Even though this looks like your typical run-of-the mill drama show, it's oddly entertaining. The characters each have a depth and complex back-story that helps the show be a little less soap-operaish than most drama series. The plot is original (in parts) -- Nick leaves home, writes a novel about his hometown, which angers the town in the process, then returns home only to find everything has changed.
But the show isn't perfect. The story lines are very predictable, but each episode is fairly well-written. However, even with only a handful of season 1 episodes, the story often drags. The cast features some good actors/actresses -- Laura Prepon and Bryan Greenberg (whom I loved in One Tree Hill) in particular -- but some of the other cast members' performances fall flat.
However, if you're looking for an hour of mindless entertainment, October Road will fill that need. But if you want a fast-paced original drama, you may want to look elsewhere.
