Playing God - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Naomi's ex husband, Sam, found out that Addison, his girlfriend, had told Naomi about the two of them dating and he was a bit shocked, taken aback. When he questioned Addison about it, she confessed that she had. Was he upset about it? He said he was, that he felt the two of them should have told Naomi together, but that he was glad it was done.
Naomi thought about it some, decided that in her heart, she was ready to move on with her life, but that she did feel the two of them had been sneaking about and should have been upfront and truthful with her about it. She took some time to write out a long letter to Addison, who had been and still was her best friend, to express her real, true feelings. When Addison came into Naomi's office on some minor matter, Naomi worked up enough courage, even though she was Addison's boss, to read her the letter, highlighting the fact that she should always tell the truth. Sam had revealed to Addison why he had quit doing surgery twelve years ago: he had let a murderer, for whose heart surgery Sam was responsible, die on the operating table. He didn't feel competent enough to do any more surgery, just consulting and teaching in the future. Naomi had confessed to Addison that that was the beginning of the end of Sam and Naomi's marriage and that she had never really known why he'd given up on surgery and on them. Addison had told her what Sam had told her and now that she understood, for Addison to take good care of Sam, that Sam needed Addison more than ever. Naomi revealed that Sam was a very stubborn man, sometimes not even knowing that he really needed his woman's support and concern. Addison promised to listen to Sam, to offer her support and she and Naomi parted still best friends, though stinging a mite.

A man burst into the hospital, saying that he needed to talk to Sam. Sam was enraged when he saw the man's face. Apparently this man had been the drunk driver who hit Sam's friend one night, killing his friend and almost killing Sam's daughter. Sam's daughter had recovered but Sam was still furious with him. Sam leapt at the man, choking him severely, knocking him to the ground. The blow hit the man's head on the ground hard enough to cause brain damage. 911 was called and later, EKGs revealed that the man had sustained severe brain damage. He later died on the operating table of heart failure.

Amelia (from Grey's Anatomy) appeared on the show tonight, proffering her talents and abilities as a neurosurgeon to Naomi. Naomi asked her if someone had prompted her to approach her thus and Amy vehemently denied any such thing! Amy persisted in selling herself to Naomi and was taken on on an interim basis per her performance. Amy was agreeable to that. Naomi, knowing Amy's past reputation, would watch her with a jaundiced close eye.

Violet and her husband were dining at Lucas' house. Lucas was a doctor that Violet's husband had worked with during their Doctors with out Borders junket. Lucas was running a clinic out of his house, serving immigrants, most of whom had no green cards. Violet warned her husband that something might possibly happen to a patient there and to be very careful, even to not help Lucas. Her husband pooh poohed her worries and was called to the clinic by Lucas one night concerning a bleeding teenage girl brought there by her gang banger boyfriend. Lucas revealed, upon close questioning by his friend, that he had been taking money given to him by the gang bangers for operations. The young woman began to bleed profusely whilst the doctors tried in vain to stop it. Finally, Violet's husband called an ambulance which whisked the girl off to the hospital. Violet's husband angrily told Lucas that if he ever tried to operate at his home again, that he would turn him into the police himself and left.

Charlotte and Cooper took a stroll whilst sipping on lattes, meanwhile discussing that they needed to move into a bigger place. Charlotte stated that Cooper's place was far too small, that it conjured up some bad memories dating from the start of their rocky relationship. That evening, Charlotte was cajoled into a love session with Cooper who said he only wanted her to be happy and that he had made an appointment with a realtor the next afternoon to look at some new houses. Charlotte agreed to go and they ended their day quite happily.

That night, Sam was in bed when Addison came in. She tried to kiss him, but he turned away, claiming to be tired. She wanted to talk about the incident that morning involving the man who had driven into Sam's friend, killing him, but Sam turned away again, saying that he did not feel like talking about it. She tried once more to show him some affection, but he became a bit annoyed, and got up out of bed to go stand outside on the balcony and think about the day's events. He was trying to reconcile his memories of twelve years ago, of the failed surgery, about the fact that he had deliberately let a murderer die when he could have easily saved him. Sam decided that the past was the past and that he could not change it, no matter what he might do now. He returned to bed, to Addison, and apologized for his abrupt, rude behavior, kissing her goodnight.

Naomi was coping with the fact that she still loved Sam, that their marriage probably failed because of his self imposed secrecy, but that she had done everything within her power to make it work, to just let it go. Naomi was glad that Sam had a good woman in Addison and she felt that Addison would do the right thing by Sam.
