David goes to see Regina and demands an explanation about the ruined hat. When he says that the people want her dead, Regina figures that no one would risk coming with her but David is aware that she's having trouble with her magic. He tells Regina that she's only alive because Henry wants it. Regina claims that she's long since forgotten where she got the hat and would rather discuss Henry. David demands to know how he can get his family back but she warns him that they were sent to a void, and once she gets her magic back she'll get Henry back. David points out that if she needs magic to hold on to her son then she doesn't really have him and then leaves.

Once Upon a Time

Regina rides through the woods to freedom only for vines to animate and snatch her back. Cora arrives and explains that she has cast a barrier spell from her book that will prevent Regina from leaving without the king. Regina insists that she only wants to be free but Cora tells her that power is freedom and tells her that she's there to show her.

David finds Henry and everyone runs up to the prince with questions. He ignores them and finds the Mother Superior, and asks if there is a tree in the real world that will let them go back to their world. The dwarves arrive and Leroy explains that if they cross the border then they lose their memories and become their cursed selves for good. Sneezy now only remembers himself as the town pharmacist. Everyone starts to panic and David finally yells for attention. He tells them to come back in two hours to hear his plan to fix everything. As David walks off, Ruby asks what the plan is and David admits that he doesn't know.

At her home, Regina tries to light a candle but barely raises a sputter. She hesitantly steps outside but discovers that Dr. Hopper is waiting for her. He suggests that Regina might talk about her and learn who she is, and Regina tells Hooper that she knows who she is as she drives off.

Once Upon a Time

Regina is attending to Snow, who finds Regina's ring in a jewelry case. She puts it on and Regina imagines strangling her for betraying Donald to her mother. She snaps out of her daydream and says that she doesn't remember where she got it. Later, Regina goes to see her father and explains that Cora is making her crazy and like herself. Henry says that Cora just wants for her daughter what she never had, and explains that there was a man that gave Cora her book of spells and made her like she is. He doesn't know the man's name and Cora won't say, and Regina seizes on the fact that the book would have his name in it.

Regina goes to Gold's pawnshop and searches for Cora's book. Gold steps out and realizes what she wants, and advises that she relax and take her time. Regina says that she needs a shortcut to deal with the problem now but Gold tells her to leave, saying it isn't in his best interests to help her. She threatens to reveal that the enchanted forest still exists and that he's up to something. When Regina threatens to reveal it, Gold produces the book and gives it to her, but warns that they can be dangerous. As she walks away, Gold comments that she looks just like her mother.

When she wonders how he knows her, he explains that he knew her some time ago and was aware that this day would come and they would be together.

Regina sits in her yard beneath her apple tree, filled with rotting apples, and contemplates the book.

At home, David rehearses his speech but has nothing. Henry asks to see the hat and checks it against his storybook. He tells David that it belongs to the Mad Hatter and functions as a portal between worlds. Henry doesn't know who he is but suggests that they check at the crisis center after David gives his speech. David takes the hat and leaves, ignoring Henry's request to help.

David goes to the pawnshop where Gold is packing his bags. He tells the pawnbroker that he's there to buy a way to find someone and reminds him of the ring Gold gave him to find Snow. David refuses to give him an object that belongs to Mary-Margaret so he can track her, and Gold gives him a potion and tells him to pour it on the object. However, Gold asks for a non-interference agreement and David agrees as long as Gold does the same. As David takes the potion and starts to leave, Gold what happens at the border and he tells him that they lose the memories of their real lives. Once David leaves, Gold smashes a case in frustration as he realizes that he's still trapped.

Rumpelstiltskin recognizes her power and says that she could do a great deal if she lets herself. When Regina says that she doesn't know how, Rumpelstiltskin offers to show her magic and creates a doorway sheathed in gift paper, but Regina says that she doesn't want it because it will make her like Cora. The imp explains that he'll do the magic for Regina, and the doorway leads to a world without magic. All Regina needs to do is push her mother through.

Regina braces herself and then opens the book. Blowing upon it, she releases the same barrier spell that Cora used on her and then absorbs the magic. Above her, the rotting apples of her tree are restored.

Regina casts him back with a magic spell, throws Leroy back, and catches a crossbow bolt when Granny fires at her. Ruby asks what she wants and Henry says that Regina wants him. He steps forward and agrees to come with her if she leaves the others alone. Regina looks at him, smiling, and then takes him away.

David shows Jefferson the hat and asks if he can do anything with it. He admits that he can't and David says that he needs to get his family back. Jefferson tells him that the Enchanted Forest still exists but that he can't use the hat to get back there. David threatens to throw him in jail but Jefferson says that then they'll both suffer and runs off. As David goes after him, Ruby finds him and tells him that Regina has recovered her magic and taken Henry. David insists on getting Emma and Mary-Margaret back, but Ruby warns him that the town is coming apart and he needs to do something.

Regina takes Henry home and he immediately runs to his bedroom, ignoring her. He tosses out some knotted sheets and climbs out of his room, but the tree in the yard comes to life and grabs him. Regina looks out and tells him not to fight, and he asks how long he's imprisoned. She insists that she rescued him but Henry doesn't believe it. He points out that she ruined lives and made sure everyone wouldn't believe him. Regina promises that things will change now that he can live in a house with magic and makes a cupcake appear out of nowhere. She promises to teach him magic and let him bring friends over, but Henry warns that all of his friends won't come because they're scared. Regina offers him the power to make them love him, but Henry says that he doesn't want to be her and walks away.

Once Upon a Time

As Regina prepares for her wedding day, Cora comes in and sees Rumpelstiltskin's item. She removes the covering and discovers that it's a mirror, and shows Regina her reflection. Cora promises her daughter that her life will be better then she can imagine, and that once the king dies Regina can take over. Regina tries to push her through the mirror but Cora immobilizes her with a spell and says it isn't that easy to get rid of her. Rumpelstiltskin appears in the mirror behind Cora and gestures to Regina, who breaks free and pushes her mother into the mirror. Cora falls through and the mirror shatters as Regina stares at her hands in horror.

As the townspeople drive up to the border and prepare to leave, David blocks them with his truck and tells everyone to listen. He warns them that they will all be lost if they cross the line: lost to themselves and lost to their loved ones. David tells them that even the bad memories are part of them, and assures them that he wouldn't give up Charming to be him. However, he wouldn't give up David to be Charming because David reminds him of his strengths. All of the townspeople are both of their selves, and if they stay then every choice will be open to them. David vows that Regina won't hurt them as long as he's alive and as long as they come together like they did before and will again. The townspeople nod in agreement and go back to town.

Regina does remember that holding hard to someone doesn't make them love, and tells Henry that she wants him to be there because he wants to be. She says that she wants to redeem herself and Henry goes to get his things. David asks her to prove she wants redemption and asks if the Enchanted Forest exists. Regina admits that it does but that she has no idea how to get back there, and realizes that she's launched him on a heroic quest.
