  Season 1 (A Star Is Born)  
Pop Idol first hit the scenes on October 5, 2001 and was hosted by Ant and Dec. The series set out to discover the United Kingdom's next new Pop Idol. The lucky series winner is rewarded with a million pound record contract.

Auditions were held all over the country and included some dreadful performances which had the judges in stitches of laughter. Once the auditions were over the judges then had to whittle down the successful candidates to just 50.

From this stage onwards the public decided who progressed each week. The final 50 were split into five heats with the two performers gaining the most votes from each heat progressing to the live finals.

The final 10 had to perform live each week with one being eliminated each week. When Rik Waller was forced to withdraw due to illness Darius Danesh was recalled to replace him. Each week the finalists had to sing songs based on a different theme or genre.

The final saw bookies favourite Gareth Gates competing against Will Young. Will Young emerged as the unlikely winner and his debut single went straight to number one in the United Kingdom record charts. Following the final Gareth was signed up by the same record label as Will.
