Episode Quotes

Lucas: (opening voiceover) Do you ever wonder if we make the moments in our lives, or if the moments in our lives make us?

Lucas: (closing voiceover) If you could go back and just change one thing about your life, would you? And if you did, would that change make your life better? Or would that change ultimately break your heart? Or the heart of another? Would you choose an entirely different path? Or would you change just one thing? Just one moment -- one moment that you've always wanted back.

(while Nathan, Skills, and Mouth are finding all the alcohol in Deb's house)
Skills: Damn, Nate's mom like the alcoholic easter bunny.

(Peyton and Lucas are making out on Lucas's bed)
Peyton: Your mom is gonna come in any second.
Lucas: She's working at the cafe. Nobody's gonna walk in.
(Brooke walks in through Lucas's door)
Brooke: Okay, my discomfort meter is pretty much pegged.

Dan: The trick with formal wear is to always go classic. You don't want to be the guy twenty years from now regretting the blue ruffles.
Lucas: You're right. What did you wear to prom?
Dan: Blue ruffles.

Haley: Umm, have you guys seen Rachel?
Chase: She was holding court in the living room
Haley: Clothed or unclothed?
Brooke: Clothed, but it was about ten minutes ago, so you never know.

(to Haley as the sextape plays)
Bevin: I thought you and Nathan were married.

(Lucas is alone in a room looking at a picture of Keith)
Nathan: Luke, you gotta help me find some booze, man, or it's going to get ugly down there. You gotta let this go man. (Nathan picks up the picture of Keith) Keith's gone, Luke. Jimmy's gone. Nothing's going to bring them back. But you got a ton of people that love you out there and in a few months, most of those people are gonna go their seperate ways. So what do you say big brother? Let's have some fun.

Deb: Nathan.
Nathan: Hi.
Deb: Umm, I -- I wasn't sure you'd want to see me.
Nathan: To be honest I wasn't sure I was coming.
Deb: Oh, honey, I'm so sorry.
Nathan: Suicide? Nice one Mom. And thanks for the note, by the way
Deb: Please Nathan don't, you can't begin to understand this disease.
Nathan: Disease? Is that what you're calling it now? Peytons mom, Ellie, had a disease -- cancer. That's a disease, Mom. What you have is a weakness. And when the hell are you going to start fighting it?
Deb: I know. I know I've been weak. But I, uh, I'm scared.
Nathan: Of what? Your terrible life in that big expensive house 'cause I'm not seeing it, Mom. What are you so scared of?
Deb: Myself. It's easy in here. I have a support team to stay sober, but out there, alone, I'm not sure I can trust myself.
Nathan: Mom, you better figure it out because if things don't change soon you're not going to have anything to come home to.

Cultural References

Episode Title: Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers

Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers is the title of an album by The National.

Peyton: I know there is no tenth chapter in Great Gatsby.

The Great Gatsby is a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man longing for a woman that he had loved his entire life. As Peyton states, the book only has nine chapters.

Episode References

Peyton: Do you remember what you said the last time we were here? You said you wanted it all and I walked away. I made a big mistake that night because all I wanted was sex.

In "Life in a Glass House" at a basketball party at Dan's house, Lucas tells Peyton while they're making out that he wanted everything with Peyton, not just sex.

Analysis

It seems very out of character for Karen to agree to go to the Prom with Dan considering their past history. Though Dan has attempted to change his ways, as he's attempted several times before, his past actions have shown that he's incapable of changing his ways and Karen, who has been hurt by him more than any other character, should be suspicious of his advances. However, Karen immediately accepts without thinking twice.
