Drew's on a bus. Adam calls Sarah to see what she's up to. She's working
on her resume, but he was actually asking how things are going with
Haddie. He tells her that when she and Amber swung through to pick up
Max to take him to the Science Museum, she wouldn't even get out of the
car. That felt real good. Sarah tells him that in a way, he's been
getting away with murder (having such a good kid). Adam just says "I
miss her."
Amber wonders why they're walking this way, they could have been back to
the car ten minutes ago if they'd taken a logical route. They arrive at
a basketball court where Alex is playing. Max is overjoyed to see him,
and Amber mutters that she should have known. Haddie waves at Alex as
Max talks his ear off.
Julia and Joel are watching Jabbar so Crosby and Jasmine can go to an
"Engaged Exploration". Sort of a premarital counseling session with the
minister at Jasmine's mom's church. Crosby thinks this would be a good
time to stand up to Jasmine's mom, and not go. That won't be happening.
As they leave, Joel jokes that they wish they were going.
Drew meets his dad. Seth asks him to stand up so he can see how much
he's grown and changed. He sort of talks non-stop, like Sarah. He's
overjoyed that Drew checked out his website. He invites Drew to come see
them perform, and Drew accepts. Amber is invited as well. Does she hate
him? No.
Haddie and Alex chat while Amber and Max shoot hoops. She fills him in
on moving out. He teases her mercilessly. "You're so competitive. I had
a rough childhood, you had a rough childhood. I came up homeless, you
wanna be homeless. I'm just sayin, be original!" She asks if he's mat at
her for coming there, and she says no. He touches her hair, then returns
to the game. He helps Max make a shot. "He's a lefty! It's all in the
wrist."
Jasmine and Crosby are at their meeting. She totally answers every
question and every answer is "I do." Crosby looks puzzled. He tries
speaking his mind about their arguments, but backs down. The minister
asks about religious instruction. Crosby thinks Jabbar should find his
own path, but Jasmine says he'll go to church and Sunday school here.
The minister asks what they feel is the most important thing in their
relationship. Jasmine says honesty. Crosby says communication. It's
important to feel heard. Where do they envision their married life in
ten years? Crosby can barely see 10 days out. He has them draw a picture
of their visions. Jasmine goes to town, and Crosby doesn't know what to
draw. Jasmine's picture is them with Jabbar, a house with a garden, and
three more babies. She always wanted to have four kids. The ballet
slippers represent the dance studio she'd like to start. The money means
that they have savings.
Crosby doesn't want to show his. He's not good at drawing. The minister
says it's not about artistic aptitude. He shows the picture, and all his
is is Crosby, Jasmine and Jabbar, smiling because they're happy.
Drew tells Amber about meeting Seth. She doesn't take it well. She
remembers how bad things were when he was little. Drew saw him, he
talked to him, and he's different. Amber tries telling him he can't go
to Seth's show. Mom won't let him go. Drew says he's going to the show,
and he's not going to tell Mom. He's going to sneak out the window like
Amber always used to do. The fight escalates enough that Sarah
intercedes. Amber gives him the chance, and he tells Sarah so Amber
won't have to. She starts yelling at him, too. Zeek shows up just as
everybody scatters in tears.
Camille joins Haddie and they chat about her stay. She hasn't spoken to
her parents, but she has talked to Alex. Not that it matters. He's
standing firm. Camille advises her to go home. Haddie doesn't think
that's going to fix anything. Camille tells her that's not why you go
home. You go home because they love you. Everything doesn't have to be
solved. It doesn't work that way, anyway. You just go home.
Jasmine and her mom are looking at reception venues. Crosby looks at one
of the pamphlets, and points out that the reception is going to be at
his parents. Her mom says they won't want 150 people trampling through
their back yard. He agrees. But that's why they agreed on 40 guests. Her
mom says 40 is unrealistic. Crosby thinks 150 is unrealistic. Her mom
says his family alone is 40, then her family is big, then she has to
invite everybody from church. He backs down, but then Jasmine says "we"
changed the date. The Reverend will be out-of-town in October, so they
changed it to September. Crosby asks if there's anything else about "my"
wedding date that you guys changed, and Jasmine rolls her eyes and scoffs.
Sarah watches Seth and his band perform on the internet. She slams the
laptop shut when Zeek walks in, so he accuses her of being on porn
sites. Then he grows serious and tells her he thinks he had a hand in
this Seth thing, since he told Drew to reach out to his dad. Sarah gets
irate again. Seth should know all about the kids. He should know,
because he should be calling. He should be staying in touch. He should
be making the effort. But he hasn't. Zeek hears her say she's upset
because Seth didn't call her, and it's his turn to get irate. Sarah's
still got feelings for Seth. He starts talking, and Sarah can't even
recognize herself. Zeek says she always has to be in a relationship,
it's like she's trying to fill some space inside. Seth was a son of a
bitch. Sarah says he was the love of her life, but he's sick now, and
she knows that. Zeek reacts in anger to the "love of my life" comment,
and tells her to listen to what he said.
Max, Adam and Kristina are making ice cream. He says he has decided he
wants to play basketball. Adam says fine, they'll go shoot hoops. Max
says no. He wants to learn from Alex. He's a much better player. How
does Max know? He saw him the other day at the park. He taught Max how
to do a lay-up, and he let him win, so Max wants to play with him more
than he does with Adam and Grandpa. Adam very calmly says okay, even
though he and Kristina are screaming messages at each other with their
eyes. Adam asks if it was the day they went to the Science Museum, and
Max says yes. "But I'm not supposed to tell you, Haddie says, because
she'll get in trouble, because she's not supposed to be seeing Alex."
Sarah visits Seth, he welcomes her in. She starts right in with the
jokes, and they banter a bit. He tells her she looks great, and she says
"don't". She asks if he's using. He's been on the wagon nine months. She
is angry about Drew. He didn't know that she didn't know. He thought
Drew came and saw him with her blessing. She yells at him some more, and
he takes it. Why is he here? He got a couple of gigs. He's there for
gigs? He didn't even call her to see the kids, he's just here for gigs?
He cries. He knows he screwed up 100 times in 100 different ways, and it
probably doesn't matter that he's beyond sorry. He wants to be part of
his kids' lives. Whatever it takes. He tells her he invited Drew to come
hear him play. No surprises - it's up to her. Whatever she thinks is
right, that's what he'll do. Sarah needs time to think. She turns at the
door, smiles at him and says "If you hurt them again, I'll kill you."
Crosby fills Adam in on the counseling session. He tells him how Jasmine
either answered first, or corrected him whenever he spoke. Crosby
thought this session was just a formality, to placate her mom, but
Jasmine took the ball and ran with it. Now Crosby realizes that this
woman he is supposed to be marrying is never going to let him make a
single decision. When it comes to Jabbar, Crosby is wrong every single
time. Adam thinks Crosby is just having pre-wedding jitters, but Crosby
knows better. It's not just about Jabbar. It's about the rest of his
life. He may as well have a mute button installed. Adam tries to speak,
but Crosby stops him. He doesn't want Adam's stock answer in support of
the institution of marriage. He wants Adam's honest opinion of Jasmine.
Adam advises him to stop freaking out. He thinks Jasmine is a strong
woman with strong opinions, and Crosby can be a bit of a waffler.
Crosby says he's not Adam, but he's doing a damn good job taking care of
his responsibilities. He makes all his payments, he pays his taxes. Adam
does Crosby's taxes. Crosby says Adam does everybody's taxes, because
Adam is a control freak. Besides, Crosby pays him. "You don't pay me,
you give me mixed CD's. That's hardly legal tender." Adam points out
what each of them brings to the table and says maybe Jasmine can toughen
him up, and Crosby can soften her up. It's marriage. You gotta give a
little to get a little. Crosby gets that. But he's the only one giving.
Zeek is miffed because the kids ate his ice cream. Sarah comes in and
tells Drew he can go to the show. The deal is she'll drive him and pick
him up. Amber says she'll drive him, and that's fine with Sarah. Is she
sure? She's going to the show, and she's okay with that? Amber says yes.
Kristina and Adam tell Max he has to eat his kale before he can have the
ice cream they made. He refuses by throwing the kale off his plate and
onto the table. Adam tells him he has to have two good bites of each.
Kale, chicken and rice. Two good bites of each. Kristina says Adam's
name several times, but he continues dealing with Max. The door slams,
and it's Haddie. She's home. Grandma dropped her off. Kristina asks if
she's hungry, and she is so she joins them for dinner. Adam and Kristina
are very happy. Max explains how to make ice cream.
Crosby tries loading the dishwasher a new way, and Jasmine doesn't
believe it will work. She puts the bowls back on the bottom. Crosby says
"Yeah, that was a terrible decision. I don't know what I was thinking."
When Jasmine asks what's up, he lets her have it with both barrels. He
can't marry somebody as controlling as she is. From groceries to toilet
paper to the wedding, he hits all the bases. Crosby feels completely
lost, his ideas don't even exist. She thanks him for sharing, and offers
the ring back. She believes that if she doesn't do it, it won't get
done. It's not being controlling, it's being responsible. He asks if she
intends to drop the other three kids in his lap like she did Jabbar.
Jasmine finally stops yelling, but for a brief moment. He calls her
ungrateful, she goes ballistic, and he leaves.
Drew enjoys the concert, but Amber makes smart remarks. Seth announces a
song that he wrote with Sarah. It's about the kids. Drew enjoys it,
while Amber tries to hang onto her armor.
Kristina and Adam have a sit-down chat with Haddie. First off, they're
glad she's home. Now. When she goes out with Alex, they need to know
where she is at all times. No sneaking around, no mystery dating, and
she's only allowed to go out with him twice a week. Also, schoolwork has
to come first. Her curfew will be non-negotiable, and she cannot go to
his apartment at all. She agrees on all the points. Group hug.
Amber and Drew go backstage. Drew hugs him, but Amber refuses. They meet
the group. His manager says he hasn't seen them since they were babies,
and Amber cracks at Seth "Neither has he." Amber says it's time to go,
so they go. Seth thanks her for coming, it meant a lot to him.
Zeek and Sarah are watching John Wayne while they wait for the kids to
get home. Drew loved it, Amber talks it down. Before Drew goes to bed,
he thanks Sarah for letting him go. Sarah gets all misty and leans into
Zeek for dad cuddles.
Adam makes pancakes. He's very proud of his pancake skills. Max rejects
Adam some more, and tells Haddie to call Alex so he can teach him to
play basketball.
Crosby wakes up on his boat.
The family arrives at the basketball court. Alex and Kristina fist bump,
and they all take to the court. Max makes a basket! High fives all around.
