One Tree Hill: Lifetime Piling Up

While in a coma after his racing accident, Nathan has a bizarre dream about what life would be like had Dan chosen Karen over Deb. In this dream, Lucas and Nathan have polar opposite lives than what they have in reality -- Lucas grew up in a privileged world while Deb and Nathan struggled to make ends meet. Meanwhile, when Nathan wakes up he tells Haley he doesn't want her to come home and Deb continues to face her pill addiction.

Episode Quotes
Nathan: (voiceover) Douglas Adams once wrote, he felt that his whole life was some kind of dream, and he sometimes wondered who's it was, and whether they were enjoying it.

Brooke: So I guess the rumors are true, Mr. size 14!

Haley: Dude, nothing is ever gonna happen for you if you don't be yourself out there. You gotta shoot for the stars.

Peyton: You're a tutor right?
Haley: You're jackass' girlfriend right?

Nathan: Daddy teach you how to drive?
Lucas: Yeah, he sends his love. Now get out of my way, loser.

Nathan: Uh, I think you have the wrong locker room.
Brooke: Well, the sign says boys.

Skills: Nate, uh, I'm your best friend right? So I feel like I can tell you this. Stop being so damn modest and come out here so we can keep you humble.

Peyton: Why do you have to treat him like that? That could've easily been you, you know. If your dad had married his mom instead of yours.
Lucas: Like that was ever gonna happen.

Lucas: I know you asked me not to but I called Haley. She's your wife Nate and she loves you. She needed to know. (pause) Nate, I have to ask you something. When you hit the wall, there was no brake marks on the track.
Nathan: Are you asking me if I did this on purpose?

(during Nathan's dream; about Nathan and Haley)
Deb: You know you two are gonna end up married someday.
Nathan: Stop it. We've known each other forever. We're just friends.
Deb: Hmm, good place to start.
Nathan: Keep dreaming.

Haley: Nathan, I have to come home.
Nathan: No, you don't. Actually, no, it's all okay. You have to go after your dream 'cause if you don't we'll just end up regretting it. Whatever choice you're gonna make today is gonna affect the rest of your life. So, don't come home, Haley --
Haley: Nathan, listen.
Nathan: -- because I don't want you to.

Haley: You and Brooke Davis. Captain of the Cheersluts. That's hard to picture.
Nathan: Yeah, I'd say hard's the right word.

Episode Goofs
During Nathan's dream when Lucas almost runs into Nathan with his car, it is obvious that it is not Chad Michael Murray driving, but a stunt double instead.

Cultural References
Episode Title: Lifetime Piling Up

The episode title shares a title with a song by Talking Heads.

Episode References
The plot of this episode contains many of the scenes from the "Pilot" with Lucas as Nathan and Nathan as Lucas.

(during Nathan's dream)
Haley: (to Nathan after the basketball game) Don’t say I never gave you anything. (Haley gives Nathan her wedding ring)

In "Are You True", Nathan tells Haley "Don't say I never gave you anything" after he gives her a bracelet that was in his Cracker Jack's box.

Analysis
The dream that Nathan has about what could have been if his and Lucas' lives were switched is a theme that is greatly emphasized during the series. At several points in the series history, in addition to this episode, writers have used the contrast in Lucas's and Nathan's lives and posed different questions about how different things would have been if Dan never left Karen or had chosen Karen over Deb. As clearly demonstrated in this episode, the plot mirrors the plot of the "Pilot", but switches Nathan and Lucas's lives, as well as Karen and Deb's.
