The title of this episode is a take on a 1935 movie, The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo, which starred Joan Bennett and Ronald Colman; and an 1892 popular song "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo," which was written by Fred Gilbert. | This episode is a nod to an actual event. In 1875, British engineer Joseph Hobson Jagger won a large sum of money over the course of three days after a careful study of numbers that came up most frequently on Monte Carlo roulette wheels. He bet the numbers that came up most frequently based on his study, and won (even after two prolonged losing streaks) over two million francs (or about $325,000). |
