| Half-brothers Nathan and Lucas Scott have their worlds collide when Lucas joins the Tree Hill Ravens basketball team. Nathan, the cocky star of the team, saw Lucas as a threat and did all he could to chase him off of the team. Nathan and Lucas had never been close despite sharing the same father. Their father, Dan Scott, dated Lucas' mother, Karen Roe, in high school and when she got pregnant he opted to leave her and attend UNC on a basketball scholarship. However, at college Dan met Deb and she was soon pregnant as well. Possibly feeling guilty about leaving Karen for college, Dan chose to make good by Deb and together they raised Nathan in Tree Hill.
Until Lucas joined the team, he and Nathan had nothing in common. Nathan grew up in a world of popularity, riches, and basketball, while Lucas was raised by a single mother and spent most of his time playing streetball and hanging out with his best friend Haley James.
After Lucas joins the team, he quickly sets his sights on Peyton Sawyer, Nathan's girlfriend, who ultimately breaks up with him after she sees how awful he is to Lucas. But Peyton and Lucas' relationship is rocky and Lucas ends up with Peyton's best friend, Brooke Davis, despite having deep feelings for Peyton. In order to get to Lucas, Nathan goes after Haley, but he soon falls for her and she falls for him as well. Nathan and Haley's relationship puts a strain on Lucas and Haley's friendship, but Lucas sees how Nathan truly cares about Haley.
Midway through the season, Lucas' life hangs in the balance after he and his uncle Keith are in a bad car accident. Fortunately Dan witnessed the accident and was able to get Lucas to the hospital in time for surgeons to save his life. In order for the surgeons to operate on Lucas, Dan is forced to acknowledge Lucas as his son, marking a turning point in their broken father-son relationship. The accident makes Lucas realize that he doesn't want to be with Brooke and breaks up with her in order to be with Peyton. However, Brooke discovers that Lucas had been cheating on her with Peyton, destroying the once close relationship that Brooke and Peyton shared. Soon after, Brooke has a pregnancy scare that puts Lucas in Dan's shoes, but Lucas promises her that he'll be there for her and the baby no matter what. The guilt Brooke feels for lying to Lucas about the pregnancy and admits to him that there is no baby. With a relationship with Lucas no longer in the picture, Peyton finds a relationship in single father Jake Jagielski and his daughter, Jenny.
Meanwhile, Deb demands a divorce from Dan with Nathan caught in the middle. With help from Haley, Nathan looks into emancipation and ultimately is able to break free from his parents and start a life on his own. Keith and Karen's relationship suffered after Karen learned that Keith was drinking before the car accident that almost killed Lucas, but Keith decides to propose to her anyway. When Karen turns him down, Keith opts to leave Tree Hill for Charleston. Lucas decides to leave Tree Hill as well for a fresh start.
As season 1 drew to a close, Dan suffers a near-deadly heart attack after walking in on Keith and Deb having sex, while Haley decides to take her relationship with Nathan to the next level and have sex with him. After the final basketball game of the season, Lucas and Keith prepare to leave Tree Hill and is shocked to discover that Haley and Nathan did take their relationship to another level -- marriage. | |
