Amber wakes up, thanks to an early alarm. She promised Camille she'd be
her sous chef. She's the only one who listens to Camille, so the job is
hers. Camille starts going over the kitchen schedule.
Over at Renee's, Jasmine and her mom are getting food ready for the
Braverman dinner. Renee intends to bring pies, even though the list
said she's supposed to bring dressing. She is bringing dressing. She
is also bringing pies. Crosby is worried because his sister is on pie
duty, and she gets a little intense during Thanksgiving. Renee tells
him she too has a thanksgiving tradition; sweet potato pie and mincemeat
pie. Is this a problem. No it is not, Crosby answers. The more pies,
the merrier he says, as he gives her a hug.
Julia is, as Crosby predicted, freaking out over the pies. Sydney gets
a bit demanding of Julia's attention and a pie is flipped onto the
ground, shattering the dish. Both Sydney and Julia are very upset.
Julia figures Camille is going to kill her, and Joel get Sydney out of
the way.
Gordon thanks Adam for coming in on Thanksgiving. He has something to
tell Adam. He has decided to sell the company. What he means by that
is he sold it last night. Adam is livid. If it sold last night, that
means this has been in the works for months. That's why he had Adam
fire seven people, to make the company look better to the buyers.
Gordon points out that it's his company, and Adam agrees. But he's been
with the company for over 15 years, and even though he doesn't have a
stake in the company, which was his mistake, years ago, he would think
that he would be in the loop on something like this. Gordon says that's
not how it worked out. Adam wants to know if he told anybody else.
Like Sarah, for instance. Gordon answers no. It's totally
confidential, until the deal is final. He didn't want Adam to find out
on the street. He also didn't want it to be awkward at dinner,
Thanksgiving dinner; the Braverman family dinner. Sarah didn't tell
Adam Gordon was invited; he didn't know. Gordon shakes his hand and
says he hopes they can remain friends. Adams starts to leave, but
stops. He asks Gordon not to attend his family's Thanksgiving dinner.
Gordon says he's expected. Adams says he knows that. He also knows
that he's going to have to tell the entire staff on Monday morning that
the company was sold, because Gordon won't do it himself. So he would
appreciate it if he could give him this one meal with his family.
Kristina hears the news and assures Adam that they're going to be fine.
She doesn't understand why Gordon would do that. He says he's just
not going to let Gordon ruin his Thanksgiving. Haddie showed Max how to
make a spreadsheet for all the Thanksgiving games. She's in a really
good mood, and her parents have noticed. Adam jibes "five days of no
sarcasm", and Kristina asks him not to jinx it.
Sarah joins Amber and Drew at Camille's kitchen table. She hadn't yet
told anyone she invited Gordon to Thanksgiving dinner. Everybody is
visibly under-enthused. Camille says she'll shove the seating
arrangement around. Sarah prods Amber to say that she likes him, and she
does so. She'd marry him herself. Sarah goes on to tell Drew that
Gordon has really been looking forward to meeting him. Drew finds it
weird, since Gordon is Uncle Adam's boss. Sarah says he's her boss too,
and both Amber and Drew chime in "also weird", which she agrees with.
Drew joins Zeek in the garage. He had to get away from the clucking
hens. Zeek asks him a man-to-man question, completely confidential. He
tells Zeek his story with Camille, claiming it's hypothetical. Drew says
Zeek should talk to the guy. After all, he doesn't want him seducing her
with his 'bad hotel art'. Drew tells Zeek he thought that was why he
was out here. Avoiding grandma, right?
Amber is toasting marshmallows with a blowtorch when Crosby and clan
walk in. Everybody exchanges holiday greetings. Renee asks after Zeek,
and Camille says he is out in the barn, getting drunk, as usual. Crosby
sets the record straight - it's a joke. They share the pie news, and it
seems to go over OK. Renee calls for an apron, but is refused by
Camille. She even takes off her apron to prove that there's nothing
left to do.
Adam's branch of the family tree arrives. Crosby and Sarah are trying to
rearrange the table in honor of Gordon's inclusion. She doesn't want
Adam and Gordon together because they'll talk shop. He doesn't want to
sit across from Joel, because he thinks he stole the play from him.
Sarah tries to put Renee at the end of the table, but Crosby disagrees.
He wants her to have a good time, not be surrounded by a bunch of
surly teenagers. They decide Kristina is the solution to everything.
They should clone her, so she can sit next all of the difficult people.
She's like Switzerland.
Adam sees the place marker and tries to tell Sarah that he uninvited
Gordon. As he's doing so, a Porsche pulls up. Apparently Gordon decided
not to respect Adam's feelings. Sarah runs out to greet him, and they
chat for a bit. Camille can be tough, but flattery will get you
everywhere. Tell her you like her green bean casserole, and you are in.
Sarah asks Gordon why Adam would say he wasn't coming, and he blows it
off, telling her it is no big deal. He's here, and that's what matters.
They kiss, and Adam is watching from the window.
He vents to Julia, who thinks it's nice that Sarah is not alone for once
on the holidays. He offers her sparkling cider, since she and Joel are
still trying to conceive. Joel walks up and calls Crosby an idiot.
Adams says he's just trying to impress his future mother-in-law. Julia
says she thinks it's about the play, actually. Adams says they can
settle it on the football field and calls for Haddie to add them in.
Crosby tries to have words with Zeek, who he perceives to not be
listening. Zeek tells him he loves him, he'd do anything for him, he'd
even give him a kidney, but he will not let him carve the Thanksgiving
turkey. Crosby says Renee thinks he's some irresponsible kid, and he
wants to show her he can be the man of the house. Zeek tells him to get
his own house. Crosby actually offers to buy the bird from him, and
that's when Zeek realizes he is serious. He tells Crosby to put his
money away, he didn't realize it meant so much to him. He can carve
Zeek's bird. As Crosby is walking away, he throws out the fact that
Renee's going to expect a prayer, and leaves Zeek speechless.
Julia tries to add herself to the oven schedule, but Amber turns her
away. Sydney wants a squeezer, she's hungry and Max is having one, so
why can't she? Julia doesn't want her to ruin her appetite. Sydney
says it's not fair. Julia gives in, telling Camille's she has to pick
her battles.
Sarah brings Drew to the men so he can say 'hello' real quick. Gordon
shakes his hand and makes polite chitchat. Sarah notes Kristina bearing
a platter of mom's meatballs. As soon as Drew is not the center of
attention, he makes his escape. Sarah follows him, and Kristina is left
face-to-face with Gordon. They exchange pleasantries, and she tells him
she knows what happened with the company. He assumed that she would.
She hopes that he made the right decision. He thinks that he did. Adam
and Joel are talking, and Adam tells Max to share with the younger kids.
Max says sharing isn't fun, and he gets up and leaves.
Crosby arrives and Adam calls him on carving the Thanksgiving turkey.
Adam and Crosby banter about how if the head of the household cannot
carve the turkey, it falls to the eldest son. Camille interrupts to
call them to dinner, which is what Crosby was there for, in the first
place. Adam teases him about how he let his mother down. As he leaves
Adam mutters "I don't know why you're her favorite."
Zeek shows up in Drew's room, wanting to use his computer. He needs to
find a prayer. He asks Drew who he's avoiding, and it's Gordon. Zeek
thinks he seems like a nice guy. Drew says she barely even told them
that he was coming. Isn't Thanksgiving supposed to be about family? Not
who she's dating. Zeek asks if it's about Drew's dad and Drew says he
doesn't know. Maybe. Zeek apologizes for badmouthing Seth, Drew's dad.
It's not okay. He has a right to miss him, and he has a right to love
him. Zeek tells Drew that he's an extraordinary young man; there's a
depth to him that is truly remarkable for someone of his age. He'll be
there for Drew if he needs him. He asks Drew it's OK for him to
continue to ruffle his hair, and Drew says "go for it".
Zeek goes outside and makes a phone call. He winds up on voice mail, and
leaves a message for Seth. He tells him he knows they're not on the best
of terms, but he needs him to do him a favor; call his son. He misses
him, and it's Thanksgiving.
Zeek wants to say a prayer, so they stand and join hands. Amber chooses
not to stand. Zeek can't seem to stop praying once he gets started. He
asks God not to let Crosby mangle his 17-pound Butterball turkey.
Crosby can't figure out how to start cutting, and Zeek is giving him
verbal cues. He manages his first perfect cut, and dinner begins. Zeek
asks Gordon about the clicker-shoe idea. Adam tries to turn the
conversation, but Zeek keeps going. Sarah changes the subject by asking
where the Golden Turkey is. That's the MVP award for the best player in
the football game. Max yells from the kids table that Haddie for the
past two years got 87% of the votes. Gordon's phone rings, and he takes
the call. As he's leaving the room, Crosby calls after him to return
the shirt to the matador he stole it from. Adam makes a crack about the
hair gel trade association. Sarah asks everybody to knock it off.
Crosby apologizes to Renee, telling her that the Bravermans like to
weigh in. She asks him to remind her not to leave the table. Another
phone rings, and this time it's Drew's. He excuses himself from the
table as he mouths to Sarah that it's dad.
Everybody is loving Renee's pies. Crosby would like a piece of Julia's
rum raisin, because it has booze in it. Camille is surprised she
attempted it, because it's a very ambitious choice. Syd attempts to
raise another "Max" ruckus, but Julia nips it in the bud. If Sydney
wants desert, she will have pie. Drew brings his phone to the table.
Seth wants to talk to Amber. Amber says she'll call him back. Haddie
excuses herself to go down to volunteer at the food bank. Adam refuses
to give her a ride, but that's fine with Haddie. She's memorized the bus
schedule. Camille chimes in that Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the
year for the food bank. Kristina offers to pick her up when she's done.
Everybody says goodbye, and Gordon excuses himself as well. Adam says
let the man go. Adam and Gordon go back and forth, and Gordon decides to
stay and play some ball.
Sarah grills Drew about the call. Kristina fills Jasmine in on the
committed, crazy Bravermans. Zeek is completely off limits, everybody
else is fair game. They pick teams and start the game. It's a lot of
fun. Crosby looks at Joel and asks him if he's allowed to play on his
cycle. Gordon and Adam start taking their aggressions out in the game.
Max announces 35-35, last play of the game. Also, if you don't score,
it's a tie. Jasmine ran the ball outside, Gordon announces it, and Adam
gets torqued. He can't keep it in any more, and tells Sarah that Gordon
sold the company last night.
Gordon and Sarah try to talk things out. She asks why he didn't tell
her. He says deals like this fall apart all the time. If she's worried
about her job, he can get her another hundred just like it. She works
for her brother. Adam helped her. She just feels like - Gordon could
have been better. He tells her he's been thinking about it for a long
time, and it's just business. He needs to travel for a while, take some
time off. He really likes Sarah. Maybe she could meet him on the road
sometime so they can stay connected. She says she can't do that, and he
understands. He thanks are for Thanksgiving, and tells her he'll see
her later. She manages to hold back the tears until he's out the door.
Julia approaches Camille and apologizes for how she handled Sydney at
dinner. Camille understands; the holidays are nothing if not stressful.
Julia feels bad about the pies. Camille set the bar pretty high. And she
knows she probably spoils Syd but she doesn't see her much and when she
does, she just wants things to be good. Camille tells Julia she admires
her, and she's an amazing mom. She should stop beating herself up, okay?
Okay. They hug.
Zeek and Drew are out in the garage, chatting. He asks about Seth, and
Drew is very noncommital, so Zeek changes the subject to the
'almost-fight' between Adam and Gordon. They figure Adam could have
taken Gordon. If he couldn't, Zeek would have. Zeek gives Drew a beer
but tells him if he tells Sarah? He's dead. Drew promises. He takes a
drink and hates it.
Amber finds Camille in the kitchen surrounded by food and dirty dishes.
She doesn't even know where to start. Amber says she shouldn't have
to start, she did all the cooking. Camille says it doesn't work that
way. Amber says we should make it work that way, you do everything
around here. Big things, little things; and you never get thanked.
Ever. And you should be. So from me to you? Thank you. Camille thanks
her back, and Amber says for what it's worth, she knows that Pop really
appreciates it, too. Maybe he's not emotionally capable, or maybe he
just doesn't know how to articulate it, but he really does care. Amber
pours her a drink and throws Camille out of the kitchen. Camille takes
her up on it.
Alex and Haddie lock up. She thanks him for inviting her. They hug good
night ... and kiss. Kristina and Max pull up, and Kristina sees Haddie
and Alex kissing. She sees her mom seeing them kissing. Kristina asks
who he is and Haddie tells her Grandma introduced them.
Sarah asks Adam if he doesn't want to tell her he told her so. He says
no. She tells him Gordon seems pretty sure he'll keep his job. Crosby
and Julia walk in and calls Sarah and Adam brown-nosers. Sarah says
she's running for President of Thanksgiving. Crosby starts some music so
they can do their clean-up in style. Zeek walks in and asks Camille how
much longer she's going to be mad at him. She tells him she's trying so
hard not to be. They watch the kids have fun, and Zeek holds her close,
kisses her on top of her head and says at least they did something right.
