Ben calls in the medivac crash, with six on board. He lists the six as
Julio and Felicia, previously injured, and Lynn (Julio's life partner),
Felicia's sister, the medivac pilot and his co-pilot, all previously
uninjured. The medical team arrives, but where's Lily?
Kissing in the waterfall with Mateo. She invites him to go get a drink,
but for her safety, he advises against it. She gets the 911 page,
medivac down.
Ben & Otis are driving out to the crash site. Ben notices Cole's leg is
jumpy, and asks if he's okay. He says sure; he's been to sites like this
before and knows what he's getting into. Ben's not so sure Otis isn't
high, since he just saw his dealer yesterday for the first time in the
better part of a year.
They arrive at the site, and Ryan claims it's going to be okay, simply
because she put two little girls in that twisted piece of metal. Tommy
tries to force Charlie to hang back, because it's far too dangerous, but
he refuses. Tommy insists.
They have survivors. Lynn says she's fine. She's bruised and bloody, but
does leave the copter under her own steam. But where's Felicia? She was
holding her sister's hand when the door blew off - and then she was
gone. Ryan helps the sister out, and she too is able to walk. Ryan
assures her she will find Felicia.
The co-pilot is in a lot of pain from his leg. He says the pilot,
Guillermo, is the only reason they're not all dead. When the rotor blew,
he held steady. Armando wants to stay and help the pilot, but Z says no.
He has a chest contusion, therefore he is going with the first wave of
wounded back to the clinic.
Guillermo is awake and responsive, but stuck. He thinks it must be his
seat belt. "Oh, that ain't your seat belt, amigo" Ben says. The man is
impaled. He says it doesn't even hurt, and Ben tells him that's the
adrenalin, hard at work. Otis comes up with the news that the gas tank
has been compromised, and they could all blow up. Guillermo wants them
to go, and leave him there. He feels he's done enough damage, he doesn't
need three dead doctors on his conscience as well.
Mina and Lynn trade quips and insults. Lily finally arrives at the
accident scene. She sees the flames and gasoline right before the
explosion, but the three doctors do free the pilot and are in the clear
when it hits.
Mateo says goodbye to Lily as she leaves for the clinic. They still
can't find Felicia, so Ryan goes looking. Ben tries to talk her down,
but she insists on going to look. She tells him she knows she didn't get
a chance to respond when he said he was ready. She blurts "I'm glad you
didn't blow up." They both laugh, and Ben says they have all the time in
the world to talk. Otis catches up with Ryan as she leaves. She notices
how shaky he is. After she walks away, he pulls the little heroin bag
out of his pocket. Apparently he's in the middle of actively fighting
his addiction.
Mina goes to let Lynn know her boyfriend is going to be fine. Lynn is
going to see him when her legs give out from under her. She can't feel them.
The team looking for Felicia takes a break, but Ryan keeps looking. She
pages Z. Felicia's mom is a bit hysterical, and won't let Z take her
remaining daughter anywhere.
Mina runs tests on Lynn. She can't feel anything. It looks like a spinal
cord injury. They're going to have to operate. It's not exactly what
they're equipped for here. Even if they could medivac her out, she
wouldn't get there in time. Lynn tells Mina to fillet her like a fish.
She trusts her.
Tommy sees that Charlie got injured, and he's angry at him for not
staying with the truck. Tommy comes down hard on him. He didn't need
Charlie's help. Charlie is just a kid. He's only being nice to him, but
one of these days he is going to get seriously hurt, and that's going to
be on Tommy. He sends Charlie home, but Charlie protests that he works
there.
Tommy pulls a nurse aside and gives her orders. Dress Charlie's wound,
put him in a cab (Tommy holds up the money for it) and make sure he gets
home. He leaves, and Charlie is not happy.
Ben goes to work on Guillermo. He doesn't want surgery yet. If they
bring Felicia back, the OR should be open for her. Armando lets the
doctors know just how stubborn Guillermo is. If he doesn't want the
surgery yet, there will be no surgery. He and Armando exchange loud,
angry words in Spanish to the bemusement of the doctors.
Mina tells Cole her patient needs spinal surgery immediately. She found
a book in Ben's office. Otis laughs as he asks if she intends to do
delicate spinal surgery from a book. No, she doesn't. He'll do it. He's
a navy doc. He's also a shaky mess. He tells Mina to prep her.
Ryan prays her way through the jungle in a fit of rage at God. She loses
her footing, slides down a hill and lands less than 10' from Felicia.
She thanks God and collapses.
Mina, Tommy and Lily are trying to find all the proper equipment for the
spinal surgery. Lily says they could use Charlie's help, and Tommy
announces that he sent him home. Was he mean to him? No! But Tommy isn't
a babysitter, he doesn't have time for this. Lily says Tommy may be all
Charlie has, even if it is difficult to practice medicine with a kid
velcro'd to you 24/7. Ben interrupts to announce to Mina that she's got
20 minutes til surgery. He returns Lily's pager to her. She needs to
keep a closer eye on it. It was Mateo who returned it. He also paged it.
"You might need this - Batman". Tommy says he's smooth, Mina says he's
hot, and Lily reaches the conclusion that he's a smooth, hot criminal
and it should never be this difficult to set up a second date. She also
finds the one piece of equipment that Lynn's surgery can't happen without.
Otis finds the culprit and almost immediately has to give Mina a strong
talking to. She's so busy beating herself up for letting Lynn walk last
night, that she's shaking, and his field of work is losing ground. Mina
notes that Lynn's heart rate is at 120. Cole asks her if she is "on top
of her biz", and when she snaps back that she is, he says Good. Then you
clamp off the artery. She wasn't the one shaking, he was.
Ben says the OR is almost free again, now that Otis and Mina are done.
The pilot wants to know if they found the girl yet, and Ben tells him
no. But if they wait any longer on his procedure, they risk serious
infection. He finally agrees.
Tommy runs after Ben, and asks about Charlie. Does he have family? How
did he end up here? Charlie's parents abandoned him when he was nine. He
started doing odd jobs, and he was good, so they kept him around, paid
him, got him a room, etc. Tommy notes that Charlie always seems so
happy, and Ben says that he wasn't when they first met him. In fact, he
really didn't get to smiling on a regular basis until Tommy arrived. Ben
says he has some influence on that kid.
Ryan is carrying Felicia to the rescue team. She whistles, but nobody
responds. She can't carry Felicia anymore, her heart is overworked. She
fills Felicia in on their shared medical history. She talks Felicia
through preparing a Lidocaine syringe. Felicia asks if this is going to
happen to her someday, and Ryan tells her they won't let it.
In surgery, Otis, Tommy and Ben are working on freeing Guillermo. When
they quarter-turn him, an arterial tear develops and he starts bleeding
out. They see the tear, and it's imperative Otis not be shaky. Cole says
he can't do it. Ben sends for Brenner or Menard. He asks if Otis is high
right now and the answer is 'no'. Good.
Julio and Lynn are recovering in adjoining beds. Lynn has the sensation
back in her legs. Lynn starts laughing and she can't stop. This isn't
normal. She's not on pain medication. She's blown a pupil. Blood's
building under her skull from the trauma. Mina is emotionally-invested.
Lynn can't die. Tommy sees that Mina and Brenner are involved, he needs
somebody else. He finds Charlie under a table in supply and preps him.
Charlie walks into surgery and says "10 blade" because he's always
wanted to. Tommy tells Ben that he needs steady hands. Charlie's are the
steadiest. He deals from the bottom of the deck (Charlie: "WHAT?! I
don't do that!!") Yes he does. He's that steady. And everybody else is
busy. Charlie hops on a stool and does his part to perfection. Tommy
congratulates him.
Lynn is in surgery. Nobody can help Mina except Lily. They have to use
an antiquated drill to relieve the pressure on her skull. It's better
than nothing. Mina goes for it.
Ben tells Mina he couldn't have done a better job himself. Julio doesn't
believe she's going to get better. Mina goes and tells him that she
believes Lynn can pull through. There is such a thing as a medical
miracle. He says we're only allowed so many miracles. He figures they've
already had their share.
Ryan arrives, carrying Felicia. Eva (her mom) is overjoyed. Ben worries
about Ryan. Eva says Ryan will not be examining Felicia. She let her put
her girls in the helicopter, and they almost died. She adamantly refuses
to listen to Ryan, essentially handing her daughter a death sentence.
Somebody needs to get through to her.
Tommy and Otis give a post-op exam to Guillermo. He has no sensation in
his left foot. Cole's guess is that there's lumbar bruising, which will
alleviate with time, returning full mobility. He needs both feet. Tommy
says that with intense physical therapy, he could bounce back in a year
or two. Guillermo makes a prompt decision to give up. Armando won't let
him. It's his turn. He'll take Guillermo to therapy every day for one to
two to ten years. Armando keeps holding his hand out, and Guillermo
slaps it away repeatedly until he takes it. He calls Armando a "stupid,
stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid - friend."
Z tells Ryan of Felicia's injuries. Ryan is still wanting to get her
treated, or she'll need a new heart in 20 years. Z says "Then she'll get
one, just like you will get one." Ryan can't believe she knows. Z can't
believe nobody gets how insightful and aware she is. Does Ben know? No.
Ryan was going to tell him but now she can't bring herself to do so.
Julio realizes it's almost over. He takes Lynn's hand, just as she
flatlines. He brushes his fingertips on her face.
Otis drops his little bag on Ben's desk. He didn't use it. Not through
the rescue, or two surgeries. He never touched it, but he wanted to. He
was shaking like a leaf, he wanted it so bad. Ben's grateful not every
day is like today was. He gives Otis a box of candy. Wrong flavor, man!
Grape? Grape is horrible! Chicks don't like grape. Orange. He needs orange.
Ryan runs the necessary meds out to Eva before she leaves. The mom gives
her permission to say goodbye. She gives Felicia her charm bracelet and
tells her to remember what she accomplished today. She can handle
anything now.
Charlie practices suturing a banana. Tommy tells him he's doing a pretty
good job, but Charlie doesn't respond. Tommy tells him a story about his
pet hamster. One day he came home from school, and his hamster was gone.
Eventually, he found his body under Tommy's bed. Charlie angrily denies
that he's going to die under Tommy's bed. He tells him he has a place.
Tommy needs to see it. He needs to know Charlie is safe when he's not at
the clinic. He needs to know Charlie isn't in a cardboard box in an
alley somewhere. Charlie nods his understanding, but tells Tommy he's
going to be really mad. Tommy says he can handle it.
"What the hell?!" Charlie is house sitting a timeshare. That's what he
does. Wanna play foosball? Sure! Tommy hasn't played foosball since
college. He sets down his soda on the dining room table. Charlie is
right behind him with a coaster.
Ben finds Lily burning the midnight oil. She says she came here to be a
doctor, not find love. Ben says she has great instincts. If her gut is
telling her something is right, she can bet it is.
Ryan tells Ben she needs his help.
Otis finds Mina sitting at Lynn's side. Her face is red and
tear-stained. When he puts the sheet over Lynn's face, she cries again.
He tells her it's not the same, She doesn't seem to hear him, so he
repeats it 2-3 times. This isn't like Eric. She didn't kill Lynn. He
holds her while she cries.
Ben does an ultrasound and tells Ryan what shape her heart is in. She's
in heart failure.
Lily takes a taxi to Mateo. He says she shouldn't have come. She sees
his crop, and wonders what it is. Coca - cocaine. It's a very big crop.
