Sam, Sock, and Ben are trying to assemble an office chair without much luck when they spot Gladys the DMV demon coming into the Work Bench. Sock is intrigued at what demons do in “real life” and starts following her around the store. He even gets into her checkout lane and flirts with her. She shuts him down and leaves, and Sock takes her purchases out and puts them in the trunk. He notices a large human-shaped bundle in the back and tries to stop her by getting in front of her car. That doesn’t work well and she ends up knocking him around a bit.
Ted is handing out the Employee of the Month award, but Sam’s busy trying to find out what Andi wants to do for her birthday. She just wants to have a quiet little get-together with Sam and the others. Sam ends up getting the Dog of the Month award for worst performance (disappointing long-time winner Sock) and is sent out to scrape gum out of the dumpster. As he does he notices a tattoo of a cardinal appearing on his arm. He ends up teleported into a fancy restaurant where the Devil offers him an expensive meal and wristwatch as his Employee of the Month. The Devil even gives Sam an actual case file on his new case, escaped soul Curtis Dean Mays. The Devil notes the soul is back for revenge and teleport away... and Sam gets stuck with the bill.
Back at the Work Bench, Sock and Ben check on Gladys’ purchases in the computer and determine among other things she’s been buying rat poison and rope.
Sam gets back to the Work Bench where Sock and Ben are researching Gladys’ purchases of twine and rat poison. They go over Mays’ file and go to the courthouse to check out the people involved in his trail. They go through the metal detector and Sam shows the guys the necklace he’s bought Andi for her birthday. They warn him that it’s a wife gift, not a friend gift, and tell him to get her something else. After they go through, a new tattoo of a 6 appears on Sam’s arm. Mays comes through the metal detector but on the other side he removes a tattoo of a piece of barbed wide... and it becomes the real thing.
The guys talk to Josie’s boss Evan, pretending to be writers. Josie comes in and wonders what’s up, and Sock tries to cover (badly) with his ex-girlfriend. Evan reveals that Mays’ attorney was shot two days ago. There’s a scream, and they go to find that the judge in charge of Mays’ case is dead, strangled with barbed wire. They figure that Mays will go after his prosecutor next and Sam wants to stake out his house, but Sock and Ben say they have other stuff to do: watch Gladys. As they head out to the car they find the box with the new vessel: a taser.
At the Work Bench, Sam finds Andi with her “boyfriend” Greg. Greg asks Sam to help him plan a big surprise party and ignores Sam’s advice that Andi doesn’t like big parties. As Greg leaves, another tattoo of a 1 appears on Sam’s arm.
That night, Sock and Ben are drinking key lime martinis and watching Gladys when some kids come by to egg her suburban home. She chases them off, threatening to put them in her stew, and Sock figures something is up. Meanwhile, Sam is watching the prosecutor’s house and spots someone sneaking around the back. Sam shoots the guy with the taser and he’s stunned, but not captured. He checks the guy’s ID and finds out he’s a cop. Sam tries to bluff his way out but the cop, Dan Stafford, plans to arrest him... until he spots the gift watch. Stafford takes the watch and tells Sam to leave.
Sam goes to bar where Andi’s out with Josie, and Andi wants to know what Greg has planned. Sam lies (badly) then gets away to meet with Sock and Ben. Andi’s figured Greg has a big party planned and protests when Josie points out that Greg’s her boyfriend. Andi would prefer someone who knows everything about her, and Josie suggests that she get together with Sam. Andi objects, saying she doesn’t want to ruin her friendship with Sam by getting romantically involved.
The next day, Ben and Sock sneak into Gladys’ house but don’t find any bodies. They do find a lot of angel figurines and other decorations, and the house looks normal. Gladys comes back and comes after them with a shovel. She chases them back to Ben’s car and starts pounding away, as all of her neighbors look on. Gladys complains that the guys were hounding her, but nobody tries to support her.
Sam is at the Work Bench when the Devil teleports him to a baseball stadium. Sam wants to know about the watch and the Devil cheerfully explains that the watch belongs to the dead defense attorney, and Stafford will find Sam on the courthouse surveillance tapes and connect him to the dead judge. The Devil even offers Sam the chance to hit him a few times with a baseball bat but it doesn’t hurt him. Sam then finds himself back at the Work Bench, where he discovers that the police have searched his locker and want him to come in for questioning.
Sock has been checking out the Bible and notes that Gladys is a fallen angel, and might not be totally evil. He even sympathizes with her, confessing to Ben that he was big as a child and even his parents teased him. Sam comes in to get Sock to help him at the police station, but they’re interrupted when Greg wants to talk to Sam. Greg is mad that Andi knows about the surprise party and he figures Sam told her. Sam tells him the party was a stupid idea and Greg starts a slap fight. Sock has to break them up but not before Sam bloodies Greg’s notes and gets it on his hands. At the police station, Sock tries to pass himself off as a lawyer (badly). Stafford chases him off, notices the blood on Sam’s hand, and starts interrogating him. Sam cracks and starts yelling for the Devil but doesn’t get a response. Stafford shoves him up the wall and notices that a fourth tattoo has appeared: a 3. Stafford says his address is 613 Cardinal and wants to know what’s going on. Sam figures out that Stafford is the next victim and convinces him they should go to the detective’s house.
Sock is in his bedroom studying a picture of an angel. He goes to Gladys’ house, apologizes, and she invites him in for tea and cake. She admits she can be irritating but likes having the guys come into the DMV. She then sits down next to Sock and they start kissing, then ripping off their clothing... and Sock wakes up from his nightmare.
At Stafford’s house, Sam looks around and sees all of the detective’s awards and honors, and Stafford admits he’s lost his reputation. Sam tries to convince him that Mays is coming but Stafford still believes the killer is a copycat. Finally he agrees to let Sam get the taser out of his car, but Mays attacks them, pulling off fireball tattoos and throwing them. Stafford is sent flying and Sam distracts Mays with a shotgun, then uses the weapon to blast open the glove compartment, get the taser, and capture Hays.
Sam gets the injured Stafford back into the house but the cop reveals that he knows all about the Devil. Stafford says he needs one more solved case to get back his reputation, but he’ll need to frame Sam since Mays is gone. However, when he tries to shoot Sam the gun jams. Then Stafford is compelled to take the gun and shoot himself. The Devil appears, plants the watch on the corpse, and cheerfully admits he’s faked Stafford’s suicide/confession note admitting to the murders. He reveals that Stafford sold his soul in return for solving five reputation-making cases. This case was the last, and the Devil kept his word: Stafford will get a big reputation by revealing who the killer was.
The next day at the Work Bench, Andi tells Sam that she broke up with Greg because they were just too different. Sam gives her the necklace for her birthday but she thinks it’s a wife gift too and runs off. The guys go to the DMV to drop off the taser and Gladys is waiting for them. When Sock looks nervous, she just smiles and asks him if he’s had any recent dreams. Sock runs off in terror and Gladys gives Sam a small box: another present from the Devil. The guys take it to the bar and study it, and finally Sam opens it. It’s a “Get Out of Hell Free” card. Sam refuses to take it, figuring it’s yet another of the Devil’s trick. The guys walk away... then Sam comes back and picks it up, just in case.
