John is swimming late at night while thinking about Sara. Eva comes in to check up on him after his recovery from the gunshot several weeks ago, and tells him to take it easy since he's off-duty. John isn't concerned and wants to get back to work. They're interrupted when Eva gets a call and goes to Hell's Gate on the East River where Callie and Santori are covering the case. The victim is a Martine Shane and John decides to drop by, recognizing the area.
1927
John and another man are running a scam on Fiske, and start to split up the money. Fiske come along and shoots John, and the other man drops the money and takes off running. It turns out that Fiske is using blanks and he's John's partner, and they split the money.
The Present
John notices that the corpse is missing a victim, and Callie orders him off the case. However, John grabs a police radio to keep track of their case. He then goes back to his apartment where Sara is sleeping. She wake sup and expresses astonishment at his miraculous recovery, the second since she's known him. She invites him along on a weekend to her parents' house in Montauk and knows John isn't working a case, so he agrees.
John then goes to the morgue and talks to Mank, confirming that Martine was strangled by someone strong and then dumped into the water afterward. Eva and Callie arrive and John claims he's just visiting. Up in the squad room, John bribes Santori into faking stomach problems so he'll call in John. John and Eva talk to Martine's roommate Kayla who says that Martine was an actress dating Robert Browning, a commodities broker.
1927
John and Fiske are preparing for a con when John spots Olivia Behrendt, an actress, and is attracted to her.
The Present
John and Eva visit Browning on his boat, and he says he had a break-in a week ago and called the police. However, he claims not to know anything about Martine's murder and figures she took off to have some time alone. John tries to find out where he was the night of the murder and whether he took his boat out, but Browning tells them to get out.
1927
John and Olivia flirt and she realizes that he's a grifter, and she's one too. She offers to teach him some new cons in return for half of his take.
The Present
Omar visits John at the pool and wants to know what he plans to do with Sara since she isn't the One. John still believes she is, despite the fact that he's still immortal and survived the gunshot. However, Omar figures the One was someone else in the subway station and that John needs to tell Sara the truth.
Eva and John confirm that Browning's neighbors heard a fight the night of Martine's disappearance, and he took the boat out. They get a warrant and search the place and smell bleach that indicates he cleaned the place recently. John spots a brochure for "Soulmates," a dating service. They also find a bloody towel but Browning claims it belongs to one of his workmen.
1927
John is sleeping with Olivia but secretly steals a rare Napoleonic gem from her.
The Present
John and Eva got to Soulmates and talk to Inga Skoll, the owner. She says she was the one who set up Browning and Martine. After they threaten to go to the press unless she gives them her records, she points them to the other men that Martine dated. She broke up with all three of them and they mention that someone robbed them shortly after the breakups. One of them notes that John bears a startling resemblance to a turn-of-the-century furniture maker, Benwarr.
John and Eva are called to the boat where Browning tried to call himself. Browning eventually admits that he tried to slit his wrists because of grief over Martine, but despite the fact he knew she was a thief he doesn't believe she was responsible for the robbery a week ago.
1927
John meets with Fiske who tells him to be careful about falling love. John considers giving the gem back.
The Present
John and Eva talk to the detective in charge of the burglaries, who directs them to a fence, Ray de la Cruz. Ray is on the run but before John can pursue the matter, Callie spots him and takes his gun. John has Omar track down Ray then talks to Inga. She doesn't remember who referred Martine to Soulmates but promises to find out. However, when John goes back to talk to Kayla, she says that Inga recruited Martine as a client. John also spots a photo of Martine with Inga at the apartment.
Once the lab confirms the blood on the towel matches Martine, Eva and Santori go to arrest Browning. John passes and locates Ray, and brings him down after a short pursuit. He threatens him with attempted murder and Ray admits that he dealt with a woman anonymously and fenced her stolen goods.
That night, John does a check on high school graduation records while Sara wonders what's wrong. He then talks to Browning and says he doesn't believe the broker is the murderer. John figure someone is setting Browning up, and asks what was stolen, Browning mentions an engagement ring that wasn't on Marline's corpse. The broker also admits that he once heard Marline arguing on the phone with an ex-lover, but he never tried to find out about her past.
1927
John and Olivia are in bed slowly becoming more honest with each other. She wonders at her scars, and finally admits she's a farm girl from Michigan.
The Present
John calls Inga in to the police station, but when she arrives he's having a fight with Callie that ends in his suspension. Inga offers him a ride and they go to Omar's bar where John starts drinking. He finally says he knows she's Susie Barkowski and she was working with Ray to fence goods to pay off her debts. Inga and Martine were a team: Inga would spot the marks using her computerized dating service and then set the up with Martine, who would rob them. Now that he's suspended, he offers to sell her the location of Browning's hidden safe that he found during the investigation, a safe holding a rare Napoleonic gem.
That night at the boat, a woman sneaks on board and goes to the safe. John brings her down and it turns out to be Kayla. John's suspension was a set-up to lure the thief to the boat. Kayla, Marline, and Inga were working together, as Inga and Kayla knew each other in high school. They recruited Marline, who became Kayla's lovers. Marline broke up with the jealous Kayla when she truly fell in love with Browning, and Kayla killed her and cut off her ring with the engagement ring. She kept the ring, letting them connect her to the murder and make the arrest.
1927
John tries to return Olivia's gem but she spots him and he tries to explain. She doesn't buy it and tells him to get out, but lets him keep the gem: a fake all along.
The Present
John goes to see Sara as she prepares to leave for their weekend together. He breaks it off with her, and she insists he's delusional with his claim he's 400 years old. When she asks if there's someone else he hesitates since the One is still out there. She slaps him and leaves, saying she's going to get as far away from him as possible. John is left alone.
