Haddie and Alex are intimate.
Amber is smoking a joint, and her work buddy Gary is happy to see she
found some tic-tacs to take the edge off the munchies. He's showing her
how to play golf.
Adam and Kristina are going over the grocery list in the car after
they've already finished shopping. She's agitated because she thinks
Adam forgot Haddie's favorite waffles, but he's kidding. The phone
rings. It sounds like an obscene phone call, but no. Haddie accidentally
butt dialed them "during." Kristina thinks she's playing a joke on them.
They almost run a red light because they're freaking out so hard.
In the kitchen, they're both too stunned to put the groceries away.
They're hoping that maybe what they heard was "everything but." Haddie
arrives home in a wonderful mood. Adam asks tons of questions, trying to
get her to be honest about where she's been.
Crosby and Joel work on his house. Crosby is too busy fretting about
what needs to be done to admire what has already been accomplished. He
wants the wainscoting ripped out. Julia arrives with bakery goods and
coffee. Joel wants to know what their time frame is, and they're running
into a money problem. Crosby says he'll sell his motorcycle. When he
goes out to unload the sod, Joel and Julia chat for a moment. He's
feeling a bit rode hard and put up wet, but he points the door out to
Julia and grins when she admires it.
Sarah and Gilliam go over her script. He tells her they're going to a
fundraising party, and Jack Kraft is going to be there. He's read the
play and he likes it. He trained under Gilliam, he owes his whole career
to him. So there's a slot at New Voices, and he wants Sarah's play in
that slot.
Adam talks to his staff at work. His boss sort of hangs above the ground
next level up. Cory says it looks like a picture, which it is. But it
looks like an ad. Yes. It is. Cory asks Adam to hold that thought. He
wants his friend Spider to make the copy itself into the image of the
shoe. Cory introduces himself to the arts department, Kim and Karen.
Julia finds Amber wearing huge shades and asleep at work. Julia yelps
OMG you REEK! and hauls her off to her office. Amber acts like it's no
big. She's not going to college, so she doesn't need money, so she
doesn't have to be here - so she quits. She talks her way straight out
of the building. It's humiliating; she humiliates herself and Julia.
Kristina arrives for a mother-daughter chat. She asks if Haddie and Alex
are having sex, and Haddie lies. She's very uncomfortable. Haddie asks
why Kristina is asking. Did she have sex when she was Haddie's age?
Kristina says she was 22, and it was a big step. The conversation ends,
and she reiterates that she'll be there for Haddie.
Sarah and Amber talk over, around and through each other. Sarah follows
her everywhere she goes. She's very angry at Amber for what transpired
in the office. Amber was talking in the moment back there, but that's
what a child does. If she wants to be treated like an adult, she needs
to act like one. They need to figure out what the next year brings. In
fact, Sarah warns "And don't say no to me", they need to have pasta.
Amber says they'll eat the pasta, and they'll figure it out.
Work continues on Crosby's house. Joel brought home kitchen tiles, and
Crosby finds fault with the color. Joel finally sets him straight. He
needs to show Jasmine his place, and find out if she accepts the big
gesture.
Haddie tells Kristina the truth, and she is rendered speechless. She
tells Haddie that she and Adam had a feeling. Haddie is humiliated that
Adam knows. Kristina asks if 1) she was pressured, and 2) if she's using
protection, not just condoms. "And." Haddie asks how they knew and
Kristina says they had a feeling. Parental intuition. Haddie walks out.
Gilliam, Sarah and Zeek arrive. He hails Jack, who looks over but stays
put. Zeek goes over and introduces himself before aiming Jack at
Gilliam. He claims he's busy but Zack tells him that wasn't actually a
request. He advises him to remember where he got his start. Jack and
Sarah are introduced, and Jack remains uncomfortable and unamused.
Gilliam tells him about the play and asks him to read it. He refuses,
and Gilliam puts his pride on hold. "Jack, don't blow her off because of
me." Jack tells Gilliam "You're forgetting that you told Sam Shepherd
that I was incompetent." Sarah is aghast. Gilliam tries to play it but
he admits it, but also says that at that point, Jack was incompetent.
And now he's not. Jack tells Sarah and Zeek to have a great evening, and
walks away.
Sarah follows him. She asks him to read the play. Not his army of
readers. Him. She pushes hard, and he capitulates.
Kristina tells Adam she had the chat with Haddie. He looks like somebody
just punched him in the gut. He shuts down mid-conversation and goes to bed.
Cory calls Adam in to see the design. He likes Karen's mockup even
better. Cory tells him he hired Spider. Great. Cool. Did he tell Eddie?
Because Eddie is the head of the design department. No. He forgot. Can
Adam tell him? Sure, no problem. After Adam leaves, Spider tells Cory
that he thought he said Spider was going to be the head.
Sydney and Jabbar happily greet each other and head off to playtime.
Before Jasmine can leave, Julia asks her about Crosby. She tries not to
overstep her bounds, but she tells Jasmine that Crosby is different.
Grownup, all of a sudden. Just thought she'd mention it. Jasmine says
she's glad for him, but he should have done it a few weeks back. She
loves him, but she's so angry at him, she doesn't think she'll ever not
be angry at him. It's not going to happen. So now Julia knows.
At family dinner, Adam is pretty walled-off. Haddie scored three times
in one soccer match, and he acts like it was nothing. Max winds up
singing her praises, after he gets done giving all his chicken facts.
Gary and Amber get sexual in Julia's office. She forgot she was having
dinner with her mom and goes tearing off. Gary gives her a ride. She
tells Sarah some big story about being in the wrong place, etc. Sarah
notices she's laughing too hard and starts putting things together.
"What kind of high are you." Amber blows her off, but Sarah knows it's
not just pot. She gives Amber two minutes to meet her at the car.
Adam gets home as Haddie gets out of the shower. She tells him the
shower head is leaking again. He remains cold, and Haddie winds up in
tears in her room. Haddie wishes she hadn't told Kristina. Now Adam
never looks at her without judging her. It hurts. Kristina says they're
not judging her, they just wish she'd waited. Adam will adjust.
They hug, and Kristina admits she lied. She wasn't 22. She was 15, and
it was awful. She thought she loved this boy named Roy, but he went to
school the next morning and told everybody that they did it. She's happy
that it was different for Haddie.
Julia tells Crosby she talked to Jasmine, and she's not on the same page
as him. He knows that. It's a long shot. But it might just work. He has
to believe it might work. So please. Just let Crosby believe this time?
It will work.
Kristina tells Adam that he needs to start talking to her. He's shutting
her out, completely and it's not okay. He walks away again.
Sarah goes through Amber's stuff and questions Drew. Amber's phone
rings, and Drew answers, telling Gary that Amber doesn't need a ride.
She arrives, and all hell breaks loose when Amber realizes they are
going through her purse. She calls Sarah an idiot. Sarah tries to stop
her, and Amber shoves her to the ground. Amber gets in the car, and Gary
drives off.
Sarah leaves another voice mail on Amber's phone number. Gilliam
arrives, but now's not good. He starts to leave, but tells her that Mr.
Kraft liked her play. They are in.
Sarah tells Adam about what happened with Gary and Amber. She's afraid
Amber won't come back. Adam tries to say how horrible this year with
Haddie has been. He says they're having sex, and Sarah still thinks it's
no big. She tells Adam he's got it easy by comparison. Adam and Sarah
come to a realization about being there for your kids when they say they
don't need you anymore.
Adam goes to Haddie's soccer practice. Her elbow is bleeding, so he
grabs the first aid kit and treats it like she's his baby girl. He tells
her he just doesn't ever want her to get hurt. That's all. They're gonna
go for ice cream. Maybe a movie.
Amber is whining about her mother as she and Gary drive down the road,
getting wasted. Maybe they can go to Europe together. Their car gets
t-boned on the passenger side.
