Rock Lee and Naruto are "bonding" by fighting each other to a draw near a river (Lee vs. 100 of Naruto's Shadow-Clones) when Sakura comes to tell them they have a mission. Naruto, Sakura and Lee are assigned to guard Gantetsu, a captured rogue ninja. He was part of a gang called known as "Shinobazu". The Leaf ninjas will help to transport him to the capital village of the Forest Country, where he will be tried for his crimes. They quickly discover that this will not be an easy mission.

Naruto learns that the captain of the guard, Todoroki, has a personal grudge against Gantetsu. Meanwhile, the rest of the Shinobazu gang prepares to attack. They dig a huge trench, diverting part of the river into the forest. One of them uses a chakra-infused wire to cut the ship in half. The top half, with Sakura and Rock Lee, continues to drift downriver. Meanwhile, the bottom half, with Naruto, Gantetsu and Todoroki, is drawn into the new channel. The gang, led by Shura Sanjuro, lands on the bottom half and demands that Gantetsu be turned over to him. Naruto declines, of course.
