Sam wakes up to find a vessel box lying next to him on the bed. He tosses it into the dirty clothes and takes off with Sock for work. However, he starts picking up static electricity and starts worrying his newfound career. As they drive to work, the box appears in their back seat. They try to leave it in the woods and run away, driving to the Work Bench. They get out… only for Sam to trip over it on the ground.
Once they get into the store with Ben, they put the box on a truck to Delaware to get rid of it. The power briefly goes out and Sam catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror, electrified. The lights come back up and he’s okay. As they clock in, Sam finds out that Andi is going to be working the night shift with him. Later as Sam and Sock unload goods, the Devil appears and tells Sam to open the box. Unfortunately they unload on a customer and the boss makes them work the night shift doing inventory.
Sam and Sock head to Sam’s place where Sam insists that Sock doesn’t mention anything to his mother, who he lied to about the fact he’s still in debt to the Devil. They go in and the box is waiting for them. Sock tries to say it’s his and he quickly gets out before he has to lie. Sam tries to get rid of it by taking it outside but the Devil teleports him up to a broadcast station and tells him to open the box. The Devil then explains that the recent blackouts and Sam’s newfound electrical abilities are related, and he should get on the job before more innocents die.
The next morning Sam opens the box and finds… a remote controlled monster truck toy. Mr. Oliver gives him a new car as a belated birthday gift and admits he’s trying to buy him off. Sam suggests they tell their truth but Mr. Oliver isn’t big on the idea. They go to the store and try to figure out how to use the new vessel, while another blackout hits, indicating another death. That night, Sam and Sock run the inventory with Ted then deliver some backup generators to a hospital which is suffering during the blackout. They notice a section of wall has been knocked off and when Sam touches it, he gets massively shocked. After stopping at a bar to recover, Sam heads back to the store but spots more lightning and follows it to a nearby college where he finds a man killed in his car by lightning. Looking up at the nearby roof, he briefly sees the escaped soul atop a business college.
The next morning, the Devil drops in and Sam has figured out that it’s Arthur Ferrey. The Devil neither confirms nor denies but points out that the escaped souls don’t necessarily act logically. The Devil then notes that lying never solves anything and disappears as Sam’s mother comes in. An awkward conversation ensues but Sam still doesn’t tell the truth.
At the Work Bench, Ted is giving Andi a hard time and she tries to get him angry, but he refuses to put her on night shift with Sam. Josie comes in and Sam asks her about Arthur Ferrey, who was selling electricity to other states and died before trial. Sam figures that Ferrey is going after the buildings he dedicated money to, that they’re now taking his names off of. They overhear a radio broadcast about a dam and figure Ferrey is there, and the three of them go out there after putting on scuba gear.
At the dam, Ferrey is fueling up to take out the entire dam. They drive the remote car over to him… where it promptly gets run over by a passing car. Sam grabs the parts but Ferrey spots him and Sam tries to bluff him. They all confront Ferry and he flashes away in a bolt of lightning.
Back at the store, they try to reassemble the toy truck when the Devil appears and congratulates Sam on a good job. He also warns that now Ferrey knows who he is and will be coming after him. They run outside when Ferrey brings a hybrid car and sends it after them. They manage to get into the store just in time, but Ferrey comes in and starts taking over all the electrical applicants, including a lawn mower and nail gun. Ben takes a wound in the leg and when they help him, Sam realizes the controller is the key and goes out to confront Ferrey directly. The soul appears and refuses to back down, so Sam extends the antenna on the controller and uses it as a lightning rod to suck in Ferrey, capturing him.
The next day they drop off the vessel at the DMV where Gladys the Demon takes it off of them. Getting back home, Sam’s brother Kyle rubs it in that the car was damaged. Sam comes clean and admits the truth to his mother, and they both agree not to tell Kyle.
Ted berates Sam for wrecking the store and plans to teach him by putting him on garbage duty. Picking up the lot, Sam runs into the Devil who has managed to get him transferred to the garden center… shoveling manure. Sam is less then appreciative until he finds out Andi has been banished there as well by Ted. They have a brief moment together while outside, the Devil smiles, enjoys a flower… and causes a car wreck.
