naruto learns that the captain of the guard, Todoroki, has a personal grudge against Gantetsu. Meanwhile, the rest of the Shinobazu gang prepares to attack. They dig a huge trench, diverting part of the river into the forest. One of them uses a chakra-infused wire to cut the ship in half. The top half, with Sakura and Rock Lee, continues to drift downriver. Meanwhile, the bottom half, with Naruto, Gantetsu and Todoroki, is drawn into the new channel. The gang, led by Shura Sanjuro, lands on the bottom half and demands that Gantetsu be turned over to him. Naruto declines, of course.

After barely escaping they end up in the forest that the base of the shinobazu is located. Can Naruto lead them out or will they have to trust Gantetsu to lead the way?

This episode starts with a flashback to The Forest of Bewilderment where Todoroki attacks Gantetsu. When Naruto tries to stop him, he reveals to Naruto that Gantetsu killed his brother and his family five years ago. However, Todoroki does not know that Akio, his little brother, is still alive. Todoroki tells Naruto through a flashback how his home burned, how his parents were killed by the Shinobazu, and how he saw Gantetsu holding Akio hostage as the house burned. The house collapsed around all three of them, and that was the last time Todoroki saw Akio. After the fire,Todoroki trained for years so that he might find Akio and kill the Shinobazu, because his brother's bones were never found, unlike his parents', in the wreckage of his burned house.
