Twenty-three-year-old Jimmy Chance tries to do the right thing by saving a beautiful girl from her boyfriend. She's so grateful that she spends the night with him in his van. The next morning, however, Jimmy and his family discover that she's actually a wanted serial killer. Virginia, Jimmy's mother, knocks her out with the television set and turns her in. She gets convicted, sent to prison, and leaves him with a baby to raise. Now Jimmy has to learn that it's not so easy being a father

Jimmy needs to find a babysitter for Hope. Sabrina, the girl he has a crush on, recommends her cousin, not knowing that Jimmy and her had hooked up a couple of years ago. Meanwhile, Burt tries to get Virginia to quit smoking. She says that if he can get Maw Maw to quit, then so will she.

Jimmy discovers that his parents have been lying to him his whole life. He slowly starts to discover the truth, and unearths the biggest secret of all, one even his mother didn't know. Meanwhile, the prison sends over a box containing some of Lucy's items and Jimmy must decide if he wants to keep them so that Hope at least has something to remember her mother by.

However, when trying to turn Burt's past around the rest of the family ends up in a bind of their own and must pull together to straighten things out with the law.

Instead of sleeping in and ordering pizza, per his normal Thanksgiving custom, Jimmy invites Hope's other grandparents, Dale and Margine, to join the Chances for a more traditional holiday dinner. The Chances soon realize that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree when Dale and Margine kidnap Hope, and it's up to them to get her back.

When Jimmy was a kid, every year Burt would get the season's hottest toy and sell them off for money, leaving Jimmy disappointed and without the coolest toys. This year, Burt lets Jimmy in on his scheme, but Jimmy makes him promise to save one toy for Hope. Meanwhile, Virginia signs up the family to participate in the church's living nativity scene in order to gain respect from the church members.

In an effort to keep the peace, Jimmy and his friend arrange a dinner at the Chance house.

When the National Invention Convention Extravaganza comes to town, Virginia encourages the family to submit their own inventions that could bring home a large cash prize. Burt teams with the family's neighbor Andrew (guest star Ethan Suplee) and invents unusually flavored yogurts, while Jimmy partners with Sabrina to develop a new baby mop. When convention day arrives the competition between each team escalates as they pitch their inventions to Andrew Dice Clay. During the competition, the family ends up realizing family and friends are what matter the most.

In a series of flashbacks, Jimmy and Frank look back at their unhappy high school years as Young Jimmy and Young Frank. But when the two try to take down their old nemesis, they're surprised to learn that the bully has changed.

Meanwhile, Jimmy is transported into a cinematic dreamlike state and experiences the world as though he never met Hope's serial killer mom Lucy. But when he returns to reality, he soon realizes that life without Hope would not be nearly as sweet.

After Hope shows promising signs of being a baby genius, Jimmy becomes inspired to go back to school and prepare for the G.E.D. exam. But Jimmy is surprised to find his former high school teacher, Mr. Swift, instructing the G.E.D. class, and continuing to give Jimmy a hard time in the classroom. Meanwhile, Burt and Virginia worry that Jimmy could become the smartest family member if he passed the test, so they decide to take the G.E.D exam too. But they soon realize they'll need all the extra tutoring they can get.
