Orry Main, heir to a large South Carolina planter family, meets George Hazard, whose family owns a large Pennsylvania foundry, on their way to West Point. They become close friends and bond closely through their years at the military Academy. Episode one ends with Orry being forced to watch Madeline, the love of his life, married to the cruel Justin LaMotte.
