Over the course of the timeskip, Jiraiya teaches Naruto how to more readily access the demon fox's chakra. In doing so, Jiraiya is for a second time in his life brought to the brink of death, with Naruto in his four-tailed demon fox form being too much for Jiraiya to handle. Upon returning Naruto to Konoha, Jiraiya disappears so that he can research Akatsuki's whereabouts and motives.

Gaara's character has changed quite a bit thanks to Naruto's influence. To his credit, he no longer acts hostile when in the presence of others. He is friendly towards his siblings, and he values other people's lives over his own. Gaara has become much more open, and he is willing to talk to others, especially his brother Kankuro, about his problems and dreams. Having become the Fifth Kazekage, Gaara begins risking his life to protect the village. He also seems to have many admirers now, especially among the younger females of the village.

Neji makes his Part II debut sporting traditional Hyuga robes and longer hair. Neji is still a very serious person, but he seems to be somewhat more cheerful and docile. Neji also seems to be more willing to use teamwork in battle, being quick to save his teammates when they are in trouble. His abilities seem to have increased, as his Byakugan can see several times farther than it could in Part I. He has also learned Eight Trigrams Empty Palm, adding a long-range attack to his arsenal. Unlike his teammates, Neji has become a Jonin over the timeskip, indicating that he has put a great deal of effort into improving himself.

After the timeskip, trouble begins to loom for the Fifth Hokage. Not only does the Konoha council question how she treats Naruto, but even her attendant Shizune, one of the people she trusts the most, begins to doubt the wisdom of her decisions. However, much like most other people Naruto encounters, Shizune is later swayed to believe that he will one day achieve greatness.

During Naruto's two-and-a-half year absence, Temari has advanced to the level of Jonin. She is first seen in the first episode walking with Shikamaru when they run into Sakura and Naruto. She is now acting as a liaison between Sunagakure and Konohagakure as they prepare for the new round of Chunin examinations.

Shikamaru makes his Naruto: Shippuuden debut walking alongside Temari. Despite growing noticeably taller, his appearance has not changed overall. However, he also now wears a black long sleeve tunic, along with the vest many Konoha ninja wear. He has learned a new jutsu: Shadow Sewing, which uses shadow tendrils to restrain or impale multiple targets. He also takes on the responsibility as a Chunin Exam proctor in addition to his role as a teacher at the academy.

Over the time skip, Kankuro has become a Jonin-level ninja and has added a third puppet, Sanshouo, to his arsenal, the abilities of which are unknown. He also has more purple paint lines on his face. He also now keeps his puppets contained in summoning scrolls on his back. Kankuro has also developed a closer relationship with Gaara, who no longer views Kankuro as an annoying family member. Gaara also seems to have begun to confide in Kankuro, sharing his dreams of wanting to risk his life to protect Sunagakure with Kankuro. As such, Kankuro has become very protective of Gaara, willing to challenge anyone who puts Gaara down in his presence.

After the timeskip, Lee is largely the same as he was in Part I, still idolizing Guy. He has become a Chunin over the timeskip, and now wears a tactical vest like Guy, further increasing the humorous resemblance between them.

Over the timeskip, Tenten has become a Chunin. Her arsenal of weaponry also seems to have expanded, as she now keeps her weapons in one large scroll instead of two smaller ones.

Maito Gai is the extremely zealous leader of Team Gai, consisting of Rock Lee, Sai, and Tenten. Known for his thick eyebrows, green jumpsuit, and shiny bowl haircut, Gai often refers to himself as "Konoha's Prideful Green Beast". Gai's favorite foods are super-spicy curry rice and curry udon, though he finds it impossible to dislike food. His favorite phrase is "Bursting with youth!"
