Kristina reassures Adam that giving Sarah a job was a good idea. He’s
very unsure, but Kristina manages to help him see that he has made the
right decision. She tells him that once he does his normal morning
routine (latte, muffin, etc), he’ll be fine. Adam glances out the
window and sees Suze Lessing approaching their front door. “She has
that look, ... the look like she wants something from us.” Adam tells
Kristina she’ll have to deal with Suze, and he leaves for work.
Sarah is getting ready for her first day on the job with Adam. She’s a
bit frazzled, but when the kids start questioning her about working
two jobs, she tells them it’s temporary, and it will be fine. However,
she is actually so frazzled that she leaves without her purse, which
her son, Drew, hands off to her when she runs back in.
One of Sydney’s classmates, Amy G, sets up a play date for the next
day after school by asking Julia. Julia accepts.
Crosby meets his wife and son at the airport, holding up a sign at the
bottom of the escalator. Jabbar leaps into his arms while Jasmine
smiles happily. Crosby and Jasmine exchange a long kiss and both state
that they need to talk in private, and can’t wait.
Adam and Sarah arrive at work, and he tells her she has nothing to
worry about. All she needs to do is listen and learn. This helps set
her at ease a bit. Adam introduces her to the design team, Eddie in
particular; he will be responsible for getting Sarah started.
Attempting to break the ice, Sarah brings up nepotism. “Just kidding”.
Back home, Kristina serves tea to a distraught Suze, who was having a
perfectly ordinary day until she found out her marriage is ending in
divorce. Her husband says she is obsessed with their son who she has
to spend every waking hour trying to get through the day. Kristina
insists on doing something to help, and Suze is finally convinced to
drop Noel off there after school, since she has a board meeting after
the teacher’s meeting.
Sarah is running her mouth about the ‘lame brains’ she is teaching a
thing or two, not realizing that the boss is standing right behind her
in Adam’s office. Sarah is introduced to Gordon Flynt, who seems to
accept her apology for insulting his design team. He tells her it was
nice to meet her, while giving her the once-over with his eyes.
Julia arrives back home, gives her baby a kiss and greets her husband,
who is doing a wood working project. The playdate with Amy G will have
to be cancelled, Sam announces, due to a string of play group drama he
wants to keep Sydney free from. Sydney backs him on the decision,
because if Ashley finds out, she will no longer be friends with
Sydney.
Adam comes home and finds Noel cleaning out the refrigerator. When he
asks what Noel is doing there, Kristina brings him up-to-date on the
separation. She then asks how Sarah’s first day went, and he says
fine, and that she hit it off with Gordon. They then get the kids in
the car and head over to mom & dad’s for the “Jasmine & Jabbar” family
get-together. The car trip doesn’t go well as Noel and Max have
Aspergers, and are acting out.
At the gathering, Sarah asks Adam to give her a ride to work the next
day since her car is giving her a bit of trouble. He says sure, “save
a tree”. Jasmine springs Crosby from a poker game with the kids so
they can talk. His big news is that he is ready to move to NYC so they
don’t have to do a long-distance relationship anymore. Hers is that
she’s been invited to join a European touring company, effective
immediately. They argue. She wants to leave their son with her mom,
and he disagrees because that’s his son, why would he go to her mom?
She agrees.
Adam arrives to pick up Sarah, who is running late. She brings out two
mugs of coffee, which don’t fit in the car’s cup holders. She’s trying
to talk to him about the design team while he copes with the coffee
spilling everywhere.
Julia cancels the play date with Amy G’s mom. Amy’s mom says she
understands, but it’s quite obvious that what she is thinking does not
jibe with what Julia is saying.
Gordon asks Sarah to share her lunch, as his is healthy, therefore
inedible. She then offers him her chocolate pudding. Adam arrives and
is about to join them, but Phil Lessing shows up at the office so he
goes to talk to Phil. As he is leaving, Sarah is saying “Phil has an
autistic kid too”, and Adam turns back to give her the ‘shut up’ look,
which she finally picks up on.
Jasmine’s mom comes over and tours Crosby’s living space to see how it
will work for Jabbar. It’s only one room, and she is not impressed.
Jasmine reassures her, and mom announces that Jabbar is welcome to
stay at her place if it doesn’t work out.
Phil shares with Adam his complete frustration with how much time Suze
spends on Noel. It is readily apparent that he still cares deeply for
his wife but doesn’t know how to change the status quo. Adam looks
through the window of his office into the break room and sees Sarah
and Gordon still chatting happily away. He abruptly offers to get Phil
some peppermint tea to help soothe Phil’s nerves, but doesn’t escape
fast enough - Phil hugs him. He then talks his way out of tea, through
coffee with cream and sugar, past espresso and over to cappuccino.
With soy milk.
After she leaves the break room, Gordon tells Adam “Your sister is awesome”.
Jasmine surprises Crosby by dropping in at his recording studio, and
greets him with a kiss. She then informs him that her mother feels
Jabbar would be better off staying with her. Crosby disagrees, but
Jasmine won’t tell him how she really feels. She finally says it: he’d
be better off with her mother than his father. They start arguing and
talking over each other. Jasmine walks out in a snit when Crosby
brings Julia into it.
Crosby shows up in Adam’s office, and Sarah shows up partway through
their discussion. She would have been there sooner, but she was in the
‘logo meeting’ with the design team. Crosby announces that Jasmine is
going to Europe for four weeks, and she wants Jabbar to stay with her
mom. The siblings want to put Julia on a conference call to find out
Crosby’s rights, but she’s in a “Not to be disturbed” meeting and
can’t join them.
While they are talking, Sarah mentions “put your money where your
mouth is”, i.e. get an apartment instead of having him on a boat. He
then leaps to the conclusion that Sarah and Adam don’t think Jabbar
should live with him, either. They reassure him that that is not what
they are saying; they are saying he should take some time and think
about it.
Over in Julia’s office, she’s handling a call where she feels her
comments were appropriate and justified. She is speaking to her
husband about Amy G’s mom, who, it turns out, is President of the PTA.
Joel informs her that she must fix this and pronto, or Sydney will
wind up bitter and lonely.
Adam tells Sarah he’d rather not carpool, as it’s the only time all
day he has completely to himself. She understands, and says good-bye.
He also asks her not to talk about Max, or his personal life, at work.
She agrees. He doesn’t really seem to hear her, as the conversation
continues. He winds up saying that she disrespected his privacy. As
she attempts to extricate herself and walk away from the conversation,
Adam says “And I also don’t think you should spend quite so much time
with Gordon.” He timed her! “77 minutes”. They fight, and she quits.
He calls her a quitter.
Sarah walks in, but nobody notices she’s home as her parents are
busily interacting with her children. She has a bit of a meltdown,
yells at everybody about what they need to do, and walks out. She
reverses course and apologizes, but they all ignore her some more.
Adam arrives home to a madhouse. Noel is jumping on the couch, Suze is
crying in the kitchen, and Max is acting out alone in a corner. Adam
turns around and walks back out. Kristina finds him reclined in his
driver’s seat, listening to his favorite music. She asks him if he
wants to be alone and he says no, so she joins him in the car. They
discuss how and why Sarah quit. They were making out a bit, but Suze
interrupted to ask where they keep the pasta salad, for Noel.
Crosby shows up at Jasmine’s mom house, where she, Jasmine and Jabbar
are gardening. She and Jabbar go in the house to get something to eat
so Crosby and Jasmine can speak in private. He agrees to let Jabbar
stay with his grandma until he can find an apartment. He asks Jasmine
if she’s pulling away from him and she says no; he’s really cute. They
kiss. He says it’s the motorcycle. He’s just a six, but with the
motorcycle he’s an 8. She laughs and kisses him again.
Julia told Amy G’s mom that Amy P was actually the problem, so Amy G
is over for her playdate. She figures by the time they run out of
Amys, Joel will think of something else.
Adam shows up to apologize to Sarah. He says he overreacted, and she
accepts. She said she overreacted as well, and it’s okay. Adam says
it’s really not okay. He says there’s too much pressure at work, and
he took it out on Sarah. Sarah tells him not to worry, Gordon implied
that Adam is indispensable, but Adam doesn’t believe it. Not in this
economy. Sarah tries to reassure him, but he changes the subject by
saying she’s not really quitting, so let’s go. She tries to stand her
ground, but Adam says he wants her there. She calls him on it, and he
says okay, yeah; but I’m working on it. She starts in with wanting to
change the music, needing a ride every day, etc. He tells her to hurry
up and walks out the door, throwing his arms in the air as Sarah yells
after him “You’re the best!”
Jasmine and her mom are with Crosby and Jabbar at the airport, saying
good-bye. She hugs and kisses everybody, Crosby last. He tells her to
have fun. Jabbar walks away, holding hands with his grandma and dad.
Adam arrives home to a note from Kristina telling him she’s taken the
kids out for dinner, so he should kick back. He grabs a beer and hits
the couch, turning on the game. He frowns, and the scene cuts to the
restaurant where the kids are interacting fairly well. Adam shows up
to join them, and Kristina is very happy to see him. Haddie scooches
over so Adam can sit with them.
