A Kiss Before Lying - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
The scene opens with Hannah’s boyfriend arriving at Spencer’s place, and he reveals that he has a backup of the video on Alison’s murder. However, Hannah has to be kept in the dark about this. As he plays the video, and scans it for the important bits to be enlarged, Hannah calls on Aria’s phone. She ignores. When it’s her boyfriend’s turn, he ignores too. However, when Spencer’s phone rings next, she cannot do this anymore. When she answers, Hannah hopes she is free to catch a movie. She cannot reveal who she is with, but Emily breaks a glass and Aria shouts out her name in a detesting tone. It doesn’t take long for Hannah to realize they are doing something behind her back.

As the video they play gets decoded for better resolution, they find Alison’s ID card – but with a different picture on it, which sets them wondering. When they are leaving, Spencer hopes Aria will stay. However, she has plans with Holden. Didn’t she say they were just hanging out. Yes she did, but now they are becoming good friends. However, Spencer is still unable to get over parting with Toby, and she breaks into tears. And besides, she is confused about keeping Hannah in the dark about the video her boyfriend is decoding. Aria consoles her saying there are things about which one has to lie to friends. When she is out with Ezra, she tells him lying to parents is one thing, but she is not okay with lying to her friends. Ezra thought her mom was okay about them being a couple. Aria can’t say that yet, and with her dad, it’s like waiting for a glacier to melt. Meanwhile, Hannah is playing with her food, visibly upset as she tells her mom her friends have been annoying lately. Besides, she does not feel up to having Kate over at their place. However, her mom coaxes her into promising to do all she can to make her feel welcome. Aria and Holden hop into Ezra’s car.

When Ezra leaves to pick up cash from the ATM, she and Holden quickly decide on the lies they have to tell their parents – on what they had at the restaurant, etcetera. And when Ezra hops back into his car, the first question he asks is what they had for dinner. The next day, Hannah pryingly wants to know where her friends were last night. They tell her they went to Spencer’s for help in Chemistry. Just as they take their seats during break, in comes Kate, and she turns out to be a sweet girl, calmly turned out, who hopes to be friends with all of Hannah’s mates. Spencer thinks she has seen her somewhere before, and Kate replies, yes, it was at the wedding.

Spencer’s silent, but not convinced. When the group leaves for their class, and Spencer’s the last one to get up, Hannah wants to know why they are keeping her out. She already suspects they are lying. She knows they are upset about she having spoiled the flash drive, but they can’t just shut her out.
Later that night, Emily makes out with her partner Maya. When Emily lets on her mom is arriving the next day, Maya hopes it won’t be as bad as before. Emily explains her mother has changed a lot lately, and she never had a problem with Maya. She only had a problem with Emily liking girls. But she is cool with it now. The next day at school, Kate faces a semi-circular bevy of the four friends sitting across the table at lunch break. Of all the girls, Spencer proves to be the most grueling – as she keeps asking about her family, and where she has been. Before long, Kate leaves sweetly, saying she should introduce herself to the new teacher.

Emily has a surprise on her locker – her mom is back, and she wants Emily to call ‘someone special’ to the dinner she has arranged. Realizing her mom is actually cool with Maya now, they hug. At the locker room before games, Spencer and Kate share a revelation. Kate is the girl who had problems at their previous school – so fine, Spencer wins. But Kate suggests Spencer better keep that to herself – what will it take? Money? Emily’s mom takes her and Maya to dinner, where Emily discovers Maya sharing something with Nolan. Maya never knew until now Nolan isn’t exactly sweet. While their mother hopes for a pleasant reunion, Maya is being casual, and somewhat to the disapproval of Emily’s mother. Then Maya lets on she was dating a guy earlier, which makes even Emily upset. Meanwhile, Aria and Holden are out at their teen hangout. Aria lets on her plans are cancelled, and Holden is in a similar situations as well.

They have enough time to kill, and they get on with games and cola soda. Hannah is at Spencer’s place, and she shows her an interesting picture. However, it doesn’t take long for Hannah to scroll through and stumble upon the ID card picture taken out from the video. Spencer knows the cat is out of the bag, and after she admits to have hidden the truth, Hannah leaves banging the door on the way. Meanwhile, Ezra learns from one of the senior collagues that Aria’s dad has recommended him for an assistant dean’s position – just to keep him away from her. Hannah sits at her porch, feeling betrayed, when her boyfriend arrives. He tries to explain he wanted to protect her. However, she is in a dicey position. Her mom had stolen money from the bank when they were broke, and now A is threating to expose her if Hannah’s boyfriend keeps fiddling with the video. Her boyfriend thanks her for trusting her, and goes to Jenna’s place for telling her to stop threatening Hannah. Before long, Garrett arrives in a police car, and makes it clear whose side he is taking. Jenna isn’t going to be afraid of Hannah’s boyfriend.

Later, when Hannah and Spencer reconcile, Hannah lets on she has seen Alison with black hair some time back. After all it could be that it is her on the ID. It was when they bumped into each other at a salon, and Alison had talked about assuming a new identity because she was bored with herself. And no, it wasn’t one of the Alison weirdnesses. And the name she was using on the ID had something to do with a lottery ticket. Spencer takes it out from the Lolita paperback which she stole from Alison. Spencer was just curious why she always carried it with her. The claims has not been made yet, and the ticket seems to still be on.

The next morning, as Emily drops by at Maya’s place on the way to school. She cannot get over Maya dating a guy, and she doesn’t want Maya dating anyone but her. Maya has a surprise for her – a lovingly decorated bedroom, which is her way of saying sorry for the way she came across at dinner. Emily is impressed, and they make out. At school, Spencer checks out with the lottery office over phone, and she learns the fake name Alison was using. Meanwhile, Hannah is in the locker section, when Nolan passes by saying she made her day. Before long, her friends are laying in on her for doing what she apparently did. Someone has sent Kate’s nude picture to everyone on Hannah’s address book. And everyone obviously thinks Hannah did it. Meanwhile, someone wearing a glove is taking out a gun from a drawer at Spencer’s place. The episode ends.
