Sam is playing a first-person shooter with Sock and Ben, but bows out early claiming he has to help his mother at home. Actually he’s sneaking off to see Cady, who his friends don’t trust because her mother was dating the Devil. However, they soon track Sam down to the bar where he and Cady are having a drink and preparing to bury her goldfish. Sam isn’t thrilled at the company and takes Cady to the dance floor, but Ben and Sock end up slow dancing together as well to keep watching him.
The next day, Ben and Sock are restocking when Andi comes up and asks them about Cady. They initially hedge on telling her their suspicions, but even when they do Andi thinks they’re just kidding round. Meanwhile, Sam is at home getting ready for work when Cady calls him and starts talking about how she just got out of the shower and is walking around naked. However, when she starts taking about ripping the heads off of chickens, Sam realizes it’s the Devil in the room, making a prank call. The Devil isn’t impressed with Sam’s new girlfriend and gives Sam his new case. Two bank robbers, Thaddeus Johnson and Paul Huang, robbed a bank 14 years ago and got away, but argued over the money and killed each other. Thaddeus escaped from Hell, found the stolen money, and used it to buy a manor. The Devil even gives Sam the address, telling him it’ll be an easy case. He leaves and Sam finds the vessel box waiting for him.
Sam, Sock, and Ben go to Johnson’s house and get in claiming to be radon inspectors. Sam has trouble with the new vessel, a cigarette lighter, and Johnson walks through a wall, leaving the metal on him behind. The guys chase him through the house and finally corner him, so Johnson offers them a share of the stolen loot. It’s just a ruse and he goes for his gun, but Sam sucks him into the lighter. The next day he goes to the DMV but Gladys refuses to take it, saying it’s been rejected. Sam goes back to his house where they have the stolen money, and Sock and Ben say they should get a share. Ben refuses and they get mad.
Still stuck with the vessel, Sam goes out with Cady and brings up the subject of her father. She thinks he might have been a musician for Huey Lewis and the News, but doesn’t know for sure Sam diverts her attention by suggesting they buy a new goldfish. She points out one in the window and goes inside to buy it… and it dies.
The next morning, the Devil shows up at the store and explains that Sam can’t return the lighter because it’s only half full. The Devil “forgot” to mention that Huang also escapes from Hell and Sam has to capture them both, and that Huang is the dangerous one. The Devil also suggests Sam spend the money, because it was covered by insurance and it was a victimless crime. Sam goes to get his friends and notices that Ben is wearing an expensive tracksuit. It turns out they took some of the money but they promise not to spend any more and Ben leaves to do some research. Sock then mentions that he spent some other money: to replace all of stuff Josie lost in a fire just before she broke up with Sock (and which he accidentally set). Sam reluctantly agrees to let him keep the stuff since it’s for a good cause but says that’s it.
Ben finds out that there was a third bank robber, Rick Forester, but he was arrested and released four years ago. He’s now on parole and works in a doughnut store so the guys visit him and find out the police have picked up Forester for questioning. While they wait for him to be released, Sock figures that if Cady were the daughter of the Devil she’d have a 666 mark on her body. He invites everyone to his hot tub and tries to check her out by braiding her hair. When that gets weird, Sam goes inside and she offers to do whatever she can to prove she’s okay. She even agrees to let them check her out naked… if she can do the same with them. A few minutes later, Sock and Ben come in to tell Sam that she checks out, and Sam heads back to the tub.
The next day the guys talk to Forester and he explains that Huang and Johnson set him up with gambling debts at a Chinatown poker den then forced him to let them into the bank to rob it. They shot each other and he got caught holding the bag. Since Ted is an ex-gambling addict, Sam and Ben ask him to get them into a high-stakes game using some of the stolen money for a buy-in. Meanwhile, Sock drops off all the stuff at Josie and she’s touched by his gesture, but wants to know how he could afford everything. He can’t explain and she goes inside.
Josie and Andi get together at the bar and trade experiences, wondering why the guys are doing all the weird stuff they’re into. Meanwhile, Ted takes the guys to Chinatown but he gets kicked out after someone he owes money to breaks his fingers and takes his cash. The guys spot Huang and join him in a game of poker. Huang takes a break and the guys follow him, but Huang comes through a wall and grabs Ben, and threatens to kill him unless they give him the vessel. Once they do that, Huang gives them 45 minutes to bring him the rest of the bank money, or he’ll solidify Ben’s head in a wall.
Sam and Sock come back with minutes to spare but Sam refuses to give up the money, saying it’s cursed. He sets it on fire and tosses it into the next room. Huang phases through the wall to get it… leaving the metal cigarette lighter/vessel behind. Sam grabs it while Huang discovers the bag of money just had Sock’s underpants. Sam sucks Huang into the lighter and they head to the bar with the cash. Sam figures the cash is cursed and the Devil wanted them to argue over it, so they secretly donate it to Forester so he can start a new life.
Back at the bar, Sam comes in for a date with Cady but the Devil is waiting for him. The Devil thinks Sam is a wuss and Forester will end up homeless after he spends it all, but Sam thinks she did the right thing. Cady comes in and recognizes the Devil as her mother’s boyfriend “Jerry.” He just smiles and leaves, and Cady admits she’s wondered if he might be her father. Sam assures her that she’s nothing like Jerry. However, as they embrace, he notices the nearby flowers in a vase dying before his eyes.
