A brutal rapist-murderer kills a nun and Amsterdam investigates an Amerindian photographer's assistant, Amartya, who survives another attack but refuses to testify against her attacker. John convinces her to testify but the rapist is cleared on a technicality and Amartya is murdered. John goes after the killer and must balance honor against revenge.

As they investigate, John and Eva make a connection between a homeless shelter and a guitar that the victim kept in his locker. Meanwhile, John thinks back to his addiction and a 12-step program he entered in 1964 after finding himself in a psych ward following too many nights of drinking and passing out.

Flashbacks to John's start as a homicide detective help him to put together the clues, as well as aid John in realizing he may be near the end of his quest for love.
