The fact that the Kyuubi no Kitsune (nine-tailed demon fox) has nine tails refers to a myth, which states that for every 100 years a fox lives, it receives one tail. When they reach the age of 1000, they receive their ninth and last tail, gaining both immortality and infinite wisdom.
