Twenty-three-year-old Jimmy Chance tries to do the right thing by saving a beautiful girl from her boyfriend. She's so grateful that she spends the night with him in his van. The next morning, however, Jimmy and his family discover that she's actually a wanted serial killer. Virginia, Jimmy's mother, knocks her out with the television set and turns her in. She gets convicted, sent to prison, and leaves him with a baby to raise. Now Jimmy has to learn that it's not so easy being a father

Jimmy needs to find a babysitter for Hope. Sabrina, the girl he has a crush on, recommends her cousin, not knowing that Jimmy and her had hooked up a couple of years ago. Meanwhile, Burt tries to get Virginia to quit smoking. She says that if he can get Maw Maw to quit, then so will she.

When Hope finds herself trapped in the greenhouse out back, thanks to Jimmy teaching her to crawl, Burt being distracted by the lottery numbers on tv, and Virginia being a hoarder, they turn to Maw Maw and her excellent Jenga skills for help.

When Sabrina comes over to Shrinky Dink she finds a family photo album. Virginia interrupts them and decides to tell Sabrina why they don't have any good family photos.

Jimmy volunteers to be Sabrina's date for a Halloween party when she learns that Wyatt, her boyfriend, won't be able to make it. Meanwhile, Burt comes clean to Jimmy about the "scary guy in a mask", and Virginia takes Maw Maw trick-or-treating.

Jimmy discovers that his parents have been lying to him his whole life. He slowly starts to discover the truth, and unearths the biggest secret of all, one even his mother didn't know. Meanwhile, the prison sends over a box containing some of Lucy's items and Jimmy must decide if he wants to keep them so that Hope at least has something to remember her mother by.

When Hope catches a cold, Virginia goes into panic mode because the family doesn't have health insurance, so she locks Maw Maw in her bedroom to avoid getting sick. However, when Jimmy realizes that he can't afford to take Hope to a doctor without insurance, he figures out a way to secure a second job at the grocery store where Sabrina works.

When Hope starts imitating the dogs at her day care, Jimmy decides to enroll her in an expensive, high-end center. But the blemish on Burt's record needs to be expunged before Hope has any chance of getting accepted. However, when trying to turn Burt's past around the rest of the family ends up in a bind of their own and must pull together to straighten things out with the law.
