Initially only going to be a TV movie about modeling, the show was soon picked up after high ratings and focused on the Manhattan modeling scene. The series focused mainly on the two Taryn Blake, who has been modeling since she could walk and has the stage mother of all stage mothers, Julia who sees her more as a meal ticket than as a daughter, and Laurie Caswell, the innocent, who doesn't really want to do it but is being pestered by Racine who sees her as the next hot commodity. Because of the modeling, Laurie's parents Dinah (who herself used to be a model) and Michael who are at odds. Another focus is the company of Harper World Wide, which as a perfume company uses Racine's models for all their advertising. Wesley Harper, who is in charge of that division, is constantly having his head bitten off by his father, Grant, who treats his daughter Blair (who is one of Racine's models) as the perfect child . Therefore, Wesley grows to resent his father, and is plotting to not only have his deposed as head of the company but also ruin his marriage to his second wife, Marjorie. He also has it in for Blair's husband, David, who runs a sportswear company and steals Laurie right from under him.
