Episode Quotes
Ellie: (voiceover) It’s tough to get to know Peyton. Like me, she tends to keep the world at arms length. But in those fleeting moments she has let me in I’ve seen in her, such indomitable courage and heart – a young woman anyone would be proud to call her daughter.
(while trying to convince Haley to be a cheerleader)
Brooke: What don't you do what I want for once? Come on. Fine. Oh, did I mention that Nathan is very often shirtless at practice? You know, taut, sweaty and bulging in all the right places. All the girls notice. Hmm. Okay see ya.
Brooke: I just had a great idea!
Haley: Does it involve trigonometry?
(pause)
Brooke: I don't know what that is so I doubt it.
Whitey: Damn your sperm, Danny.
Lucas: You're kidding.
Nathan: No, I'm captain.
Chris: I know things weren't always easy but if you just set that other crap aside --
Haley: That other crap was my marriage Chris!
Chris: Details, Haley.
Haley: Hey, I was hoping I’d catch you.
Nathan: Why is that?
Haley: Um, I don’t know, I think we should talk.
Nathan: About what?
Haley: About what happened the other night at the masquerade ball.
Nathan: I can’t, Whitey wants to see me before class. But it wasn’t that big of a deal, anyway.
Haley: It was to me.
Nathan: It was a nice moment Haley, but it’s over now.
Brooke: One spot on the team and there’s no one to fill it? Those, like, dance auditions are for "Crap, the Musical".
Episode References
Rachel: (to Lucas) Hey boyfriend.
Rachel greeting Lucas in this way is a reference back to Brooke greeting Lucas this way when they were dating during season 1 starting with "
You Gotta Go There to Come Back."
(to Rachel who's undressing in the back of Lucas' car)
Brooke: That's so last year, it was like, two years ago.
In "
Are You True?," Brooke hides and undresses in Lucas' car after he scores the game winning shot during his second game with the team. Like Brooke says, this happened two years ago in season 1.
Analysis
The "casualties" mentioned in the episode title can refer to several different plot points during the episode, including the fight between Brooke and Rachel during Midnight Madness, the fight between Lucas and Nathan, and the end of Dan's unopposed campaign when another candidate steps forward.
The character of Rachel introduced in this episode and Brooke's character during season 1 are very similar. Each of the characters instantly had a crush on Lucas and expressed their interest for him in the exact same way -- being naked in the back of his car. Brooke and Rachel also have very dominate personalities and both strive to be the leader of both the cheer squad and the school in general. But despite their very similar personalities, Brooke and Rachel constantly clash.
