Pop Idol is a reality TV talent contest which was created by 19 Management to discover the countries next big popstar. Auditions are held across the country with the chosen few put into the next round. Once the judges have whittled down the hopefuls to just 50 the public vote take over and it decides who stays and who goes each week. The winner of the series is rewarded with a million pound recording contract.
The show's format has been sold all over the world. The show is hosted by Ant and Dec.
Simon Cowell,
Pete Waterman,
Nicki Chapman and
Neil Fox are the judges who appear on the show each week.
Simon Cowell is also a judge on the American version of the show called
American Idol. Series one was won by
Will Young while the second series was won by
Michelle McManus. Both singers have gone on to have number one hits in the United Kingdom record charts. Highlights from both series have been released on DVD.
