George and Constance get married, but all is not happiness and bliss when his brother, Stanley, proves to be an adversary in business matters. Virgilia’s anti-slavery rants become even more extreme and she outrages both families when the Mains visit Pennsylvania for the summer. Orry’s cousin Charles, who was previously thought of as only a minor member of the family, proves himself to be a gentleman and Billy Hazard develops and admiration of the Main girls.
