And Then There Was One - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Ulrich watches over Janet as she sleeps, and considers kissing her. Joe grabs him and hauls him into the hallway, but Ulrich insists he can't hurt Janet and that it wasn't supposed to happen to him or Joe. Joe realizes that he's no longer committed to the Program. Ulrich goes to his office and the Director calls. She assures him that she understands his obsession with Janet, and informs him that it has damaged the experiment. Ulrich realizes she's redcarded the entire town, and the Director gives him one more chance to maintain his role. He thanks her, and she tells him he'll know what he has to do when he succeeds or fails.

The next morning, the captives discover that the elevator isn't working and the furniture in the lobby has disappeared. They go outside and find Ulrich sitting on a bench near the edge of town. Janet calls them over to the restaurant where they discover that the staff has disappeared and the food is gone. They go to the other buildings and discover that everything has been cleaned out as well. Erika finds six body bags in the sheriff's station and insists that she won't go into one of them again. Joe explains that only one of them will get out alive.

Janet goes to see Ulrich, who explains that they will all kill each other and only one person will survive. He tries to walk away, but Janet insists there's more to him than the Program. Ulrich says that there is Janet, and she should be the last person standing as the Program predicts. When she insists that she won't leave without the others, Ulrich says that she'll do whatever it takes, and that's why she'll be the last survivor.

Janet then goes to see Joe, who explains he was the last survivor of the experiment he was in, or thought he was until it turned out that Ulrich was alive. He warns that they are all being manipulated into thinking they have free will, but are being lead to their deaths. When Janet wonders if that is why they have feelings for each other, Joe insists that is free will. However, he warns that they won't let him leave and she should take Ulrich's offer so she can get back to her life.

In San Francisco, Renbe takes Kat to San Francisco to meet with his friend, Sherman Golightly, a medical examiner. Golightly has identified the remaining thumb as belonging to a living person.

Ulrich goes to his office and tells the Director he wants to initiate the exit sequence. However, she informs him that he won't be returning to his previous duties. When he tries to plead his case, she cuts him off. Ulrich then assembles the others and leads them to the edge of town. He activates a hidden control in a billboard to shut down the pain barrier, but tells the others to stay behind. Ulrich walks through, unaffected, but Bill goes after him and the pain barrier reactivates. He collapses and Ulrich realizes he's failed. The Director activates a control and Ulrich's head explodes. Janet warns them that Ulrich predicted that they would kill each other off, and Joe confirms that's what happened in his experiment.

Janet takes Joe and Moira to Ulrich's office and shows them the monitor system. Janet notices Erika move out of a camera range for a few seconds and gets an idea.

In San Diego, Kit and Renbe go to see the survivor, Dr. Daniel Gilman. He claims he has no idea how he got to the hospital. The last he remembers, he was in San Nicasio helping villagers during a mudslide. Gilman claims he has no idea what they're talking about when they saw his body in South America. He says that the hospital changed his life, and since he can't be a surgeon they've hired him to work in their cancer-research program, and he has a vocation as part of something even greater.

The captives gather in Ulrich's office and realize that there must be others there. Graham says they have to stay together and Erika insists she'll stay with Graham. When Moira objects, Graham agrees with Erika and says that what he has with Moira won't work in the real world. He tells her to stay with Charlie. Bill realizes that he's left alone and tells Charlie he's going to do whatever it takes to protect himself.

Kat and Renbe go to an Internet café and she checks to see who sponsors the hospital. The donation records show that the Mansfield Institute is one of the contributors. Renbe realizes that they also own the new Register.

Janet is checking the monitors when Erika comes in. They watch Bill on the monitors, crying in the bank vault, and Erika says she wished Janet wanted to learn more about her. She kisses Janet, who gently pushes her away. Janet realizes that Moira has disappeared on the monitors, and then spots someone beating Bill to death in the vault. They gather the gather the others and run to the bank, but the vault door is locked and there's no sign of Bill. Charlie arrives last and they assume that he killed Bill. When he realizes Bill is dead, he blames the others for not giving his friend a chance and runs off to his room where he hides under a blanket.

In Mansfield, Iowa, Kat and Renbe go on a tour of the Institute's building. The dossette gives them the standard information, but Renbe and Kat start yelling accusations. When they refuse to stop, the dossette has the security guards take them outside. The Director and Night Manager watch and the Director notes that no one else has gotten so close.

At the restaurant, Charlie complains to Moira about how they're being tricked into killing each other. Erika comes in and calls him a coward, and Charlie strangles her. Moira pulls him off, but Charlie clutches at his arm and then falls to the ground, dead of a heart attack. Erika tries to revive him without success. They examine Charlie's body and find injection marks, and realize that someone poisoned him.

At the bar, Janet and Joe consider their few remaining food supplies while Erika drinks heavily. She leaves to comfort Moira, and rebuffs Janet when she tries to stop her. Erika finds Moira at the bar, playing the piano. She notices that Joe's body is missing, and asks Moira where it went. Moira responds by brutally attacking her, slamming her head piano, knocking her to the ground, and then slamming the door on her until she's dead. When the others arrive, Moira says that Erika killed Charlie and Bill. When Janet, Joe, and Graham don't believe her, she runs out the back to the hotel. They follow and go into her room, which is entirely covered in scribblings.

Graham finds Moira outside on the balcony, threatening to jump. He convinces her to come down and hugs her, saying that he loves her and will protect her no matter what. Moira responds by shoving him over the balcony, and then prying his fingers loose as he holds on. Graham falls to his death and Moira goes inside. She finds Janet and attacks her. After a struggle, Janet manages to grab a fire extinguisher and chokes Moira to death with the rubber hose.

Janet goes down to the lobby and Joe finds her. Red lights flash and sirens go off. They go out into the street and watch as an electronic pillar emerges from a manhole cover.

As Renbe and Kat drive away, Renbe realizes that they weren't arrested because they have nothing left. Kat tells him that she'll help him no matter what.

Joe checks and discovers that all of the bodies have disappeared. They go to the sheriff's station and discover that there is only one body bag left. They go back to the restaurant and Joe calms Janet down, saying that he'll stay there with her. He takes a drink from Erika's abandoned bottle and then offers it to her. Once Janet drinks from it, Joe spits out his mouthful as Janet starts to choke. She collapses as Joe tells her that the Program is his vocation, and he couldn't choose her because they'd never allow it.

Joe gets a body bag and places Janet in it. After giving her one last kiss, he takes her to a waiting van and dumps her corpse in the back with the other five. Once it leaves, the Director arrives to congratulate him, and admits he's proven that he's worth saving. The Night Manager tasers him unconscious.

As the van drives out of town, Janet opens her bag from the inside. She frees the others, and it becomes clear that they faked their deaths, taking advantage of the limited camera angles. They attack the van driver, who loses control. The van goes off the road, flipping over repeatedly.
