Show FAQ
So why didn't they use Ron Updyke and Miss Emily or anything about Chicago from the 70s series?:
Several lawsuits were filed over the original TV movies and the 1974 series. The original author and Kolchak creator, Jeffrey Grant Rice, sued ABC for using the Kolchak "name" without his permission to create the series. Rice eventually won ownership rights... but only over literary publication of the Kolchak character, using material from his own original work, the TV Movies, and the TV series. ABC had the rights to use anything from the two TV movies. Universal Studios had the rights to use anything from the TV series. Since ABC/Touchstone produced the new series, they could only use characters from the TV movies such as Kolchak and Vincenzo, as well as Agent Fain and Titus Berry.
