Pilot - Recap

The pilot of Pretty Little Liars open up with four girls hanging out in a finished basement laughing. There is a storm and the electric goes out. The door opens by itself and they are scared. They go to see what is going on and a girl pops out of nowhere. They talk about the new Beyonce video. They are all drinking and soon they all fall asleep. One girl wakes up and wakes up a friend. They ask where Aly and Spencer are. Spencer comes in says that she is gone. She thinks she heard a scream.

They flash to one year later and Aria is standing in front of a mirror. Her mother comes in and asks if she is okay and she says that it is just weird to be home again. Aly is still missing and the rest of the girls are pretty much estranged. These girls are Aria, Hannah, Spencer, and Emily. They all have some pretty deep secrets. Aria tells her mother that it is the anniversary of her disappearance. Her mother convinces her to call the girls and Aria offers to take her brother to lacrosse. Her father asks if everything is okay. She says that she is still keeping his secret and he says he meant if it is okay with Allison. Aria drops her brother off and checks the time and it is 4:15pm. She goes to call her friends, but then changes her mind. She goes to the bar and asks for a cheeseburger.

She notices a picture of Aly's missing poster. There is a man there that asks if she is okay and she says that she is jet lagged because she just got back from Europe. She asks if he goes to Hollis and he says that he just graduated and got his first teaching job. They bond over favorite songs and he asks what her major is. She says she is leaning towards English and he says that that is what he is teaching. She says she likes writing but it is mostly personal. He said that he tried writing, but didn't get very far. He wants to read what she is writing. He also would like to know more about her. They end up in the bathroom making out after that. The other girls are shopping at the mall and looking for sunglasses and scarves. The blonde sees Spencer and she goes to talk to her. Spencer is interning for the governor and has everything going for her.

They can't believe that it has been a year. Spencer says she thinks that she thinks their secrets didn't keep them closer like Aly said they would. Spencer is looking for an outfit to wear for a family dinner where she is about to meet her future brother in law. The blonde walks off with the glasses and the guy behind the counter realizes she stole them. A security guard runs up and says that she forgot her bag. The other girl comes up and thought she was busted. Aria is being dropped off at school by her father and he tells her that he loves her and her mom. She asks if he does really love her mother and he tells her that he made a mistake. He says he will be sorry about it for the rest of his life and hopes she can forgive him.

Aria has a flashback of a girl following Aria and Alyson. They see her father's car and her father is making out with a student it seems. Emily runs up to her and says she should have called, but they lost test. Emily says "it is awful, we all know she's dead" and Aria is caught off guard because she's never heard anyone say it. They go to class and Emily says she hears the new teacher is really hot. Hannah comes in and she is the it girl now. Mona is hanging out with Hanna, Hannah is the blond that stole the glasses and Mona is the friend that stole the scarf at the mall. Aria realizes that they all fell out of touch with one another. Spencer comes in and Emily says that Spencer isn't close with her either. Mr. Fitz turns around and it turns out to be the man she hooked up with at the bar. He is shocked by this, of course.

Aria gets an anonymous text that says "Maybe he fools around with students all of the time. A lot of teachers do. Just ask your dad.-A". She thinks it may be from Alyson. Emily is at home talking to her mother about how she can't believe Alyson's parents sold their home. There is a girl named Jenna who is blind and she showed up at Aly's funeral. They were pretty sure that Alyson and Jenna were not even remotely friends so they are caught off guard by her being there. There are other secrets going around, too. Emily seems to be a lesbian that is in the closet, Aria has maybe slept with her English teacher (or at least made out of with him!), Hannah has sticky fingers, and Spencer really digs her sister's fiancee. They all want to hide their secrets.

Spencer is pretty shady, however. When she came back saying that she can't find Aly she was acting weird in a way that one wouldn't act when thinking their friend is missing. It wasn't acknowledged that she might have been with their missing friend, however. Emily brings a gift basket to the neighbors that moved into Alyson's house. She meets a girl named Maya and Maya is really interested in getting to know her. This is where she and Maya go to her bedroom and smoke some weed. Spencer is elsewhere and has turned her barn into a loft. She wants to move in for junior year, but her sister is demanding that she wants to instead. This is when she meets her sister's boyfriend Wren and they really seem to dig one another.

Aria goes to talk to her English teacher and says she believes it could still happen between them. He tells her that while he thinks she is amazing, he can't. Emily and Maya walk home from school and they seem a bit closer than they should be. Emily has a boyfriend, so this isn't good. Emily gets a note at her locker that says "Hey Emily! I've been replaced. You've found another friend to kiss!-A". Spencer is at home dealing with some serious hormones. She runs into her future brother in law and they are both a bit clad for swimming purposes. She is really attracted to him and he might be into her, too. She starts to say her back is sore and he gives her an offer she can't resist--a massage.

She is into it and then her sister shows up. This is when she gets a text that says "Poor Spencer. Always wants Melissa's boyfriends. But remember, if you kiss I tell.-A". Finally, Hannah gets a message after she has been arrested for stealing those sunglasses in the beginning. She gets a text that says "Be careful, Hanna. I hear prison food makes you fat.-A". Her mother promises to get her out of trouble and then sleeps with the detective to get her out. They are all convinced that Alison is going to reappear, but that is when her body is found. That is when they have that funeral where they notice the blind girl Jenna. After the funeral, a detective shows up and he is determined to find out the truth. That is when everyone gets a text message that says "I'm still here, bitches, and I know everything.-A".
