The Way Through - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
The prisoners attempt to evade the surveillance cameras and dig a tunnel out of town, only to come up against an underground wall. Air raid sirens go off and the metal opens to reveal a series of vents that emit gas. They retreat but Janet collapses and Joe goes back to get her out.

The prisoners gather back at the Shanghai Palace to lament their failure after a week of effort. The rest seem resigned to their fate, but Janet snaps angrily at them and Joe calms her down. Moira suggests that maybe they've all been wrong to try and escape, and that what they need to do is build a signal fire. The others agree and start assembling burning materials.

At the tabloid offices, Kat talks to Mark, who admits that he's gone back to Janet's disappearance story and thinks he can play it up as child abuse. She tells him to find the sleaze on the case or he's off of it.

As the prisoners collect a pile of burnable objects, Bill comes onto Victoria and she easily knocks him to the floor. Later, Bill complains to Charlie about Victoria's behavior, and suggests that the others can't be trusted. As Charlie goes into a store, Bill notices a nearby TV showing an image of Charlie smothering a woman in her bed. When Charlie comes back, Bill jumps nervously and notices that the picture on the TV has disappeared.

The prisoners try to light the fire, only to discover that everything has been doused with flame retardant. They notice a helicopter overhead and try to get its attention. It comes lower, but then drops a large metal box on the street and flies away. The prisoners approach the box, which opens on its own. Inside are seven boxes, but only three of them contain gas masks. The others are empty.

Everyone goes back to the hotel and Graham suggests they partner up. He gives his mask to Moira, and Janet tries to take Charlie's mask, insisting she has to live for her daughter's sake. Charlie objects, insisting that he has a bedridden wife who needs his help and wonders if she would give him her mask if she had one. As Janet hesitates, the Night Manager comes out during the day and explains that he's been promoted. He doesn't have a gas mask, but offers Bill a complimentary umbrella. The others go to find something to protect themselves, and Moira offers to help.

Renbe returns to his apartment and discovers that Edick has trashed the place and is waiting for him, armed and ready. Edick tells him that his superiors want Renbe dead, but that he told them that Renbe would listen to reason. He then beats Renbe and takes his laptop as well as his photos on Janet. After kicking the reporter one last time, Edick tells him to make sure he doesn't have to find him again and leaves.

Bill goes to Charlie's room and barges in. He claims that he had a dream where Charlie smothered him. As Charlie remembers smothering his wife and crying, he tells Bill that he has no idea what he's talking about. Bill persists in describing what would happen if someone was smothered and Charlie walks away.

As Graham and Moira search the stores, the soldier describes how he became a devout Muslim after his time as a military policeman at a terrorist holding prison, and the horrors he saw there. Moira asks him to teach her some clarity. Meanwhile, Janet is passing a store when she thinks she hears something and goes inside. She finds Charlie taking bottles of soda. As they talk, air raid sirens go off and the doors seal themselves. Charlie dons the mask and panics as gas starts to flood the room. She tries to break her way through the window without success and collapses. The door finally opens and Charlie pulls her out onto the street, only to discover there's no gas outside.

Back at the hotel, Janet rants at the cameras. Graham notes that she was lucky to survive without any ill effects, and that their captors might use invisible toxic gas against them. When Moira wonders what they can do, Janet snaps at her and Charlie. Graham suggests they use rain gear and paint masks to protect themselves, but the others aren't impressed at the chances of success.

Later, Moira goes to the Shanghai Palace and finds a piano. As she starts playing, Graham comes in ad sits next to her. She explains that she learned how to play at the psychiatric hospital. She ended up having to pretend to be insane to stay there, and convinced herself she was. Graham asks her to play some more.

Renbe finds Edick's office and breaks in. He finds photos of him with Victoria's father, as well as files on Janet and emails from Eleanor and Janet asking for information on Janet's husband. There's also a phone number from someone who paid Edick $10,000. The reporter calls the number and hears strange electronic static on the line. He hangs up, but his cell phone rings and the same noise comes from the caller. Renbe grabs his stolen laptop and quickly leaves.

Bill goes to the sheriff's office and goes through some boxes. Charlie finds him and explains that his wife was dying of cancer for years, and his money wouldn't help him. Bill asks why he smothered his wife, and says that he saw it on the television screen. Charlie insists he did it to relieve her pain and Bill tells him not to sweat it.

Janet is at the soda store eating ice cream when Joe comes in. He talks about how his father would take him for ice cream after each Little League game and then document all of his mistakes. Janet points out that at least Joe's father was there for him, and her husband abandoned Megan. As she looks around, Janet notices that all of the posters of children on the walls are of Megan. She runs back to the hotel and demands a gas mask, threatening them with a bottle. Joe grabs her and tells her to look in the mirror and realize what their captors are doing to her. He manages to calm her down.

The next morning, Janet comes down and apologizes to the others. Graham warns that things are only going to get worse as their captors try to break them down psychologically. The sirens go off again and the Night Manager slips away. The doors lock and gas fills the room. Moira, Victoria, and Charlie don their masks, and Bill attacks Charlie and yanks off his mask. Graham attacks him and tries to pull off the mask, and Joe realizes that the gas isn't tonic. However, the gas masks start to fill with poison gas, and Bill, Moira, and Victoria are unable to get the masks off because they're glued on. The others finally manage to pry them off.

Later, Graham is kneeling toward Mecca and Moira comes out and sits next to him.

Bill is walking down the street when he notices Charlie nearby. He tries to apologize and Charlie isn't impressed. Bill points out that he can tell if Charlie is lying, even if Charlie doesn't know it. As he walks away, Charlie realizes that he isn't a car salesman and Bill agrees.

Joe comes over to talk to Janet, who wonders what they can do now. He suggests that all they can do is ride out whatever is happening to them until the end. Janet disagrees, saying that they have to disregard their emotions and persist until the end. The Night Manager arrives with a bowl full of fortune cookies and wishes them good luck. Janet dumps the fortune cookies in the garbage and insists they'll have to make their own luck. She leaves and Joe goes after her.

Edick comes to see Lt. Gomez and says he can solve Janet's disappearance. He explains that her husband works less than five miles away from the police station, and leaves him a photo of Janet's husband: Mark Renbe.
