Episode Notes
Ash earns his 1st Badge, the Boulder Badge
Brock joins Misty and Ash in their travels
This is the first badge Ash earned without really defeating the gym leader
Who's that Pokémon: Onix
Brock's lineup at the beginning of his journey: Geodude and Onix.
This episode is the first appearance of Brock. At the end, Brock decides to come along with Ash on his journey.
Gym Line-ups:
Ash: Pidgeotto, Pikachu.
Brock: Geodude, Onix.
In the original version, Brock's mom deserted him and his family. 4Kids changed this to her dying so that Brock wouldn't have two dead-beat parents. However, she will appear in a Season 9 episode and a Chronicles episode.
Pokémon Debuts: Geodude, Onix
The design for the Pokémon League poster incorporates the energy type symbols (Water, Fire, Fighting, Grass, Psychic, Lightning and Colorless) from the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Ash has his first Gym Battle and his first loss.
Pikachu uses Thunderbolt for the first time.
Character Debuts: Flint, Forrest, Brock's siblings
Misty is willing to lend her Water-type Pokémon to Ash for the battle but he refuses.
This is the first of few episodes where Team Rocket appears but has no bearing on the plot.
This episode introduced the most named, recurring characters in the entire anime. However, given that it introduced Brock's siblings, it has an unfair advantage over other episodes. If Gary's cheerleaders had ever been named, the honor would go to the first episode.
This is the only episode since the first episode where Ash tries to return Pikachu to its Poké Ball.

Episode Quotes
Brock is leaving his father in charge of the kids in his family now that he's back. He hands him a needle and thread.)
Brock: Suzy always rips her dresses so you'd better learn how to sew, and Timmy only eats cold spaghetti for breakfast. Tommy only likes corn flakes for dinner.
Flint: Slow down! Slow down! I can't write that fast!
Brock: Cindy sleepwalks, so you have to tie a bell to her wrist. The twins never want to take a bath..
Ash: Ooh, that Flint! Trying to make a fool out of me!
Misty: Do you have any idea what you're up against? Gym leaders are different from your everyday Pokémon Trainer. They're much, much tougher. I'll tell you what, Ash. If you ask me really nicely, I'll help you out.
Ash: I don't need any help.
Misty: Is that so? Fine with me! See if you win against Brock in the Pewter City Gym! (she leaves)
Ash: (sees the check at their table) Hey, you can't leave me with the bill! Come back here!
Cindy: You leave Onix alone, you big bully!
Ash: Believe me, I'm no bully.
Brock: Stop it! Get off, all of you! We need to finish this match!
Suzy: But Brock, we know how much you love your Pokemon!
Tommy: That's why we can't watch Onix suffer another attack!
Brock: The Pikachu again? I feel sorry for it being raised by such a weak trainer.
Flint: By the way, that'll be a $2 charge for resting on my rock.
Flint: Everyone loses sometimes.
Ash: But I didn't just lose, I stunk!
Misty: Stubborn. He'd be better off if he used some of mine too.
Ash: (to Flint) You're the good for nothing father who left home and never came back?
Brock: I don't want to hurt your Pokemon.
Episode Goofs
Ash tells Flint that he's trying to become a Pokémon trainer, but he's already a Pokémon trainer and trying to become a Pokémon master.
Starting with this episode, and continuing in SEVERAL episodes, the show makes an error in comparing rock and ground types. In this episode, it is mentioned multiple times that ROCK types are resistant to electric attacks, when in fact, only GROUND types are. Although in this episode Geodude and Onix are also ground types and should be resistant, in future episodes like "Attack of the Prehistoric Pokemon" where there is no ground type status Pikachu should easily be able to shock them.
Flint said the river was dry, but there was clearly water there, albeit not very much.
In Dub, Flint charges a $2 fee for sitting on his rocks, or 50 ¥ in the Japanese version.
Various pieces of text were changed to English:
The unreadable (due to the position of the camera) signs at Flint's shop were changed to "SALE".
The poster in the Pokémon center was translated, emulating the font and style of the letters exactly.
The restaurant bill was changed from ¥1150 to $1150. The bottom of the bill is changed from "Restaraunt Nibi" to "Thank You".
The "Nibi Gym" sign was changed to say "Pewter Gym".
The sign outside Flint's house changed from "We have rocks" to "ROCKS FOR SALE".
Cultural References
Brock's brothers' and sisters' grabbing Ash to stop him attacking Onix is a parody of a scene in Fushigi Yuugi (Mysterious Play), where Tamahome's brothers' and sisters' grabbing Suboshi to stop him attacking Tamahome.
This parody was used because in the Japanese version Tamahome and Brock have the same voice actor.
