Pete reads positive reviews of Vi's book to her from the papers. Vi is
all happy and excited until she starts finding the bad reviews. Some
shrink who writes for The Times said that Vi lacks all boundaries. She's
not just a reviewer, she's a shrink. Marla Tompkins. Pete points out
that she's giving the one bad review all the weight.
Sam finds Addison with her head in the toilet. She's not well. She does
manage to say she's mad at him about whatever's going on with Naomi. He
assures her again that nothing happened with Naomi, and asks if he can
get her anything. She says no, she'll see Sam at work.
Pete works on a patient who can't believe she's not only cancer-free,
but pain-free, after all this time. He tells her she had a good
oncologist, and a better pain specialist. Also, her great cheering squad
doesn't hurt. The man is her husband, and the woman is her sister, and
surrogate mother to their baby. Her sudden pain might mean she's going
into labor. Pete goes to get their OB, just in case, and Lorraine goes
out to the car to get the Lamaze pillow, also just in case.
Pete's looking for Naomi, but nobody's seen her. Addison looks like
hell, and chugs Pepto. Pete asks her to do the consult, and she agrees.
Sheldon refers to what that "petty little psuedo-shrink" wrote in the
Times, and Vi asks if he thinks she lacks boundaries. Everybody looks
very uncomfortable, and nobody answers. Vi says she doesn't lack
boundaries. Charlotte tells her she shouldn't give the woman any weight.
If everybody else loved her book, screw that woman. Sam says exactly.
Does Vi want him to quote her what they wrote about his book? Poor
Cooper says that the review isn't entirely wrong, and Vi snaps at him.
At least she's putting herself out there. What has he ever done?
Pete walk in on Elliott kissing his sister-in-law, Claudine. Addison
puts them at ease, because she doesn't know that they aren't a couple.
Pete makes the introductions, and now Addison knows what she actually
walked in on.
Coop is examing a wrestler, Tyler, who passed out during a match. The
coach won't let him wrestle, so he practiced with his dad and felt dizzy
after that, too. His dad is all excited about the place being packed
with scouts. Tyler is shooting for a full sports scholarship. His dad
points out that he's been wrestling for years with no problems. He's a
healthy kid. Coop detected a heart murmur, so wants their cardiac
specialist, Dr. Bennett, to take a look at him. The parents try to get
Coop to sign off on him, but he refuses until Dr. Bennett gives him the
all-clear.
Pete tries to understand what's going on with Elliott and Claudine. He
fills Pete in on how his marriage to Lorraine was crumbling, and then
the cancer came on. Claudine understands him. They grew really close
while they were caring for Lorraine. Pete tells him Lorraine deserves
the truth. Elliott says after the baby is born, he's going to leave
Lorraine to be with Claudine.
Charlotte asks Coop what that was about, in the kitchen. Is he mad at
Violet? Jealous of Violet? Everybody is doing something special, except
for Coop. Charlotte advises him to grow up. He turns and walks away.
Amelia tells Addison she looks like crap. What's the matter with her.
Addison says she doesn't know, she just doesn't feel well. She's
exhausted, she feels nauseous. Maybe it's a delayed reaction to stress.
She thinks Addison may be pregnant. Addison's period is late. She may
very well be pregnant. Auntie Amelia. She likes the sound of it. Addison
tells her it would take a miracle for her to be pregnant. Amelia tells
her she needs to pee on a stick. After Amelia leaves, Addison smiles.
Cooper consults with Sam. It doesn't look good for Tyler, but it's not
horrible. He can still wrestle, but there is an issue with his heart.
It's a calculated risk. Sam thinks they should sign off on the release.
Pete vents at Addison about Elliott and Claudine. She says there may be
more to their relationship than Pete realizes. This doesn't seem to be
some insignificant fling. They are taking a huge risk, because they
found each other and fell in love. She sort of thinks it's brave, what
they want to do. Pete thinks this is like Addison and Sam, but she
disagrees because they told Naomi. Okay, Pete says. Who's going to tell
Lorraine?
Addison tells Claudine she's only dilated to 3. She's going to call her
OB, but Claudine says her OB is gone all week, and she doesn't know the
replacement. Can't Addison do this? She also asks her to call Lorraine,
and Addison refuses. Claudine can't do it, she can't tell her. Addison
thinks she has a right to know. Claudine points out that obviously she
loves Lorraine so much that she'd do anything for her. She's having her
baby. Ever since they were little, Lorraine wanted to be a mom. She
knew. Claudine never did. She only wanted to fall in love. Which is
probably why it never happened for her. And then there was Elliott.
At first, he was just her big sister's boyfriend, and she really
resented him for taking Lorraine away from her. But once Lorraine got
sick, and they really got to know each other, something happened.
Something amazing. And the more they fought it, the harder it got.
Addison interrupts. Claudine has pregnancy hormones, they're all over
the place. If this is real, and she can't choose who she fell in love
with, that's understandable. But she can choose to be honest.
Coop tells Tyler he can't let him take the risk. The family is stunned.
What are the odds that something bad is going to happen to Tyler? 10-1,
100-1? Coop says he can't give them the odds. Tyler knows he's fine, and
his parents agree. Randy says they'll get a second opinion. Coop says
he's saying Tyler could die, what about that does Randy not understand?
He takes his family out of the consult, and they leave.
Coop's getting ready to go home, and Tyler knocks at his door. He tells
Coop that his mom got laid off, and his dad is working double shifts. He
works part-time on the weekends. Coop says he understands, but Tyler
tells him he doesn't. He's the only one in his family with the
opportunity to go to college. He's going to be just like his folks if he
can't go to college. Coop says Tyler doesn't know that, and Tyler
retorts just like Coop doesn't know if something bad will happen to him
if he wrestles tomorrow. Coop tells him he can't see, because he's too
close to the situation, and Tyler tells him to stop telling him things,
and just help him.
Coop says he made an MRI appointment for him tomorrow, and Tyler calls
him on it. Coop's scared to take a risk. Tyler isn't. What's Coop so
afraid of? Tyler walks out.
Amelia finds Addison with a drink in her hand, but it's ginger ale. Pete
proposes a toast to Vi. They all clink glasses. Vi mutters at Coop, and
Pete takes her aside for a chat. All of her friends are there, her book
is coming out - and she's sulking. It's just not right. Vi second
guesses herself. Pete tries to work with her. If her methods work, then
they work. She's accomplished a lot. She's earned this. Don't let anyone
ruin it for her.
Sam tells Sheldon to stop leering at the beautiful blond and go talk to
her. He doesn't want to be one in a crowd, but he does have a weakness
for tall blonds. She takes the decision out of Sheldon's hands by
walking over and introducing herself. It's the bad reviewer, Marla
Tompkins. Vi looks over and sees them talking. She was at a lecture he
gave, and she takes a shot at it. Sheldon asks if she's interested in
anything besides tearing people down. Marla says she's interested in all
sorts of things, and the sparks fly. Vi and Pete thank Sheldon for
having Vi's back. It made her night.
Sam's worried about Addison, she's been sick for two days now. He wants
her to go home and get better. He puts together the symptoms, but she
tells him he's wrong. She gets a page to go check on Claudine.
Charlotte finds Coop online, he's looking at advancing his education.
She tries to tease him, but it's too important to him to joke about.
The baby is in distress, and so is Claudine. Elliott strokes her face
and says "It's going to be okay, baby." Lorraine views the interaction
and realizes there's something she doesn't know. Elliott starts to
answer, but Pete says he doesn't think now is the time. As they wheel
Claudine out, she tells Elliott to tell her "we're sorry."
The baby is born, and Claudine's pressure is dropping. There's a tear.
She's bleeding. Suction. Her uterine artery is lacerated.
Randy arrives for Tyler's MRI. Stacy and Tyler should have been there by
now. Sam, Randy and Coop realize that Tyler is at wrestling finals.
Sheldon and Marla chat over drinks. They hit it off, but he still
doesn't like what she wrote about Violet. She's wrong about her. Marla
disagrees.
Pete and Addison tell Claudine that she's been through an emergency
hysterectomy. Claudine suddenly decides she does want to be a mom, and
her only chance to do so was the baby she just had. She wants to keep
it. Elliott says that with all due respect, and regardless of Claudine's
promise to Lorraine, they can't stop them from keeping this baby. He
wants to see his child.
Sam and Coop arrive to try to stop the match. Stacy faked a signature on
the consent form. Tyler wins his match. Coop thinks he overreacted, but
Sam says no. He made the right decision. They're leaving when they hear
a thump and Randy calling for Coop. Tyler's on the ground. No pulse,
he's in cardiac arrest. Sam and Coop work on him.
They got his heart going again, but he was without oxygen for an
extended period of time. Coop tells Randy and Stacy that he's in a
medically-induced coma, to give his brain time to recover. They don't
know if he's going to be okay. All they can do now is wait. Randy wants
nothing to do with his wife. She says Tyler asked her to do this for
him, and she did. Coop tells them that blaming each other is not going
to help Tyler.
Pete breaks the news to Lorraine. Claudine and Elliott want to keep the
baby. He tells her to take a deep breath, pull herself together, and
fight. She says she has nothing left, but he disagrees. She needs to
believe she'll be a good mother. Parenthood is a fight. She has to be
willing to go through whatever she has to, for her daughter.
Sheldon asks Coop if he can date Marla. Coop says no. Not and remain
Violet's friend.
Addison brings the baby in to see Claudine. She tells her that the
nursery won't let Lorraine hold her. Claudine sticks to her guns. She
wants to keep Elliott and the baby. Addison reminds Claudine that she
wanted love, and Lorraine wanted to be a mom, and she said she'd help
her, but. She's interrupted by Elliott's arrival. Addison goes ahead. If
Claudine is asking her. She can have Elliott, or she can have the baby,
but she can't have both.
Lorraine arrives, flanked by Addison and Pete. They were packing,
intending to leave without ever talking to Lorraine. Elliott is
insistent on leaving his wife with nothing, but Claudine can't do it.
She knows the baby isn't hers. She wasn't her idea, and she wasn't meant
to be her daughter. She's Lorraine's daughter. Claudine hands the baby
over, and Pete tells Lorraine she's going to be a great mother.
Coop stops at Tyler's bedside. Stacy shows him a letter from UCLA. They
had already decided to take him, before the finals. He didn't even have
to compete. A full scholarship, the first in their family. Randy
arrives, and Coop heads out.
Amelia waits to hear the test results. Looks like it's just the flu.
Coop arrives and Charlotte gives him emotional support. Nobody is better
at helping people than he is.
Sheldon arrives at Marla's hotel room. She lets him in without a word.
Vi beats herself up with Marla's words. Pete stops her. He's tired of
hearing Marla's words. She's a brave, honest woman, wife and mother.
They kiss.
Addison tells Sam she's not pregnant. They talked about this. She says
yes, he said he needed more time, and she said she'd give it to him. But
how long. Three months, six months; a year? Sam says he can't quantify,
but then how will he know? He says he'll know when he knows. She thinks
when people say they need more time, it means they're not committed. She
made up her mind, she wants a child. So she needs to know, from Sam: Is
he in, or is he out.
