| Gus often uses his keen nose, nicknamed the "super-smeller," to find clues and to deduce information. In the episode "Spellingg Bee," he was able to smell the sulfur that poisoned Spellmaster Cavanaugh. In "Woman Seeking Dead Husband: Smokers Okay, No Pets," he figured out that someone was in the house he and Shawn visited by the smell of laundry. In "Who Ya Gonna Call?" the scent of alcohol after the car crash told him the driver had been drinking. |
| Pineapples have been referenced in many of the episodes. The obsession started in the first episode, when James Roday improvised a line about cutting up a pineapple for the road. Steve Franks decided to keep the line, and since then, pineapples have either been mentioned or shown in many of the episodes to follow. |
