Ned, played by Lee Pace

Ned has the ability to bring people back to life, but there are two catches: if he touches them again, they die and he cannot bring them back, and if he doesn't touch them again within a minute of resurrecting them, they stay alive but someone in proximity will die instead. Ned's abilities work on plants and animals, although typically if something new dies when the old thing is kept alive, it is something of roughly equivalent mass and classification. if a pigeon dies, another bird is more likely to die then a human being. When Chuck was brought back permanently, another human died rather than flies, lice, bacteria, etc.

If Ned brings back a human being, they don't heal from their obvious death wounds if any, but they (somehow) appear to otherwise function normally, at least for their minute of alloted time. When he touches fruits and leaves, they are brought back to their normal condition in life.

When Ned touches someone they are effectively ageless: Digby has lived 20 years since his resurrection. Someone who has been brought back can be injured (Chuck sprains her ankle in "Girth"), suggesting that a "brought back" person can be killed through injury. Second season narration seems t confirm this, implying Chuck is in danger of dying on at least two occasions.

When Ned inadvertently caused the second and permanent death of his mother, his father sent him to boarding school and started a new family. Ned spent the rest of his childhood years without a family and is very insecure as a result. Any happiness he's found is brief, so he's learned to do without it, or at least be very leery when it shows up. After touching his mother and bringing about her permanent death, Ned is also leery of touching anyone, and his best friend is his resurrected dog Digby... who he has to pet with a stick or a wooden hand.

Ned is leery of romantic involvement, particularly after a traumatic experience where he made love to a woman on a bear skin rug. A dead bear skin rug. That came back to life. Some scars (and claws) run deep.

Charlotte "Chuck" Charles, played by Anna Friel

Chuck was Ned's childhood crush. They played once as children, a date that Ned has never forgotten. After her father's death and her mother's (seeming) abandonment, Chuck was raised in the care of her two eccentric aunts. Since they had retired from the world of synchronized swimming and spent their lives isolated in their house, Chuck had a sheltered upbringing and her best friends were the bees that she raised.

As an adult, Chuck decided to go out and see the world. She signed up for an ocean trip but was murdered. Ned brought her back to life to find her murderer, and couldn’t bring himself to let her die again. As a result, they cannot touch (or she will die again permanently), despite their romantic feelings for each other.

Chuck is an irrepressible romantic at heart, seeing the good in everyone. Thrilled at (literally) having a second chance at life, she chafes at having to remain out of the public sight (since she’s believed to be dead) but basically accepts her new life for what it is. At least until she discovered that Ned was indirectly responsible for her father’s death, it was clear she loved him and as more than a friend.

Despite her innate goodness, Chuck can give as good as she gets if someone comes after her. She’ll often stand up for Ned even when he won’t.

Emerson Cod, played by Chi McBride

Emerson Cod is a private investigator who discovered Ned's secret while chasing after a suspect that died, was brought back to life, and killed again. He and Ned work together to collect rewards offered for information in murder investigations by asking the victims who killed them using Ned's ability.

Emerson is a knitting enthusiast and has a strong interest in pop-up books. Possessed of a sardonic wit and a keen intellect, he’s capable of solving crimes even without Ned’s assistance: it just takes a little longer. Whether it’s feigned or real, Emerson’s driving interest seems to be money. He talks of it often and promotes himself shamelessly to get new clients.

Despite his gruffness, he’s protective of Ned and doesn’t believe anything good will come of his relationship with “Dead Girl” (Chuck). He’s as cynical as Chuck is open-hearted, and the two work well together despite their differences.

Olive Snook, played by Kristin Chenoweth

Olive is a waitress at the Pie Hole and Ned's neighbor. She likes Ned and hopes for more in their relationship, despite Ned's reluctance. She’s also fond of Ned’s dog Digby, possibly seeing it as a way to get to Ned.

Little is known of Olive’s past life, other then that she was a championship jockey and an avid synchronized swimming fan. She can be warm-hearted and giving, willing to help keep Chuck’s secret (even if she isn’t quite sure what it is), but can be a little short-sighted. Unlike Chuck, she’s a cynic and isn’t afraid to get in someone’s face.

Lily Charles, played by Swoosie Kurtz

Lily is Chuck's aunt and one half of the Darling Mermaid Darlings duo with her sister, Vivian. She and her sister live together in a house they do not leave because of their shared social anxieties. Lily has an eye patch, having lost an eye after an unfortunate cat litter incident. She is deeply cynical and isolated, unlike her more outgoing sister Vivian, but is starting to come around under the influence of Chuck’s secretly-administered mood-enhancing drugs.

Vivian Charles, played by Ellen Greene (1)

Vivian is Chuck's aunt and one half of the Darling Mermaid Darlings duo with her sister, Lily. She and her sister live together in a house they do not leave because of their shared social anxieties. Vivian does not enjoy being touched. Of the two aunts, Vivian is the more outgoing and friendly, and a talented singer to boot. She was beginning to weary of their isolated life even before Chuck secretly started giving them mood-altering drugs.
