Pop Idol airs for the first time. Singers from around all around the United Kingdom audition to become Britain's new Pop Idol. The show is hosted by Ant and Dec. The judges are Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman, Nikki Chapman and Dr Neil Fox. Ant and Dec explain that all singers must be between the ages of 16 and 25.
The first auditions are from London, Manchester and Glasgow. One of the first auditions shown is a girl performing YMCA, who has the judges in stitches of laughter. The judges are then amazed when Gareth Gates who suffers from a stutter sings. All the judges agree he must go through to the next round.
Another star but for all the wrong reasons is the hilarious 'Sexual' Sharman whose reaction at getting rejected is amazing. By the end of the first show there are many more performers rejected for their bad performances. Throughout the show Ant and Dec talk to the successful and the unlucky less successful singers. By the end of the first show there are more hopes dashed for many performers.
