Episode Quotes
Lucas: (voiceover) And the little prince said to the man, grownups never understand anything for themselves and it is tiresome for children to be always explaining things to them.

Lucas: He got you skipping school and drunk?
Haley: You know what Lucas, why don't you talk to me when you get your tattoo removed?

Haley: I think you're really brave to consider rethinking who you are. I don't know if I could do that.
Nathan: You could.

(Nathan and Haley are drinking on the beach)
Nathan: I have never seen you like this.
Haley: Well now you have.
Haley: Are you sure your dad isn't here?
Nathan: I told you, he's in Charlotte. Let's go inside.
Haley: One, three, five!
(Haley jumps onto Nathan's back)
Haley: Ugh. Stop moving the pier.
(Nathan climbs the stairs and sees Dan at the top)
Nathan: Nice knowing you.

Episode Goofs
In the scene with Keith, Deb and Dan at the café, it’s obvious that it’s raining outside. However, when Lucas arrives at Peyton’s house that same morning, it’s clear outside.

Cultural References
Episode Title: The Living Years

"The Living Years" is the title of Mike and the Mechanics album.

Brooke: All work and no Brooke make Luke a boring boy.

Brooke's line is a play on the line "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" from the horror film The Shining.

Lucas: (voiceover) And the little prince said to the man, grownups never understand anything for themselves and it is tiresome for children to be always explaining things to them.

Lucas is quoting a line from Antoine de Saint Exuperie's Little Saint.

Analysis
The song "The Living Years" that the episode is named after was written by Mike Rutherford and B. A. Robertson, members of Mike + The Mechanics. The idea for the song was inspired by the relationship that the writers shared with their fathers, and in this episode, Nathan and Dan's crumbling father-son relationship is one of the main themes of the episode.
